I saw them this morning, since it was one of the rare times I took the Geroge Mason Memorial Bridge into work. The cop wasn’t there, though — he was sitting in his car in the tunnel under the Humpback Bridge.

    On the bikepath?

They’re back with a vengeance. Right in the crosswalk. This morning there was even an officer parked in his car right next to them, so I couldn’t even kick one out of the way as I rode by.

I rode a CaBi for the first time on Friday, in the rain to go to the bike shop in Georgetown. It was easy to ride, but I’m convinced the saddles are designed just to remind you of the 30-minute free time limit. Like sitting on three large rocks.

Sure, and Arlington can adopt its new motto: ideas so good they have to be mandatory.

You know you live in a bubble when you can seriously suggest that people who can’t afford cars should be required to carry $200 cameras.

Either of those two is going to work find for your intended ride. Based on tire size, the Fuji might be a bit better on pavement and the Scott a bit better on trails with gravel sections.

I second what Mark said. Get the one you like better on a gut level, not analyzing the minor differences between those two component groups. Or buy from whichever store you feel better about.

Know of any ways to get to the Wilson Bridge from there that don’t entail military ID/bases?

I’m still perusing Cycle EXIF. An entire week wasted. Well, not really “wasted” so much as enjoyed.

PS – STEEL IS REAL! ;)

Though aluminum is real too. Ever been hit in the head with a beer can? Real.

This seems to be a dubious claim at best. The 2.0 has a Tiagra RD, which is a decent road component. The 3.0 has an Acera RD, which is a “recreational” component. Maybe I’m wrong, but it seems the 2.0 has the better component here. FD and crank seem to be roughly the same and on a hybrid (or even most road bikes, for that matter), it will hardly make a difference. Interestingly, bikepedia shows the 2.0 as being a full pound lighter than the 3.0. So yeah, unless you seriously like the way the 3.0 rides, the 2.0 seems to be the better value.

Wait, are you saying it is worth the $200 price difference, or that the shop guy’s claim is dubious? One pound weight difference, comparable crank, but a better RD doesn’t seem worth it to me for entry-level. You’d more than make up for the weight difference by leaving your u-lock on the rack at work.

Never mind: just saw your later response. Carry on.

I agree with vvill on the look of the Charge Tap. That’s a nice looking bike, and much different than the others. But it’s also quite a bit more than the Fuji 3.0 and the Diamondback.

On the two Fujis, others here with more experience will correct me if I’m wrong, but it doesn’t seem like the component difference between the 2.0 and the 3.0 is enough to justify the $200 difference for someone looking for a more entry-level bike. It seems the money is mostly going for the carbon fork. But I’ve never ridden a carbon fork, so can’t comment on how much better they are than the 3.0’s aluminum/steel fork. The cranks, brakes, and gears seem similar enough between the two that I’m not sure you’d notice the differences for some time. I’m sure I wouldn’t.

Well, I once again didn’t get up early enough to make it to Friday Coffee Club but I was back on the bike today! Rawr!

Great ride in. Got my new bike computer on so I could keep an eye on my cadence and not push too hard for my knees. Had fun with that :)

Trail seemed awfully empty, am I going to get killed by a thunderstorm on the way home?

Didn’t get my fenders on yet, so now I’ve got nice mud splotches all over the back of my shiny new jersey :( Oh well. Forgot to put tape on my seatbag and snagged the new bike shorts too. :D

New helmet felt nice and airy! (Do not be alarmed. My head does not resemble a toadstool today.)

No fair going incognito in a new helmet, but I may have passed you — in a wretched car. Had to drive in today. It was as bad as I remembered even though there wasn’t any traffic.

Not sure what this means for us… probably nothing good. I note that the one cyclist is the video did not run over the critter

FWIW this study really makes me sad- who the heck deliberately runs over a turtle??!

It’s interesting to see how the other localities did…I mean, LA County, which has 10 million people, couldn’t get over the bar in 30 days, but DC, with 5 million (generously including a lot of the ‘burbs) did it in just over two weeks. Honestly, I think that says more about WABA/BikeArlington/FABB and our other advocacy groups than anything. They really do a fantastic job!

Be nice to L.A. They were busy making movies and (smugly) buying the latest high-end electric cars.

All I need is a LOT more momentum.

Fun day on the bike. Riverbend is not a happy place right now. Fairfax doesn’t have the staffing to really deal with all the downed trees from the big storm. They’re working on it as well as they can, but there are still many, many dozens of big trees down across the trail. I haven’t ridden Riverbend in a year and what’s worse is that it seems like no-one else has either. The more common loop through the park was completely overgrown. Had I not been one of the folks that built the trail, I would not have known where it was. This is no-one’s fault but my own. I have been off the mountain bike so much that I haven’t been riding these trails. No-one else really took up the torch either. I will search for and hopefully cut out a good loop through there when I get back from vacation. That will give the park folks a bit more time to clear stuff out.

Just strap a chainsaw to a rack and have at it on your next ride.
