I am always the advocate of riding those trails on the cross bike. I think it’s a blast. It turns fairly non-technical trails into something that is really engaging. I will say, though, that I have enjoyed putting larger (38-42mm) tires on my cross bike for those trails. Especially the newer more technical stuff is more fun on bigger tires. Of course, I went bombing down that hill to the creek and cut my sidewall a couple weeks ago, so I learned that it’s still not quite a mountain bike
Previously I would always ride (usu. w/ GuyContinental) on 32mm tires and while my Kenda Kommandos (tubeless) made the trek through Lake Fairfax many times (without flatting once!), one does have to ride carefully on the small tires. It certainly is different than riding on the MTB. Log hopping, in particular, tends to make a mockery of the much-more-roadie geometry of my cross bike. But if one was going to ride there and back, it seems like a great option (faster on the pavement or gravel sections for sure).
Psh. Cross bike.
(Just that one ride made me a wee bit better at MTB techniques)

ParticipantI’m maybe probably thinking of possibly the 40 miler. I’ve biked sections of that route at different times, and can put up a reasonable masquerade of not endangering myself.
I will also very likely bike to the start and from finish, because … well, that’s how I get around.

To be honest, 65 and raining sounds better to me than 90 and sunny. You can always wear rain gear, but there’s nothing much you can do about heat.
A hundred times this. I’ve chickened out of riding more times in oppressive heat and humidity than in snow and ice.
(it helps that I grew up under the monsoons, so 65-ish and rain = home)

someone was doing a similar thing at Gallows and WOD. I wonder who that was (light changed so I didn’t ask)?
That was Dirt. At the very least, he was at Gallows & WOD and looked pretty content on the picnic chair out in the sun. A writing implement and notebook may have been involved.

ParticipantAlso, Velo Orange exists for precisely this sort of thing.

ParticipantTuesday, going North on Difficult Run/CCT, trying to get to Lake Fairfax.
The trail was as dry as I hoped, with muddy/puddly sections where the muddly/puddly sections always live (at least as far as I’ve seen).
And then this:
I’m also miffed that despite owning a Troll and going under multiple bridges, it occurred to me way too late that I’ve never taken a Troll-under-bridge photo.

Sorta like flared drops without the tops?
I call them Woodchippers for the indecisive, because the backward sweep is almost exactly the same.

Thought I was gonna be seeing some Enve disc fork goodness when I clicked through to here.
Hey, now. I have other bikes, all special, and I love them all equally in different ways.

ParticipantFinally going to see how this silliness works on an actual mtb ride this evening.

Thank you(?) for what little insanity I stuck around for – I’ve been spoiled by my 6 miles on the W&OD.
You are a crazy person and maybe some year I’ll finish this ride with you.

ParticipantOK, I’ve fed me some beer n meat, and enjoyed a night time ride on PA ave. So ready.

ParticipantHow terrible would it be if one were to play about on the Lake Fairfax trails post-work tomorrow?

ParticipantI managed to leave home at 7.30 today, which is a new record. A few more weeks, and I might even make it to one of these and meet you crazy daywalkers.

And that looks like exactly the sort of bike that can handle it.
I think we’ve crossed paths on the W&OD (going opposite directions) – that e-bike looks like a monkey-barrel of fun.

ParticipantAfter hemming und hawing, I’ve finally donated.
This .. means I’m in, doesn’t it? Sith.
All I ask is that when I drop, someone sweep me on to the sidewalk so I don’t get squelched by traffic.

First ride was January 5, 2013. To say I’ve had fun with that bike would be the worlds biggest understatement. The fit wasn’t wonky for me at all. Fits me perfectly — not entirely sure what that says about me.
Awesome.
The wonky fit is all me, I’m sure. I fit on short bikes with long-ish top tubes, and road bikes like that are bloody hard to find. I also cannot be trusted with generous tire clearances or utilitarian things like rack braze-ons, because fat tires and racks and thing-schlepping would be inevitable (case in point).
