As much as I liked the Jump bikes ( before Uber bought them ) I suspect that the viability of rental E bikes is limited. The bikes require too much hands on care in charging and maintenance to be sustainable. Even worse in the long run is that someone will sooner or later realize that the external plastic battery packs are worth about $500 and vandalism / theft will likely go much higher than the kids hot-wiring a couple of scooters phenomena. This grousing is more about seeing CaBi put more resources in to filling in the blanks in their current dock locations. Large parts of the city and close in burbs are underserved by CaBi as it is.

Thanks for the tips. I’m thinking about riding the new e bike ( no e-bike hate in this thread plz ). Wonder if the security droids will squawk if I bring in the battery?

I’ve been bike commuting year round for about ten years now and this is something I’ve noticed that a great many riders don’t get about riding at night in urban areas. You can’t carry enough lighting power on your bike to compete with the street lights, store lights and car / truck lights. What i do and suggest to everyone who rides on city streets is to light up your bike and yourself in addition to front and rear lights. There are many solutions including lights that weave into your spokes. I make a point of buying light colored bikes that reflect light and then Velcroing ( spell check is not pleased with that ) cheap Costco LED flashlights set to the strobe function to the bike frame pointing down at the street. I ride in a flashing pool of light with my frame and legs brightly lit. I’ve had more than one motorist comment on how easy I am to be seen in traffic. Music to my ears. A helmet light is also a handy thing for spotting potholes so yea I ride with four lights minimum at night.

One thing to watch out for if you’re switching from driving to riding regularly is that eventually you’ll only know the bike route to many places and having to occasionally drive will perplex you to no end. Parking lots will become particularly vexing. l-)

THIS is why we wear helmets.

A chronic problem with celebrities. One persons’ instantly recognizable heartthrob is the next persons ” why is that woman dressed so oddly and wearing so much make up?”.

Man, are these particular churches really churches or organized crime syndicates? It’s sad they get away with this unlawful behavior – I suppose it’s because of corruption in the DC government – “I scratch your back, you look the other way” kind of stuff.

Silver Spring always has a good turn out but then it’s the only pit stop I’ve been to other than Freedom Plaza so my perspective is limited and skewed by it being my home base.

Very bummed to be out of town for this. Tried to talk my daughter into biking to the Lincoln from Bethesda with her family but the compromise was that they will drive their bikes to the Arlington Cemetery parking lot and ride across the bridge. Sigh …

Well duhhhh … Guys don’t do stupid stuff like that. :p We do have to cut the rider some slack here. The PSA is clearly shot in the UK and it has to be confusing as hell riding around with all the cars and trucks on the wrong side of the street.

I was warm and toasty for my three mile commute this morning from my head to my ankles. Despite wearing my heavy Blundstone boots however my feet are STILL cold more than an hour after getting to work.

Still, it was more fun than driving aside from the fuel oil truck forcing me off the road.

French wine and we have a complete circle.

Those parts of Paris that I’m familiar with are much less hilly than DC but then what would a tourist know. As encouraging as this report sounds I don’t think the US will see this sort of tectonic shift in policy until we are looking at the equivalent of $10 a gallon motor fuel. The US is simply too hardwired on a cultural level to private car ownership to turn that corner short of mass pollution related casualties or substantial disruption to the global petro fuel market. Color me pessimistic.

Adding a vote for the low end solutions here. I ride with four lights as a rule and no single light cost more than $30. I have to consider lights to be semi-expendable and buy accordingly but I also consider them absolutely vital to safe urban riding. My current helmet light is a cheap Planet Bike bar light held on with a velcro strap as it’s ‘quick release’. My real bar light is another planet bike set for strobe. I also have an eight LED red rear light that has a very disturbing flash pattern – just perfect for making people look twice. Last but not least I have a Costco cheap Chinese flashlight set for strobe and dangling from my saddle to illuminate my bike frame. I also keep a spare LED flashlight in the pannier. I just can’t compete with a windshield full of car headlights and store windows on candlepower so looking visually jarring is my fallback position.
