ParticipantThere’s a woman on East Capitol who sings a little ditty to scofflaw cyclists. I’ll be waiting at a red light, smugly basking in my own self-righteousness. She’ll be next to me at her bus stop, basking in her own eccentricity and vegan shoes. And every time a cyclist comes through and runs the light she’ll sing out something like “Oh look at you, aren’t you: above the law; a very important person; a special snowflake; etc.”
I’ve tried adding accompaniment with my Crane bell, but sadly I lack the rhythm necessary for percussion instruments.

ParticipantThis sort of trail rage goes both ways. As an early morning runner I’ve had cyclists on the W&OD shout at me, even curse me out, because I wasn’t well lit enough for their taste. Typically they’re right on top of me and it because it’s unexpected it comes as quite a shock. Eventually I got tired of having to deal with this Lycrapathic behavior and started wearing one of my red bike blinkies when I run. Then I had a cyclist come up right behind me and shout his appreciation at how visible I was, which also made me jump. Oh, well.

There’s a walker who I have passed near Daingerfield Island on the Mount Vernon Trail who gets really upset when I ring my bell. He turns and yells at me as I pass. 2x this week
Is the the older Asian gentleman who is frequently there in the evenings? One time that guy jumped over toward me screaming, so I stopped and informed him that by the law and the rules of the trail I’m required to give an audible signal when passing, which is why I rang my bell. He was unimpressed to say the least and kept yelling at me, so I got on my bike and wished him a good day. Most people thank me for using my bell or at least give a hand signal acknowledging it. It definitely surprised me how angry he got at something that seems so insignificant.

ParticipantHard to say. It’s usually dark when I pass him. It may be that he doesn’t understand that he is unusual, that most trail users prefer to be warned when they are about to be passed. Still, he bears keeping and eye on. If he escalates, he needs to be reported to the authorities
