Carry it up the stairs. I had to do that after getting yelled at for using the escalators.

Then I won the battle for a bike rack in the parking garage. It sits outside now. :)

I am glad everyone seems ok. You made it home. One of my friends in a car gave up and she pulled off the road with her sister and child but found a hotel room.

Wow, glad she’s alright. Some of my coworkers had to abandon cars as well, and one slept in her back seat under an overpass.

W&OD is not passable in Herndon, so I took all surface roads. Piece of cake with the studded tires.

I stopped counting abandoned cars at 70. Saw at least half a dozen trees down, a few power lines, and a couple of stuck plows.

I rode home in the worst of it. Left work at 3:30 and got back to Herndon right at 5 frozen like a popsicle. Not bad though from McLean to Herndon! It usually takes me 1:00 on the CXB, about 1:15 in the winter, and 1:30 tonight in the HEAVY snow on my studded tire MTB. Basically right on schedule with a little delay!

Every road was gridlock in every direction. W&OD was about 4-6″ thick, but it was absolutely dumping snow. Slow going with the hardcore headwind, but otherwise that wasn’t bad.

I am glad to be home and warm with my feet up though.

For the Lake 302s, try Bikeman! Mine shipped same-day and I got em within 2-3 days.

The Bike Lane in Reston has em, but Bikeman has them a full hundred dollars cheaper.

Didn’t expect this, but there was a VDOT light up sign informing us of the Thursday closure. Normally they put up a few pieces of paper which are invisible to us night commuters.

    Thanks VDOT.

Can I replace the sprockets and salvage the rest of it?

Wow Pete, those Moose Mitts are AWESOME! I want a pair now!

BTW: Still have that beard? If so, I think I’ve passed you going the opposite way a few times on the trail – or a reasonably bearded facsimile.

Same here on the record. Not really sure if I want to break it :)

But no wind? Ya weren’t pedaling hard enough !!! LOL

I did the math this morning… 7 degree air temp + 25 mph bike speed = -15 wind chill. Booyah!

BTW: Are the rumors true of another deer culling this week? I haven’t seen any signs, because it’s pitch black when I’m out there. :P

A couple brands worth checking out would be: Cycleops, Kurt Kinetic, and Blackburn.

I’ll second Tim. I had a Cycleops trainer a few years ago and warmed up on it before winter rides. Traded it for a set of shifters though… it was one of those long days. :)

6.8°F at the house when I left this morning at 0545. Roughly 5.2°F out on the W&OD trail via. my Kestrel meter, and 12°F according to the bank clock in McLean at 0700.

When I arrived, my helmet straps were ice, my facemask was white with ice, and for the first time ever, the INSIDE of my jacket was ice. That’s right, my sweat froze to the inside of my jacket. Winter commuting is like a daily science experiment isn’t it!

That all said, I was roasty warm due to very careful planning in my winter gear. Even after 20 miles, I was just fine.

Today ties a 6° ride from Winter 2010 as my second coldest ride ever. Coldest was 4° in the Winter of 2009. Brrrrrrr!

    Mercifully, NO WIND! :)

    Stay warm!!!

Yeah, if I park at Reston you probably pass my car when you ride.. When I park there it’s in the lot by the trail right at 7-11.

Parked in the shopping center up by Performance today, since I had to pick up a chain on the way home.

The Mazda? If so, we’ve chatting a couple times out there. Just like my avatar, I’m the one with the green lighting who goes painfully slow all winter. :P
