I saw someone driving through one of those two way turn lanes, honking, to pass a line of cars. I assume they were important.
*They* certainly thought they were important…

ParticipantP.S. Someone needs to do a *better-run* study. “Something for everyone” doesn’t cut it.

Participant“Wearing a pedestrian” is definitely not good for the pedestrian…
On helmets, from someone who has battle-tested them a couple of times, and is in his write-enough mind to right about it: *Highly* advisable and recommended, though the only place we can *mandate* it is for our children. A concussion is its own special Twilight Zone- but not a fun place to be. And the damage is *culmulative*. Some HOF NFL players have died, way too young, largely due to that cumulative brain damage. IndyCar driver & Indy 500 winner Dario Franchitti had to retire for that reason. His doctors wanted him to remain a live hero, not a dead one. Lastly, a head injury can risk impairing a child’s entire future life.
No guarantees, just reduced probability of injury. Improving the odds.

Bolt-on, sidepull caliper or whatever (I once found a rather exotic centerpull designed for this application), from a *BMX* supplier, which would guarantee finding a brake with the needed long reach. *Radiused washers* are available for both front and rear applications. A BMX vendor will also have brake levers sized for young hands. Unless the frame is damaged or junk, those mounts will be more than strong enough. I once made long-reach caliper brakes (good ones!) work, safely, on an old cruiser that was never designed with hand brakes in mind.

ParticipantI finally retired my 13-year-old-or-so Bell Ghisallo, for this:

A Giro Savant with MIPS technology. The thinking behind the additional movable lining/cap inside is to reduce rotational forces to the brain during certain impacts. Sounded good to me. And suprisingly, I didn’t have to shell out $200-$300 for a “pro” helmet to get this feature. This is at the $100-$110 price point. That it fits better than the Ghisallo is a bonus.

ParticipantJust found this: http://wtop.com/arlington/2015/04/bridge-work-will-clog-commute-along-washington-boulevard/
How will this affect the sidewalk/”bike path” alongside? Many of us use that path to get to DC via Memorial Bridge, or via Lady Bird Johnson Park & 14th St. Bridge. Close that off and you’ve amputated a bike route.

ParticipantDarn. Need to pick up Sue from work and head over to the PAL Pizza party @ BikeArlington at 6:30pm. Love the idea, but my work schedule won’t let me…

ParticipantNow then… the version we get in the mainstream grocery stores, or the genuine Italian import at The Italian Store?

ParticipantAnother reason for the “left arm upraised”- That rule was written with cars in mind. Unless you’re tooling around here with a British right hand drive car, your right arm isn’t very visible. And on a motorcycle, your right hand controls the throttle. Sorta need it for that.
For the record, when I ride, I prefer the right hand pointing that way.

ParticipantDarn. Sue and I could’ve made Sunday. We are booked Saturday. Have a good one! That you’re ending where The Italian Store is… even better.
P.S. Lobbying opportunity- Bob Tramonte, owner of The Italian Store, is not normally there Saturday evenings, but worth a shot. Ask them if there will be *bike racks* at the soon-to-open Westover location. (I would remind Bob of when Jim Bellas & The Bicycle Exchange were his next door neighbors.)

FYI we saw those cosplay sisters walking north on MVT just above Gravelly Point, probably 630-645p. Darn, I wish I’d recognized which princesses they were. Will have to ask tomorrow if my kids recognized who they were.
They perhaps attended Sakura Matsuri, the street festival that is part of the Cherry Blossom Festival, though *Frozen* is outside the usual (for Sakura Matsuri) Anime and ninja cosplay… oh, but that was Saturday, lol.

Participant“…the BEST way to get to the Tidal Basin to see the cherry blossoms and/or fireworks is by bike. Easy to get in, and easy to get out.”
Worth repeating again and again. Especially this coming week, when the blossoms will peak.
