ParticipantThe cluster f section was a real treat this morning….

ParticipantI have only been riding the MBT for like a year, so I don’t have much cred, but I generally feel “pretty safe.”
The worse time is when you are hitting the MBT when a school has just gotten out. The youth usually travel in groups, and when they are in groups, they get more ballsy. I have heard of the “knock out” game and there have been a few times when I thought someone was going to try to play, but luckily, they didn’t. The shitty thing is the group will be walking across the entire width of the trail, so you are forced to get within swinging range.
I don’t know how summer impacts the number of bored youth wandering the trail. On one hand, they are not in school and therefore not “commuting” but on the other hand, they might just be out and about, bored, and looking for something to get into.

ParticipantSince finding this gem, it has basically replaced the NE branch trail for me. No sand pits, no gravel, and no mud pits!

ParticipantVery nice trail. Can’t believe I missed it
It will be pretty sweet when the College Park-Riverdale path gets developed. Maybe during the next dry day I will ride that and see what is going on.
Yea, you are right, the Rhode Island part is not too bad. When looking on the map, I was like, “Man, you are on RI Ave for a while” but in reality, I was only on it for a minute.

ParticipantMan, Huffy Bikes. I had a few when I was a kid. It def was NOT cool to be riding a Huffy, as they were considered “lame.” I think the lameness came from the fact they were sold at Toys-R-Us and were cheap. The cool bikes growing up were Treks. If you had a Trek, you were a cool kid.
I wonder if kids still see bikes these days as status symbols? I think I know the answer to that….

ParticipantAwesome info! Thanks! She did have a Proteus decal on her rear fender. I am certainly going to check this route out tomorrow. How is riding on RI Ave? Looks like a slim shoulder there. On the return route, do you usually ride north on RI Ave?
Thanks again!

ParticipantYea that loading zone is a cluster F. Even if they extended the cycle track all the way up to Mass Ave, there is a crap ton of pedestrians right there who would be cutting across.

On Friday morning’s BTWD commute, I tried to pass through there (coming from the lake side), and my wheels were completely underwater within 3 seconds
Yesterday, there was a little mud in the tunnel and around it, but it was rideable.
Was the gate locked though? The gate was chained and had a padlock on Saturday morning.

ParticipantAnyone got any intel on the Lake Artemesia/WMATA/CSX underpass?
On Saturday, the Lake Artemesia gate was chained up and locked, and the underpass was a muddy mess. I am assuming that gate was locked due to the mess.

ParticipantSomeone was giving out free stuff at the MBT pit stop. No food or anything, but just free stuff and T-Shirts.

I didn’t get an e-mail. But the only evidence of the Bethesda pit stop is one sign on the ground.
That is pretty dismal.
I threw in the towel and drove to College Park Metro. As I was “waiting for it to clear up” before I committed to driving, I could hear multiple firetrucks/ambulances/police sirens off in the distance and told myself BTWD is not worth dying over.
I commute via bike on most days, so i won’t lose any sleep over it. I will be back at it on Monday.

It is really nasty out there right now. I can’t ride in this. I’m going to wait it out a bit and see what happens.
i got up at like 4 something and it wasn’t raining really. Showered, got bike clothes on, came downstairs, and its pourings. I have a little weather station outside and the windbird is just spinning. If I had a five mile ride, maybe, but 20…I dunno. Going to wait until like 6:15 and see it it lets up a bit before I throw the towel in.

ParticipantI am probably going to wait to see what the weather actually is tomorrow morning, but if it is raining cats and dogs, I don’t know. 20 miles is a long way…
I dont know why WABA does not have a rain date…..I get the gung ho attitude of “rain or shine,” but if we get the rain they are saying we are going to get, there will hardly be anyone showing up.

All seriousness aside, this much rain on Friday morning will probably create another weekly flood on the NE Branch trail low point by the rail bridge.
and the Metro tracks at Lake Artemsia…
and Lake Artemesia (wait, it is actually still flooded as of this afternoon)…
and under the East West Highway….
and maybe at the end of the College Park airpark…
