ParticipantWell that Google translate challenge couldn’t go unanswered.

My Latin teacher father would be scandalized at the very idea of Google Translate.

ParticipantAs Dasgeh mentioned the bike racks on Metro buses along with the iNextBus app is a great way to let the bus do the hill climb for you. Just about any of the 16th St or 14th St buses will get take you above the real elevation change from downtown and make for a pleasant, side street ride to Takoma. For riding to Takoma I try to get east as soon as possible from 11th St as 5th St is a much lower traffic ride than anything west of Georgia Ave.

If you don’t mind me asking, what route do you take from Metro Center to Takoma Park? I bike from Takoma to Alexandria in the morning, so when I bike back, I’m usually a bit too worn down to go all the way back. I come down 11th st mostly.
That’s the main reason why I take the metro back.

ParticipantEveryone is being rather chill about this given the magnitude of the closure. How long do you suppose it would take for Congress ( bless their pointed little heads ) to revoke home rule if the city announced that 16th St NW would be closed for a month?

Regardless, for all who use this lane regularly (NB, at least), I’d like to see you on 15th, taking the lane as is your legal right. Let’s remind those crazy drivers who profess to hate bike lanes what happens when we don’t have real bike infrastructure.

ParticipantTwo panniers have worked for me for many years with the soft stuff on top. I also have a nylon jacket and shopping bag that can make a nice, cushy pad between the lower and upper packs when needs be. One pretty crucial part of grocery shopping by bike is getting used to the idea that it isn’t going to be a weekly trip with all the supplies filling up the back of the old mini van. I hit the grocery almost every other day picking up just a few items at a time. It harks back to the pre-automobile days of shopping but at least the Whole Foods in Silver Spring is far more pleasant and accessible than the Giant.

ParticipantA moment of grandparent perspective if I may.
No matter how bad a parent you think you may be by omitting eye protection or what ever else scares the bejezus out of you this week your kids are going to have a much better chance at growing up healthy and whole than say their predecessors in the 9th century and even the 19th century. After all a fair number of them survived to wind up with us as the result despite far worse than a lack of eye protection OR helmets.
Now if the worst case scenarios from the climate scientists do turn out to be true then perhaps not so much for the next century but we’re not there yet.
( from someone old enough to fondly remember us kids in the elementary school class excitedly gathering around to play with the beads of mercury in our hands that came from the broken thermometers )

I’ve always been happy with my “cars R coffins” sticker next to my WABA stickers. They have a nice synergy of graphic design despite being ten years and 1000 miles apart in origin.

ParticipantWhew, for a minute there I thought the Rush Limbaugh listeners were going to say Bo the dog rode a bike all the way from DC to MA and even Rush wouldn’t claim that.
