Don’t get me wrong: I love Lutherans! When I worked for the Lutherans, they taught me how to brew beer. I have since given up brewing for cycling. Anybody want to buy some home brewing equipment?

Dude, please, please, anyone want brewing equipment?

This morning, a school bus stopped on the other side of the street from me and put on its flashers and stop sign. I stopped. The driver started knocking on his window and waved me past, while he was stopped. It was a little odd. Like, really? I’m trying to be a law-abiding cyclist.

Why bother with a new headset? I would think if the old one worked, just leave it alone (after repacking).

They have quill stems with modern handlebar attachments. That may make more sense than an adapter plus stem.

New saying at the DKel household, WWDD?

DKel: Can I buy [insert random bike tool]?
    Me: WWDD? Also, HFAOYDAY?

Monday evening, as I was attempting some Cat 6 racing on the way home, out of the misty dusk came a salmon. Right at me. In the Gallows bike lane. I’ve heard of these creatures before, but never seen one in the wild, swimming upstream. Thankfully, he was more scared of me then I was of him, particularly when I realized I was, um, yelling at him. He hugged the curb (hope he has gatorskins!) and we passed without incident.

Arlington already handles a few public services for Falls Church such as firefighting and I believe the local court. Fairfax handles another gov’t service in Falls Church, but I don’t remember which one. So there’s a precedent.

Falls Church City has a General District Court, but the Arlington Circuit Court is the court of general jurisdiction and hears larger actions. We have our own volunteer fire department, which is located just in Arlington, but has responsibilities for all of Falls Church City, and parts of Arlington and Fairfax Counties. I don’t know what Fairfax County does for us – we now own all the property the four schools sit on, we have a library, a mayor and a skate park on the way! ;)

All that said, it would be nice if FCC would pay Arlington to plow the trail, but are we missing the 10 point buck on the trail here, Fairfax County? So what if you can get to Broad Street ice-free, you won’t get further than Shreve Road.

So, this is more of a missed connection of sorts…

Not only did I lose some pride and skin off my knee on the ride last Saturday, but I lost my much beloved yellow jacket. It’s a Pearl Izumi women’s jacket, in classic screaming yellow. It was bungeed to my rack at the start in Crystal City, but wasn’t on the bike when we hit Columbia Pike. It could very well have fallen off, but the guy riding my wheel didn’t see it come off. (OK, he’s 10 years old, but still, I think it would have been noticed in the crowd.) It could have been taken by mistake, those things are ubiquitous. It could have been liberated somehow.

Anyway, anyone find/take/end up with a yellow jacket they didn’t start out with?

I remember we did it the same way we ended up teaching the kids how to swim – lots of consistent practice. We struggled a little bit with the bike riding until realizing we needed to practice every day for 5 minutes or so. When we did it every-so-often or just on the weekends, it wasn’t happening. When we switched to every evening, it was easier.

No, we brought up the rear. Remember when I encouraged the sweeps to go ahead? “We know the way, Thanks.”

Yesterday caught me, and I suspect others, a little off guard. I was enjoying work so much (!) that when I noticed it was 6:45 and I hadn’t left, it was pretty dark. Thankfully I have some lights and got home just fine. The whole way I was thinking that runner/cyclist/kid/car/ninja/pothole should have lights. It’s getting darker earlier and yesterday was pretty cloudy. Bah.

I just had a surprisingly long talk with Rockford10 about rain gear, and she and I don’t have the same feelings on the topic. It’s apparent to me that everyone’s comfort level and needs are different, so there’s no right or wrong answer, aside from what works or doesn’t work for you. Unfortunately, spending money is usually required before you can figure that out.

I just don’t melt in the rain and it’s never bothered me that much. I do have some “rain resistant” pieces, but with the length of my commute and the fact that there is a warm shower and dry clothes at the end of the ride, I have no interest in spending real cash on rain gear. I can see myself making one of the Ikea hack ponchos, but would rather buy another wool icebreaker top.

I note that DKel’s on his second set of rain gear in the past 12 months. REI’s return policy rocks when the pants no longer repel rain.

I am a lawyer and I play one on tv. I think I know the answer and it’s about what jabberwocky says. All that aside, seriously, if anyone gets arrested or ticketed for causing a car to pass them in the other lane, I will represent you pro-bono. Don’t call me if it’s for public urination or littering though.
