There’s been the W&OD mm0 traffic circle forever, hardly anyone follows traffic circle etiquette there.

Oh that one? I always treated it as the trail terminus, largely because of the major intersection just beyond, which dominates the path of travel. Custis @ Bluemont is more like a roadgoing traffic circle. I will ride it soon enough and will report back…

I like the expanded pavement area which will make it easier to negotiate the “S” turn. I’m not sure I see the benefit of the raised curb circle in the middle of it.

We have a traffic circle on a bike path.
We have a traffic circle on a bike path!
Is this new design practice?

Labor Day Pancakes
Let’s meet for Monday Pancakes at Mike’s. I’m told they have outdoor seating. Not sure what time they open, but I’ll shoot for 830ish. Come whenever you like.

Lazy Mike’s in Falls Church, oui?
I intend to be there. Merci.

ParticipantFor those who wish to visit this impromptu shrine and are new to Lake Accotink Park: https://www.fairfaxcounty.gov/parks/lake-accotink
I parked by the dam at the east end and rode. Advisory- the trail is largely gravel. I quickly realized I had to drop my road tire pressures. Drastically. Two steps later, “Hey! That’s much better!” and I was able to tackle the most technical terrain I had ever attempted on my 412. My first time ever on this trail. Pete would approve.
Alternately, you can access the site by neighborhood roads (Danbury Forest Road, off of Braddock Rd., or from Rolling Road).

ParticipantNot everyone in the neighborhood knows that someone died there. I encountered a few locals for whom I was the bearer of that news. And midway through my stay, a roadie in the full green Kelly race kit came powering through out-of-saddle. Life goes on…

“Pete is with us, man!” I have a mystery as well- my cover photo on FB changed, and I have no idea how I did that! Pete???

ParticipantI will confess feeling a state of anxiety traveling to this place.
I felt much more at peace afterwards, and could enjoy dancing with the Trek on gravel finishing the loop.

ParticipantA journey, to the western edge of Lake Accotink Trail:
This is a connector to the trail where Danbury Forest Road ends. Steeply graded- evasive action in either direction would not have been easy. Someone had already been there (Bikenetic?) and left flowers. I left my own modest memorial.

A year ago, Pete did a Bikenetic ride down to 12th & Florida NE, to the place where Dave Salovesh died. The day before, the first attempt at a ghost bike was installed (for date reference, #Bobco85 was back in town and rode with #Steve O the night before). Pete’s enormous humanity showed, the whole way. (Photo by #Boomer2U)
Now I have my own journey to make to Lake Accotink, to sit at that place and find some sort of closure. Probably midday…
You are loved…

ParticipantRode it today. A *much* more comfortable experience. Though there is one “clean-up” detail- long exposed bolts where Armco bridges sections of the wall on the other side. Can we trim those back?
