My gut reaction is that it’s an enforcement issue…despite the garage website stating “The garage is patrolled by Ballston Common Mall security 24 hours a day.”
Enforcement issue? Sounds more like a “Will to enforce” issue, or lack thereof.

The new plans are done and the County will be presenting them to the Penrose Neighborhood Association this Tuesday, March 15th at 7:30pm at Trinity Episcopal Church (corner of Columbia Pike & South Wayne Street, enter on South Wayne under the “School of Early Learning” entrance).
This is THIRD design for this trail. Tree impact has been cut in half. It’s time to move forward and build the damn thing. If you live in the area, especially if you live in Penrose [east of Walter Reed, South of 50, west of Washington Blvd, north of Columbia Pike) PLEASE come to the meeting and express your support.
Chris: We plan on being there. The big question will be… Can this pass the Bernie Berne test?

ParticipantHi. I have not been on the Mt. Vernon Trail, specifically the Reagan National (DCA) section, since they started the road construction and exit ramp removal project. I missed the debut of the mulch cycling surface…lucky me. What’s it like currently?

You forgot “wearing it backwards”. Yes, I *still* see that.

Maybe Dirt should invite her on a gravel grinder ride since that is how she is posed.
Seriously, Secretary of State Kerry is an avid cyclist and so is Justice Stephen Breyer. Hope they are both recovered from their accidents and are riding again.
Vintage Schwinn cruiser. Which will get the Old bike Shop’s attention…

ParticipantPotomacCyclist, thank you. You highlighted the reasons I’ve ridden all the way into National Harbor, beyond the Wilson Bridge, *twice*. That’s it over all the years it’s been open. The last time, a couple of years ago, supposedly bikes were not allowed beyond the crushed shell path, no bike racks at that point, NO SIGNS POSTED. I rode all the way to the Peeps store before a security guard gently (thank you) reminded me of the ban.
I could manage the shells on 700×32 Conti touring tires. Not easy, but doable. *I* had no fear of punctures, but a fast road tire on that surface entails risk of flatting from cuts.
If anyone from National Harbor is reading this, you’re missing a *golden* opportunity to make it easier for Alexandrians and DC’ers to get to your stores, restaurants, hotels, casinos, etc. *$$$* and tax revenue. Do not fear CABI. Join the network.

ParticipantGood morning. A 12th St South Bicycle Boulevard update:
This is looking from South Monroe St toward Glebe Rd. To the left is the nearly complete housing/retail developement on the old Rosenthal Chevrolet site. A sidewalk has been added. One step more bike-friendly, I trust?

Dyno-hubs are uber cool.
I am another one, like Steve O, who happily runs Euro-spec lighting permanently mounted to the bike. Dyno hubs are wonderful, but back when I first purchased this setup in 2011, I had a very tight budget and prioritized the best headlight I could afford. So, 1st generation B+M Cyo IQ headlight (since upgraded to the 2nd gen Cyo IQ Premium) & B+M Topline taillight. I couldn’t swing the cost of either a dynohub + wheel rebuild or one fully built. But there is another option (hear me through before you groan):

“Bottle” generators are not dead. This one from B+M. $49. True, not the perfect solution, it does have drag. But much less than the Union generator I ran in the 80s. I lose a gear running it (I can deal with it), but the light is reliable, no worries about battery run time, and bolted down, *not* a “grab & go” opportunity for a thief. And a number of Euro market commuter bikes have the mounting bracket welded to the frame, so… viable power option if your budget dictates it.
On the matter of glare, *anybody’s* light is going to be an irritation when you are cresting a hill. That’s a problem with auto lighting, too. Only way to avoid that is to aim so low *you* can’t see down the road. Not good for your safety. I simply try to be gracious about it. No points gained being a jerk.

ParticipantMany (but not all) of the front and rear lights on the market, be they domestic vendor or StVZO spec, do offer light output to the sides. Some, quite good.
On reflectors, I became a big fan of reflective sidewalls on bike tires some time ago. Defines the bike quite effectively to other traffic. Standard on CABI bikes. The single most important other reflector for me (and the last one I would consider removing) is the red rear one. Can be US spec or Euro, and integrated with the rear light, if you prefer. And reflective anything on the pedals or your ankles. That said, reflective materials still rely on light output from that oncoming vehicle, and the hope that the driver is looking at something other than his/her smartphone. Like the road, maybe?

I hope they’ll at least keep FMR trail open between Shirlington and Mt. Vernon Avenue. We’ll be majorly screwed if they don’t.
Has anyone published a map of the affected area, so we can look accurately at our alternate route options?

ParticipantTrollheim… OK, does anyone make a tire with a compound that will offer some grip on slimy boardwalk?
