ParticipantOld Columbia’s no good — it’s a single lane in each direction with a hill, bad sight lines in parts, and fast moving traffic for much of it. There is a side path for some parts. I did Old Columbia to Elmcrest to Braddock and then some side streets over to Dora Kelly on a Sunday morning, but I didn’t think Old Columbia was easy enough riding to justify the extra time. I think I would just ride the sidewalk and access roads on the south side of LRT from Old Columbia to Lincolnia and then go up to Morgan.

Since yesterday’s covet was flaming skull & cross-bones related, today I’ll go for something a little softer:
Coming out next Feb/March from PDW, is the Swallow shaped bottle cage: http://bikeportland.org/2012/09/26/with-new-products-portland-design-works-is-hitting-their-stride-77958
PDW is definitely on a roll lately with some really good looking gear slated to come out over the next few months. The all-metal fenders look gooooooooood.

I was thinking of doing Alpine to bypass the bad parts of LRT – I take it you’ve done that and it works?
Yes, it works for the length of Alpine, but there are “bad parts” of LRT that Alpine doesn’t cover. It will get you from Evergreen almost to Old Columbia, though.

ParticipantDC to Purcellville on the W&OD is about 70-80 miles round trip, isn’t it? And mostly flat.

Or sign up for the Arlington Fun Ride, where we will have them too….
So Diamond Derby and Fun Ride will both have cowbells? We plan on doing the Fun Ride. We’ll be the father and daughter walking up the Rosslyn hill, with the daughter complaining that the father wasn’t pedaling enough.

Sorry to disappoint, but the BikeArlington cowbells will have the BikeArlington logo on them:

My daughter’s going to go nuts with that on her trail-a bike. She’s going to go more nuts if she sees one but doesn’t get her own.

ParticipantI’ve heard this story before, but I’ve never been able to figure out why the monk was upset that his friend carried the woman. Sounds to me like a cyclist complaining that a car proceeded through a green light at a safe speed.

ParticipantI drove in today too, and I wasn’t happy about it — even though there was no traffic. I’m really going to hate it on the way home. It was my first missed bike commute since early June.

Nearly every time I read I think how nice it would be to have a Benelli with a bike sling. I could commute and rustle up dinner at the same time.

No marshmallow skewers with some duct tape or super glue?
I confess that I had to Google “marshmallow skewers” to get your joke. We aren’t very chi-chi in my family. I’ve always used a coat hanger, stick, or fork to roast marshmallows.

ParticipantThe Bike Shop on 24th Street got the freewheel off — it took two men and a stronger vice than REI’s to get it loose. Now to get the wheel true again.
