ParticipantDasgeh, forgive the bitterness, but in the letter, Mr. Schwartz has made it clear the next BAC meeting will be HIS committee, HIS chosen leadership, HIS criterion for membership.
I don’t think I want to be a part of that.

ParticipantDear Katie Cristol: Welcome to the leadership of the Arlington County Board. Here is your first headache…

ParticipantFrom Schwartz’s letter: “… eleven members are not representatives of an organization or civic association.” Is being the representative of a local business (Papillon Cycles) *not* adequate? If it is not, then I’m not sure I want to be a part of *his* committee.

ParticipantSorry (NOT sorry)- I’m pissed. Has the existing committee been fired? And does he *have* that authority?
Starduster
ParticipantMay I ask *who* cancelled the meeting?

The guidebooks for this ride have now arrived in Virginia! I sent a box of them each to Steve O and CaseyKane50 for distribution. If you want an electronic PDF version, let me know so I can send one to you.
Yes I would! William_G_Fuchs@msn.com

ParticipantDoes anyone have an update on this mishap, and the rider’s condition?

There are a lot more restaurants than McDonald’s open on Christmas Day. For example, we’re going to Passage to India, in Bethesda, for dinner.
Maneki Neko, Falls Church, will open on Christmas day. Thank Tao-san when you see him…

I’ve been having to pull a U-Turn every morning since I take the lane down to the Pentagon to avoid having to cross 4 ramps across the trail. Plus traffic is light in the morning and it’s easy to coast at the speed limit down the hill.
The sight line is terrible from DC to Arlington. I 100% stop here. I started to rearrange some cones one night to create a neck down, but then I saw a Pentagon cop car and chickened out.
Agree with Dana that a new curb cut at the C in Columbia Pike would be great.
On this stretch, going eastbound from Southgate, I will usually take the lane on the road. It is not that busy with car traffic, and hitting it in the big ring, I can get close to prevailing speed, which feels safer to me. I came across this change 2 months ago, and just went to the end of the median, and made a U-turn of it.
Elsewhere on this trail, the finished ped/bike lane on the bridge over J-D Highway supposedly will open after Christmas. Yay!

I was tempted to buy one of these chainless bikes with internal gear hub, but it’s of bad quality, unknown speed at 60 RPM cadence, and they weigh 36 LBS according to the manufacturer, because the front gearing needs lots of enforcement:

However, I posted it just in case some of you are interested. Google Shopping seems to have better results than Amazon though.
I haven’t seen a *new* shaft drive bike in like, forever! (Larry @ The Old Bike Shop has a 1900-ish one in the window at his shop…)

ParticipantI came by there by car about 9:00am, perhaps a couple of minutes after this happened. Bike propped up off the side, rider on the deck, helmet still on, being tended to, smashed windshield on the SUV. Location of mishap matches the map above, in the crosswalk.
Regardless of what direction the rider was going, even if you have the light and the walk signal, you just HOPE a vehicle on the off ramp sees you…
More detail- the rider appeared to be conscious, and had his head propped up. No rescue response just yet.

ParticipantMegabeth, thank you. And an even bigger thank you for the reminder about road etiquette. That’s important. [Your “preaching to the choir” moment follows. Ha.] No secret that Megabeth is trying to make her fundraising ride as inclusive as possible. So, you get a mix of riders ranging from the road racers working on pacelines or trying to squeeze a Century in before 3, to families carrying their kids on cargo bikes. (And of course, Steve O’s unicycle tradition. That’s right, Steve, you’re officially a “tradition”.) Somewhere in the middle will be my wife, on the Breezer named Snowflake, who simply wants to cruise. The last time she ran the 100, she was intimidated/irritated by the fast groups blowing by. So, a reminder to all- faster traffic stay left, slow traffic keep right, and be mindful and courteous to all- NO POINTS GIVEN for scaring someone off the road. Politeness that I hope carries over the W&OD and Mt Vernon trails.
