ParticipantBut there are Inverted U’s spread about – there is a whole series down the block at the library. And there are Us spread about. So look for them. But Shirlington is bike-friendly meaning that there will already be a lot of bikes there. Shirlington is also dog friendly…. so someone bring there dog to guard the bikes!

ParticipantOutside! I would think they would want stinky sweaty cyclists outside.

ParticipantDead Said: The differences between a good driving day and a bad driving day are so random and unpredictable that
(A) Is Congress in session?
(Is school in session?
(C) Is it a Friday (or even a monday)? Those are strong predictors.

ParticipantDo we know this for sure?
The barriers were installed at the beginning of construction, after several us had close truck-experiences, and after several construction trucks were found wandering up the bike path along the parking lot. Several of us contacted NPS about the problem with the trucks, and the barriers magically appeared (as did the original speed bump – which we got moved 10 feet).
Do I know for sure, no. I know a time correlation that I contact NPS about keeping the trucks off of the trail – and the barriers emerged.

ParticipantWe have a guy on staff who lives in Baltimore, bikes to the train and locks it up, takes the train to Union Station where the Bike Station is, pulls out a 2nd bike that he has stored at the Bike Station, and then bikes across town to our office.
Another guy out in Vienna just bikes about a buck and half from his house to the Vienna Metro, where he locks it up.
I am looking into a bike locker at Dunn Lorring where a friend can store a bike that she will pick up after the subway right, to complete the journey to work.

ParticipantI have not bought a new bike in 25 years.
First, I agree with what the peanut gallery is saying. It really helps to know what you are looking for… and it helps to know a bit about bikes. That said, what are you looking for??? If you are looking for a high performance, going to do centuries, extension of your self bike… yeah, you might want new. If you are looking for a beater that you are going to chain up at the metro stop… pthhh…. you can get that at any yard sale.
I use to make my wife furious. We both do yard sales. I would declare that we needed a new bike, and within a week I would be home with a new bike from a yard sale. Bikes are a bit like exercise equipment. People tend to over buy thinking that if they spend a lot of money, they will be lance armstrong. Money dont make you lance any more than buying expensive clubs makes you Tiger. There is an abundant supply of used bikes floating around, as can be demonstrated by the boat loads of bikes the suburbs keep shipping to africa.
In my mind, bikes are like cars. You are paying a real premium to buy it new, and the value drops a few thousand dollars the second the wheels leave the lot. I dont know anything about cars; I buy them new and drive them into the ground. Bikes, I buy used.
Arlington Farmers Market Court House has a guy who sells bikes out of the back of his truck. Phoenix bikes is good Friday eve and Saturday Morn. First Saturday of every month there is a flea market in the garage over 66 at Washington & Lee. There is a guy there that sells bikes. Try Velocity bike coop.
My previous bike met its demise on Lincoln Memorial Circle. With the money the GEICO gave me, I went on craigslist and had my dream bike in a couple of weeks. I was able to look up the guy I bought it from and was fairly confident he had not stolen it. He let me test ride it for probably like an hour (round and round his block). I have been window shopping for a new bike, and knew what I wanted, when the need to replace arose.
Speaking of which, hey GuyContinental,
Also, if you happen to be tall (6’3″ +) I’ve been ordered to clear out a well cared for 60cm road bike with lots of nice bits.
Tell me more about your bike… I’m interested.

ParticipantI will just innocently observe that last time those plastic barriers were weighted down with water inside…. and in time the water seeped out…. and in time the barriers had no weight…. and could be moved.
The barriers were there to keep the construction trucks OFF of the bike path when they were renovating the island. Before they were installed there were several close calls.
Why do I hate them…. because the mid parking lot double 90 degree turn on a trail that is not wide enough for the turn, into a parking lot with idiot traffic…. is evil 😡 If they truly dont want bikes in the south end of the parking lot, fine, whatever… but fix the damn double 90. And make better curb cuts up to the trail… the current curb cuts are ADA curb cuts… not bike path curb cuts.
temporary
Sure. They have been there what 2 years? How long ago did the construction on the isle end??

ParticipantI believe the pictures are from Wakefield, where the CCT nears the beltway, on the western border of the beltway. I very very good MBT park. Also has a skatepark.

ParticipantVienna is directly on the CCT. Springfield Metro is near. You can metro to one end, and bike to the other metro stop. Vienna is also W&OD of course if that helps for connections.

ParticipantOh you are right (looking at map). I always thought the island went all the way down to the airport!

ParticipantRankings of local teams, based on their “national scores” (includes all of their team members), scores for the entire period. Yes, I am probably missing a few teams. “Change” is the change in rank; if your teams “change” value is negative, then you dropped in ranking since June 14. Most local teams improved their ranking!!!!!

ParticipantIf you ride your bike into a bollard, that is not the bollard’s fault.
As a matter of law, yes it is. This is known as a design flaw, and is a tort. If you can anticipate injury by your design, and you fail to design to eliminate that risk, it is your fault. It is your responsibility to design in order to mitigate known risks.
Sort of like ships failing to carry emergency radios. If the captain drives it into an iceberg, its not the icebergs fault, its the captains. But the design flaw is that the ship needs to carry working radios, life boats, and life jackets.
In this case, bollards generally can be designed to minimize or mitigate injury. Where the designer (here the govt) fails to mitigate injury, they are at fault – regardless of how the anticipated accident happens.
