I am not sure what area you are having trouble with. You can take the Mt. Vernon Highway to Fort Belvoir. Show the guard an driver’s license and you can ride across the base to US 1 at Braddock Road. Take Braddock to the FFX County Parkway. This has a side path or you can use the huge paved shoulder. Exit at Telegraph Road. Left on Telegraph which becomes Old Colchester Road at US 1. Follow Old Colchester to US 1 again at the Occoquan River.
After that its car hell
Which gates are you entering and leaving the base? Where’s Braddock Road at Rt 1? Do you mean Pohick? And if you’re able to ride across the base with just a license, could you ride directly from the housing area on Mt Vernon Hwy, across the southern portion of the base by the hospital, to Old Colchester, skipping FFX Cty Parkway and Telegraph entirely?

I apologize to my team in advance…as I transition to my rotation downtown sometime in the next couple weeks, I’ll probably be off the bike for several days while I figure out the particulars of bike commuting to the new office. Of course, given that neither my new office or my current office seems to know how to make my rotation happen, the contest could be over by the time I move.
There’s no clock limit, so feel free to make up any missed rides after dinner.

ParticipantNo work, so I went for a ride this morning. I saw 4 bikes between Reston and East Falls Church.
I had checked the trees for wind before leaving, but obviously I should have looked longer. I almost got knocked down a couple of times.

ParticipantHit: Sugoi Wallaroo merino long sleeve jersey. Got this on clearance from REI in August and can’t live without it since it started getting colder – as every forum member who’s seen me since October can attest (which is kind of embarrassing, but I don’t care). Warm and comfortable and van go for days between washes.
Hit: UltraFire mini tactical flashlight. Someday I’ll have a Diablo, but until then this is the best $13 I’ve ever spent. It’s very bright.
Miss: Vaude lightweight rain jacket. It repels rain and blocks wind very well. It even looks decent. But it’s unventilated and doesn’t breathe at all. I can only wear it for the first few miles of my commute, at the most. Maybe I’ll like it better in January and February.

I just bought these – wearing them right now – and liking them quite a bit so far. I bought them last week while they were on sale ($55 down from $110) and they’re certainly a good deal at $55.
And yet you didn’t put them in the Good Deals thread at the time. For shame, sir.

ParticipantI got the latter. Sad panda.

1. Whatever it is that makes this happen.
(i don’t like you either. cyclemeter says I have burned 124797 calories riding my bike in 2012, and YET I HAVE LOST ZERO POUNDS, despite not being particularly gluttonous.)
But how much did you ride in 2011? I’m sure you started off the year looking great.
2012 was a shock to my system — from 50 miles at the most in 2011 to 3400 or so this year. I plan to give it another shock in 2013 with a new commute.
