ParticipantAfter years of smart wool, neoprene covers, and plastic bags, last winter found me investing in Lake MX302s. A week later, it was FOUR DEGREES one morning. At the end of my 18 mile commute, my toes were still warm!!!
Expensive? Yep.
Worth it? OH HELL YEP!

ParticipantGorgeous ride for me too. Snow falling, clear (wet) trail, and otherwise very peaceful. My bike needs a bath so so bad…

Participant0705-0715, W&OD between Herndon (MM20) and Reston (MM18) was damp but clear, no ice. Extremely foggy and muggy though. Glad I had my fender.

I cried when I saw the snow this afternoon. They were not tears of pride.
Mine were tears of joy!

ParticipantI might pull out the MTB, but honestly I doubt it. I don’t think we’re going to have a major ice-up tonight.

ParticipantI spent the morning shooting, and the afternoon in shorts and short sleeves cleaning my firearms in the garage with the door open and the tunes CRANKED. GORGEOUS weather!
And it’s snowing right now.

Haha, I used to live right near here too (in the apartments next to the Pimmit-Tysons library). If you don’t mind possibly dismounting a few times for potential curbs/pedestrians and riding on the occasional sidewalk you can go on service roads alongside 7 all the way to Magarity (check out the Street View around there). This way you could skip the backroads of Pimmit Hills.
You suffered the world of Peachtree too?
SO glad I moved out.

ParticipantI look at it this way, if it’s too miserable with snow/ice to be out on my MTB, then I REALLY don’t want to be out in my car putting myself and my family at risk of the countless acts of stupidity of NoVA drivers. I stay home.
Although the day after the January snowstorm, I rode to work anyway. Cars were barely moving, and I had a blast pedaling past a few.

ParticipantI used to live right there actually (for about six years). Get off the trail at the bridge over 7 in West Falls Church and just stick to 7, it’s a straight shot. If you’re comfortable riding on the road, it’s an easy trip. I’ve biked that area more times than I could ever count.

Participant25 and falling with 20+ mph headwinds? Sure. Bring it.

Participant2011 was a good year. Primary commuter bike got hit by a car, driver’s insurance bought me a new roadie. 165 of 165 workdays biked for a total of 3,468 miles. A full thousand less than the last two years because of my new office and short commute, but otherwise not bad.
This was my 3rd consecutive 100% bike-to-work year. 75% in 2008, and literally every day since 22 May 2008.
Here’s to an even better 2012, and year #4!

ParticipantEh, I’m waterproof. I don’t even bother with rain gear, that’s just more to have to dry out.
Both commutes yesterday were miraculously without rain. Trail was wet in the evening though. EMPTY EMPTY EMPTY!!!

ParticipantThe BB5 will still pull me into an endo if I grab it hard, I’m not disappointed with them at all. Next time I build a snow bike, I’ll go bigger (maybe even a 29er), but for a budget build, the BB5s rock.

ParticipantAdd in my vote for Armadillos. I’m nearing 10,000 miles of EVERY day commuting on them with zero flats!!! *knock on rubber*

ParticipantImpressive!!! I was on page for about 6,200 commuting miles this year, but moved to an office a stone’s throw from home back in May. 4 mile commute = I’m sitting at a meager 3,400 miles for the year.
You guys are my heros.
