The first was in Falls Church… Dude yelled “WTF???” at me for stopping as he sped out into traffic where an SUV had to slam on the brakes to avoid him.
Second was in Rosslyn. Dude had to slow way down because he couldn’t just blow by me stopped because there were pedestrians around. He called me “Ranger Rick” without the “Ranger” part and I think there might have been another consonant stuck in at the front. it might have been the letter “P”. Truly well thought out discourse. I met each of them a few minutes later and asked if they wanted to repeat what they’d said. I hadn’t heard them correctly. They didn’t. I was a good bicycle advocate after that and rode behind them for a while talking about bicycle safety. The first guy tried to drop me, but couldn’t. I was with him for almost 10 minutes talking about bicycle safety. I ran out of intelligent things to say about 3 minutes into the one-sided conversation, so I kind of wandered off into horrible tales of people who broke the traffic laws and got squished. The second guy turned off pretty quickly after I started lecturing.

ParticipantYou could always post the video on line with some editorial content. Cathartic for you and bit of salacious voyeurism for us.

ParticipantCame ( to the thread ) for the snicker at the car commuter trauma drive by, stayed for the joy of riding moment.

Since this is my personal post (I seem to be the only one posting here), I would like to annouce that I hit 4400 miles for the year on my ride home tonight (12 miles short of doubling last years miles!)

ParticipantLargely because I haven’t done any of the installs you’ve just done and are contemplating I gotta ask. Once the rear wheel was pulled and the new wheel and cassette ready to install isn’t the substitution of a new chain for the old a relatively minor addition of time and effort? Cluelessness demands illumination as the cassette and chain on my Coda are getting flakey ( only the third chain in ten years ) and my iphone bike repair app makes it all look sooooooo eeeeeeeeeasy.

So I finally got a new rear wheel and cassette last night. I installed them both with no problems. I also bought a new chain, but didn’t have time to install it last night. …

ParticipantAs distinct from the creepiness factor of checking the WABA forum obsessively? 😮

When I say I check thewashcycle.com, I am actually checking Google Reader along with all the rest of my feeds (too many feeds). Am I being creepy??

ParticipantThanks for the link to your blog. Definitely worth it for the “ticket for not riding in the bike lane” video at a minimum. :p

ParticipantGee Zuss. I’ve spent a lifetime trying to NOT have that mental image in my head every time a dump truck pulled up next to me and now it’ll be on the TV news. Glad to read the “non-life threatening injuries” tag line but for just plain creepiness this one is way up there. Next question is how long before you see this tested on Myth Busters?

ParticipantThe calculator I found on line called out a 51″ road bike as being suitable for a low end height of 5ft 2″. I know Proteus works hard to do proper bike fitting but I fear that the only solution that would get me on a 51cm bike might involve a bone saw. 😮
Riley Casey
ParticipantThat Jamis had my ears perk up til I realized that 51cm was a bike for a person about a foot shorter than me.

ParticipantMetro does the up hill parts REALLY well. Living up hill from Eastern Market I can attest.

Sometimes, due to a limited ability to think, I forget that biking isn’t all or nothing. I used Metro to get into town and then took my time riding home.

ParticipantA bit of googling returned this http://fabb-bikes.blogspot.com/2011/08/riding-to-dulles-airport.html but precious little about bike parking at Dulles.

ParticipantObviously the doubts I expressed last week about clips were misplaced. I would add that I sprained my foot back in August and didn’t go to the doctor for a brace specifically because I had discovered that while it was painful and awkward to walk on the bad foot it was almost unnoticeable when riding. It was actually easier to ride than to drive in terms of the pain of operating the pedals when I drove eight hours back from Maine where I did the damage.
