I don’t stop for shit. I had two youths on bikes ask me for an air pump the other week near the MBT. First thing that flashes through my mind is me off my bike which would give these two kids the perfect opportunity to steal my bike (and attached trunk bag). Sorry kids, maybe you should invest in your own pump.

Yea, I personally do not buy a forecast until I see it in person. Weather forecasters are notoriously wrong, but it looks like for something like this, it is hard to miss. I really need to get a rain jacket :p

They put down the bike lane symbols and it looked like they were done by Union Station, but then painted over them in the green lane paint, then put the symbols back down.

I’m hoping the green paint isn’t slippery when wet.

ughh, bike lane is still not open and today i spotted large steal plates in the bike lane where that automated gate is at between M an L. Unknown if they are just sitting there or if they had to open up the street below.

I was half thinking today that maybe they will open the lanes on BTWD. Here’s hoping!

I bet if a revenue generating speed camera was broken, it would be fixed THAT day.

    man, F me!

Got a flat (rear tire) on the MBT yesterday evening from some staples. Changed my flat, and had a good ride to Beltsville/Silver Spring. This morning, I went and topped off my tire with air and thought, “Maybe I should top off the front tire, too…..Naaa, I just topped it off yesterday.”

Ughh. My drive way is short and steep and the street is narror, so you have to start your turn while you are still on the driveway. I noticed that “thud” as soon as a started turning. Lost control of the bike and laid her down. My knee is nice and scrapped up. Changed the tire and continued in. I had no more spare tubes, so I really rolled the dice riding in. Maybe I will check out that bicyclespace shop on my way home, but what’s the best way to get from there to the MBT?

There is one of these at the College Park Metro. In front of the fancy “bike and ride” storage area.

I really wish the stands had a spoke tensionometer on them :( Those things are like $60 and it would be nice to have right now.

I think FPS is the police that deals with the sheer amount of federal property in the area.

Also, there was an incident at the White House yesterday, so the activity in the afternoon may have been them responding to that. I have noticed that any type of incident that is even remotely above “routine” requires every law enforcement agency in DC to send every single spare unit they have.

I’ve done that a few times, but I hate using the sidewalk, so if I know it will be obstructed, I just take North Capital – I got in the habit when the original construction started and they killed the old bike lanes and made the street one way.

Does anyone know what the final plan is for the stretch from G St. up to the bike / pedestrian crossing in front of union St. (at Mass Ave)? I feel like the bike lanes just end on the wrong side of the street, leaving us to fend for ourselves. Admittedly, there’s little traffic there, but still…

That little stretch should technically be a one way street. I think the only possible way a car could even get in a position to go “down” it is if they made a U-turn from the Union Station garage ramp.

Keep an eye out on that little service tunnel that goes into union station. One of the closest calls I have ever had involved one of those golf carts that transport disabled/fat passengers. The dude came peeling out of the tunnel and I came damn close to T-Boning him.

Okay – it’s been over a week since the last post in this thread, and though I risk raising the undead, I am jumping in: WHEN WILL IT BE OPEN FOR REAL?

Every day it looks so close. I’ve even ridden the entire length from Union to M St. because there were no obstructions except barrels, but since then there’s been seemingly endless painting and other work. Even the seemingly complete section from Union to the part where the curb barrier starts has been partially obstructed every time I’ve ridden (yellow police tape this morning). I keep hoping because I don’t like riding on North Capitol, but going on the other side of Union Station is a pain (because old habits die hard).

Well, part of the hold up is that they are installing those fancy brick pavers on the crosswalks. They were doing that last week and it looks mostly done. They are also painting the the bike lane from K to M green, which is also coming along quickly. I have no training in construction or civil engineering, but I dont see why it wouldn’t be done in two weeks. With that said, probably a month! (Hopefully I am being sarcastic).

I don’t mess around with North Capital. I just jump on the sidewalk from K to M.

Those people messing around right there should GTFO of that water. There are a few deep cofferdams in that area that are full of water due to the flooding. I am also fairly sure that they lowered the rebar forms for the pilings down too. So, basically, you have a deep ass pit with a steel rebar jungle gym in it. That is a serious recipe for disaster if somone were to walk into the cofferdam.

Snapped this today. This is why i would never play around at that construction site. Imagine falling into this pit if it was flooded. Good chance of a rebar enema, too!

I gotta give credit to the people who maintain the NE Branch trail in PG. I am guessing it is MNCPPC or PG Parks, but whoever, they do a good job. The “Beach” at the end of the College Park Airport was cleaned up on Friday, as were a bunch of other sandy areas where the river crested.

I took my daughter fishing at Lake Artmesia yesterday. Several areas are still flooded. If you are going from the CSX/WMATA underpass, you are going to have to go around the nothern side of the lake, as the path on the southern shore is still flooded. I did see a guy on a road bike ride through it though, so it’s not that deep I suppose.

Looks like they are going to paint that lane green. Hopefully it helps with these morons trying to drive in it.

The NE Branch trail section south of Decatur was flooded yesterday. It was probably still flooded this morning but I took the (unmarked) detour up Decatur (bike lane) to Alt Route 1 (wide lane) and then rejoined the trail system on Armentrout Road sidepath.

The NE Branch got so high that it flooded over the trail not only in that area, but also on the East-West highway underpass (per drevil’s pic above), and by College Park airport runway. There was 8 inches deep of mud and sand by the airport — you have a dismount to cross with narrow tires. The NW branch flooded by 38th street, but no deep mud or debris.

MNCPP crews were out on the trails this morning, so hopefully will be all cleaned up by this afternoon’s commute. They usually do a nice job. -Jeff

I am pretty sure that section south was still flooded. The river was so high that I even if there was no construction there, I think it would have flooded out.

Ah, I cannot wait to deal with the “Sand Pit” that is just south of the construction.

The East-West Hwy underpass is no longer flooded but there is a thick layer of sediment there, so take it easy! The railroad underpass a bit further south was still flooded as of this morning. I didn’t even bother getting close, as I could see it from Decatur St.
