A belated (but appropriate) deployment of a bicycle icicle:

    Me me me!

I thought long and hard about biking the 13(?) miles to the start, but this is more appealing.

She definitely doesn’t want a singlespeed (the genesis of this was her realizing how much hillier it is here compared to Florida and how much she wished she had gears for her commute :) ). IGH is a possibility, as long as the gear range is acceptably wide.

The 5-speed Sturmey Archer hub I have does have a pretty wide range. I run it with a 34t crank and 20t cog, and with that, 4th gear is standard for 90% of my riding, and 3rd works for many of the climbs on the Arlington loop. The one downside maybe is that the gaps between the gears are significant enough that you’d have to treat it more as a 5-mode singlespeed.

    Edit:
    I’m a doofus. Here’s a fun frameset for sale right here: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?6795-1990-Trek-420-frameset-seeks-new-home

If building from scratch is an option, an On-one frame (Pompino or Pompetamine, depending on canti/disc brake leanings) should maybe leave a decent amount of leftover budget, if singlespeed/internal hub is acceptable.

My Pompino build with Soma Iggy wheels (5 speed internal hub) came to about 800-ish, maybe.

My personal opinion is the Straggler is not very good value. You pay a lot of a bike with a fairly low end drivetrain and component group. In the same, I think the Salsa Vaya 2 is a better value or one of the Traitor Cycles bike like the Ruben. Better frame, better drivetrain spec for the same money. Nothing against the Straggler but if I built one I think I would build it from a frameset rather than a complete bike. That’s just my opinion. The brake caliper location on the Straggler is also not ideal.

But I am biased since I just built up a Vaya. However, I did consider the Straggler.

The Vaya, tragically, is not glittery pinky purple.

Oh this is totally on my list as well! I’m thinking it might have to wait until September before I can carve out a few days to pull it off although if anyone is planning on doing it let me know.

120 miles of touring-paced silliness in a go? I’m in.

I did 90 miles on the C&O once, so I’m tough as nails. Maybe less so with the hills. I tried to do the very first climb on the Custis just coming off the C&O that time, and the whole universe imploded.

Okay, Friends of the Intersection of Doom (well, not “friends” really :) )

Here’s what hasn’t worked much so far:
    – Putting notes on this here forum
    – Attending decades of BAC meetings and raising the issue with AC staff
    – Writing notes and letters to all sorts of “officials”
    – Standing at the intersection with ACPD and observing
    – Other _____________________ (your favorite ineffective action goes here)

    How about this?
Starting on a date TBD, every Monday during rush hours all the cyclists get off their bikes and walk them, single file, across the intersection, effectively taking up most of, or the entire, green light cycle. This is not illegal; in fact, there are plenty of drivers who complain about cyclists “racing into the intersection” or otherwise not behaving like pedestrians. We can call it DisMount Mondays. Traffic would back up onto I-66 and it would piss the drivers off. So be it. At least we’d all be safer crossing the street (maybe).

To get organized, some of us would hand out fliers or cards there for a few days or weeks ahead of time. Then on the first date, we’d be there to remind the cyclists. It might take a few weeks to really catch on, but after a while hopefully, DisMount Monday would become institutionalized. And self reinforcing. We would keep on–like critical mass rides–participating in DisMount Mondays every single Monday until real and effective action is taken. I’d be happy to be there on a Monday for an hour, walking back and forth across the intersection with every group of riders, reminding them to walk comfortably single file to the other side.

None of our other civilized efforts seem to have the tiniest effect. Perhaps some minor civil (dis)obedience would garner some attention.

I want to pretend that I’ll be able to wake up early enough to take the detour and make it for just this, I do.

Done and done. Now to toss multiple coins on deciding which bike I bring – will it be the big comfy overlander, or the whippy and delightful purple dinglespeed?

Ah, biking. Come for the exercise and the getting-to-places, stay for the gear-obsessing.

(Edit: in reply to a comment I made on their FB page, they told me they ran out of everything. Can’t fault them for that)

I actually saw that happen – 5.15-ish, collecting my swag (awesome Bikearlington sunglasses, no less), and while I’m stashing the sunglasses into my pannier and reach for a free bottle, a flood of cyclists descended upon the tent and took everything.

Very nice! What size rear wheel & tire?

Chunky Monkey up front, Smorgasboard in the rear.

This is decidedly a comfy overland rig mode – Fargo != Fastgo.

If you are SPD-curious, I have at least one set of spankin new cleats and multiple pedals I haven’t gotten around to posting ads for yet.

One pair of these pedals (beaten-up but still very functional M520s) I’ll give you for free, even – forum discount!

I was in Helsinki for a couple of days in 2012, and it was delightful. Most of the downtown area is pretty bike-friendly. The harbor bits have both cobblestones and streetcar tracks (simultaneously in some spots), and I watched a couple of cyclists get knocked about on those (nothing injured but pride).

Finnish is inscrutable. You know how you can read German or French and kinda guess at the meaning of some words? Forget about that.

    (but most people speak English)

The weather is going to be spectacular.

This is all I remember for now (at least, re bikes and related things).

Did I pass you this morning on 4MR on a single speed between W Glebe and Mt. Vernon Ave? Those handlebars look pretty distinct.

I assume that was for me; no, you certainly didn’t. Those handlebars are now on my newer commuter (which has an IGH) though, so maybe you’ve spotted me from the non-drive side at some point.

That, or it would seem I have a crazy-handlebar-brother to hunt down.
