One thing I’ll ask for this coming year- The pavement for the untouched section up to S. Quincy St has degraded a bit. Time for some repair, and perhaps white edge lines to make it easier to navigate at night? (This section did not get lighting)

I wonder if anyone’s approached him about a gofundme/kickstarter/indigogo fundraiser for a farewell tour?

If his health will let him, bonne idee!

If the frame, the core of the bike, is manufactured in Wisconsin, then we can call it “American made”. Statement made.

Take a trip back in time to 1981, when my Trek 412 was manufactured in Waterloo, WI. Lugged/sliver brazed construction, using tubing from Ishiwata and rear dropouts from Suntour, both from Japan. OE components a mix from Europe and Japan. Then, as now, there were relatively few American-manufactured components and parts, except maybe at the high end. No one has challenged its “made in America” credentials.

And Specialized established itself with tires made for them in Asia. Find me an “American made” tire, not simply an American brand, that can beat the Schwalbe Marathons for this intended purpose.

I think it is admirable what Shinola is trying to do- to “rebirth” an famed industrial city that everyone else has abandoned and left for dead. Not to mention the human beings- the craftsmen & craftswomen who were also abandoned in the search for lower labor costs. If Shinola’s watches and bikes can compete successfully at their price points on their own merit, then that is wonderful. I will “buy American” IF the product stands up on its own merits- building crap and wrapping it in the flag… disrespects the flag.

Next time you’re in the Pentagon Metro Stration, aim a flashlight into the tunnel at the south end, either level. No turnout (switch) on the track, but there is a space in the tunnel for a switch and the beginnings of another tunnel. Metro planned for a possible new route at that point when the station was built. Several decades on, we wait…

A new Metro line will require much money and the political *will* to make it happen. Both are in short supply right now.

On Columbia Pike, we are commited and locked into the existing road width. *All* of the new mixed use highrises, end to end, are built right up to the sidewalk. The only thing being razed are old one story storefronts. Morris Van’s place will be replaced evenually.

In the meantime, we have to protect our cycling interests in a new political climate.

How much was Fairfax County going to contribute to the cost for building and running the street car?

Fairfax County was going to contribute I think 20% for their part of the route. This *was* a joint effort over many years, and their transit plans for Baileys Crossroads and Skyline got flushed down the drain with Arlington’s decision. Bridges burned.

As I don’t live in Arlington and was only tangentially aware of a streetcar proposal at all, can someone explain what this has to do with bicycles?

We who are cycling advocates will have to deal with the same elected officials, who from this point forward, as a whole, might require more convincing that *our* desires aren’t frivolous.

And for the objectives we want, we have to have good relations with our neighbors in the region. The way this decision went down did *nothing* for that.

Sorry you had an “eventful” ride!

Other than the rain, I know of no other reason drivers were taking their *stupid* pills.

The undergrounding of utilities still has not been completed. The phone poles on the south side of the Pike are still up, “protected” by sand barrels. But that’s the south side.

Fascinating. I think it is, as an “other” — there are 2 white ones marked on the Donaldson Run Trail – across the stream from the one at the very north end of Upshur St. I only noticed one along the trail…

Btw, on the map, the hydrants are color-coded based on flow rate- GPM @ 20 psi.

Tried, but work wouldn’t let me, sorry… Were you able to reach & teach many ninjas?

How many were W&OD commuters and how many were local Columbia Pike travelers?

“…that bikes not be locked up to trees, other bikes, or members of the E Street Band.”

Um, yeah. You don’t want Steven Van Zandt to channel his inner Silvio Dante.
