ParticipantIt’s just an informal endeavor. No one is getting paid to create a forum dictionary here. I think you may be taking the idea a little too seriously. Yes, sometimes there are confusing terms used, but it’s easy enough to ask. The forum dictionary was a throwaway idea. People can use it or not. You can combine the posts into a concise series of posts yourself and take ownership of the dictionary thread, if you like. It’s really not the most important part of the forum. It’s not really in top shape because most people probably don’t see it as something too important.

ParticipantThere can’t be complete consensus on what it means. I know this because I am in conflict with myself. I use the term to mean different things on different days. Depending on the weather, or the rate of inflation or speeding up/slowing down of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun, or if I biked that day. Or not.

ParticipantAdditional background on the event, from The Washington Business Journal:
They are describing it as a “massive bike ride” for some reason. Probably because they are comparing it to NYC’s Five Boro Bike Tour.
– Capital Sports Ventures (CSV) is the organizer. Founding sponsors include Events DC, CareFirst BlueCross BlueShield, and WABA.
– They expect 8,000 riders this year and up to 18,000 in future years.
– Tickets cost $50 until Feb. 28. Then $60 after that.
– This is CSV’s first event. CSV is a “sports-focused venture capital firm and consultancy” founded in 2013 by Greg Bibb, former executive at Monumental Sports & Entertainment (the company run by Ted Leonsis, and used as the ownership/operations structure for the Wizards, Capitals, Mystics, Verizon Center, the Kettler Iceplex in Ballston, and the Patriot Center on the GMU campus). CSV’s mission: sports advising, investment in sports-related businesses and event creation.
– The event costs in the “high six-figures.”
– It is a for-profit event.
– Some proceeds will go toward WABA’s participation in the nationwide Vision Zero campaign. WABA will run an event in each ward of DC regarding traffic safety. They will also host a regional summit to get jurisdictions to sign on to Vision Zero. (DC and Montgomery County have signed on. I think that means they have committed to the summit.)
– The event includes a post-ride festival with live entertainment on Constitution Ave NW near the U.S. Capitol. The performers have not been announced yet.

Just ask Bob and Shawn. They seem to have it figured out.
Or maybe they have tricked enough people into voting or have picked up on something unique about the word. Or bribery may be at play. Lots of water bottles and bike lights exchanging hands.

How about one a bit more concise and a little less equivocative
A multi-post thread is the only way to have a glossary or dictionary on this forum. There’s a character limit for a single post. Eventually the dictionary would have to be split up into multiple posts.
As far as agreeing on definitions, since they are all informal or slang or made-up words, there may never be agreement on them. We’re still trying to figure out what ELITE truly means.

This brings up a good point; a forum glossary for the new members.
Heck for older members as well…there’s trail section nicknames that I’m still not sure where/what they mean
There’s a Forum Dictionary thread, pinned on the main board.

However, the definitions are added in separate posts in that thread.

ParticipantI think all those planets might be visible today around now. I’m heading outside now to see if I can spot them all.
EDIT – 6:40 am was too late. The sunlight was already starting to overshadow the planets. Venus and Jupiter were very clear. I could barely make out Saturn and Mars (which appears reddish, even from this distance). I couldn’t see Mercury though.
It will be cloudy and raining tomorrow morning. It might be cloudy on Thursday morning. The next chance to see all the planets at the same time will probably be on Friday morning.
Planets appear as fixed points of light, whereas stars (other than the Sun) appear to flicker in the sky.
EDIT 2 – This article says that 80 minutes before sunrise is a better time to look. That’s around 5:50 am in DC, this week.

ParticipantS EADS STREET PROTECTED BIKE LANES – 95% CLEAR
From Glebe Rd to 18th St. A few snow patches still jut out into the lane, including at 23rd St in the southbound lane. Other than that, all the snow is gone. The County plowed through some of the big snowbanks. The others have melted or have receded and are outside of the lane.

ParticipantAll 360 bike stations are in service as of 4:45 pm today! Many have been open for the past few days, but some were still closed until this afternoon.
They have also resumed rebalancing operations.

I don’t know about Arlington, but a stone’s throw across the river, it’s pouring right now. Which is nice if it ends before my commute home later tonight. Of course, these piles of snow don’t seem to be going anywhere.
It has been raining in Arlington too.

ParticipantThis route mirrors much of the route for the Marine Corps Marathon and parts of the Army Ten-Miler running races. I think it’s a good route. It passes by many of the famous monuments, memorials and historic districts (National Mall, Georgetown, Capitol Dome, Washington Monument, Jefferson Memorial, Watergate, Pentagon and the Kennedy Center). Wilderness areas tend to look the same. They are nice but not distinguishable. Especially for out-of-town visitors or people from the distant suburbs who don’t travel to DC that often, the monuments and memorials are the bigger draw. There are plenty of places to ride around in natural settings in the suburbs and exurbs already.
While we can ride past the monuments and memorials any day, it’s rare to do so without having to worry about car traffic. Unfortunately it seems that the section in Georgetown runs on the Whitehurst Freeway. I guess that’s the best option for large numbers of cyclists, but it’s not scenic. You can see the tops of some nearby buildings, but it’s not the same as traveling through the older sections of Georgetown. The small, narrow neighborhood streets wouldn’t be able to handle hundreds of cyclists at a time, so I understand the decision.
