Niels Bohr was one of the foremost scientists of modern physics, best known for his substantial contributions to quantum theory and his Nobel Prize-winning research on the structure of atoms.Sophie CWParticipant#STEM – The International Latitude Observatory was built in 1899 to measure the earth’s wobble on its polar axis. Along with 5 other cities around the globe, Gaithersburg used a large Zenith telescope to aid in the research of polar motion, the size, shape and physical properties of the earth, climate and earthquake predictions, and the navigational patterns of orbiting satellites. Although not longer functioning, the Observatory became a National Historic Landmark in 1989.
