ParticipantThe police presence did the trick. You don’t see as much aggressive driving as before. It’s still a damned scary place to ride a bike though.

ParticipantDon’t take this so personally. I was driving in DC on Sunday and the number of boneheaded, dangerous, aggressive things I saw drivers do was truly impressive.

ParticipantThis is especially messed up because the SUV had to cross three sets of rumble strips to get to that crosswalk.

ParticipantHard to say. It’s usually dark when I pass him. It may be that he doesn’t understand that he is unusual, that most trail users prefer to be warned when they are about to be passed. Still, he bears keeping and eye on. If he escalates, he needs to be reported to the authorities

ParticipantThere’s a walker who I have passed near Daingerfield Island on the Mount Vernon Trail who gets really upset when I ring my bell. He turns and yells at me as I pass. 2x this week

ParticipantBill Rodgers ran a marathon in his blue jeans in the winter Massachusetts to qualify for his first Boston Marathon. No cheap alternatives except sweat pants back in the day.

ParticipantFirst year it was cider and snacks.

ParticipantThanks for the heads up on this. I just submitted comments: (1) Keep accommodating the WABA bike school, (2) provide a safe place for kids to learn (even when not part of the school), (3) revisit the ludicrous bollards and high curbs, (3) consult WABA and ABPAC before new construction so that we don’t have a repeat of the dangerous detours during the re-building of the park a few years ago.

ParticipantWill there be courtesy flushes?

ParticipantPersonally I have a much bigger problem with handlebar mounted lights that throw out a massive beam of light. I will, however, desist from using blinking light mode on the trails.
BTW it is not true that blinking mode is visually useless. I can see the trail ahead just fine with mine. One reason people use blinking mode is to preserve battery power. My light will work for days on blink mode.

ParticipantLooks like the post ride celebration will be longer than the ride. Well done, WABA

ParticipantNear Ford’s Landing where the trail turns toward the Wilson Bridge a teenage boy exposed himself to me as I was riding home about ten years ago. I think I caught him a moment after he relieved himself and he reacted idiotically. Still you never know.
On a much more serious note, a young woman was raped and murdered on the Custis Trail in 1990. It happened behind the high wall on the hill leaving Rosslyn. Lighting is better there now but the area is still shielded from view. The perpetrator was executed in 2010.

ParticipantN. Madison? That’s a new one.
Did anyone give any stats showing an increase in collisions with pedestrians?

ParticipantI have Marathons on my Bike Friday and the front of my Tour Easy recumbent (20″ wheels). They last a long time and are very puncture resistant (not wanting to jinx myself here).
I have used 700×35 and 700×32 Marathons on my touring/commuting bike and on the rear of my recumbent. Very reliable. They may be a little heavier than other tires but the time lost to their weight is made up by not having to spend 20 minutes a month fixing flats.
I currently have a 700×35 Marathon Plus on the front of my touring/commuting bike. It’s been on there for nearly a year and probably 4,000 miles. No punctures yet and looks like it has many more miles in it. Unless you are riding through very nasty stuff on a regular basis I’d say the regular Marathons are sufficient for commuting.
I am a snow wimp so I can’t say whether these are good on snow.Rootchopper
ParticipantEnforcement seems to have gone away. I haven’t seen a ticketing cop in my last four commutes.
Last night riding south on Union Street a white SUV passed me as I came to a stop at a stop sign. The SUV driver never touched her brakes, blowing through the stop sign at about 20 miles per hour. An elderly man stood at the corner of the intersection. His jaw dropped and he raised his hand as if to say, “What the hell?!” Having stopped at the sign, I turned to him and said, “And bicycles are the problem?”The driver pulled her SUV over aggressively about 100 feet down the road. As I passed her I saw her fiddling with her cell phone.
