Trash next to my ride snacks. What could go wrong?
If you want to climb like a goat, eat like a goat.

ParticipantYeah, I routinely put discarded aluminum cans in empty bottle cages. It’s fun walking toward the office with an empty beer can.

We should learn from what OTCA does, not whine about it.
Police allocation of resources should be based on real risk assessments, not comfort levels of populations with lots of time on their hands. This should not be an American Idol style contest to see who makes the most phone calls.
And enforcement should target real danger – police should not warn people on 30 pound bikes to obey controls while ignoring the very same infractions by people who drive 3000 pound vehicles during those very same enforcement activities, as has been reported.

Without delving deeper into this discussion, I would point out a pedestrian was killed by a vehicle in the eastern part of Del Ray earlier this month: https://www.washingtonpost.com/local/crime/woman-identified-in-fatal-hit-and-run-in-alexandrias-del-ray-neighborhood/2015/09/04/05159bba-5323-11e5-933e-7d06c647a395_story.html .
In response the City held a meeting in which the chief of police acknowledged traffic safety to be a problem and tried to explain to the hundred or so gathered residents why his department lacks resources to ticket motorists going twice the posted limit on the street where that woman was killed.
Five days later the police set up this anti-bicycle stakeout.
Police have undertaken this sort of all-day enforcement against people on bikes before but not without warning. Note: they still give advance notice for DUI operations, like this one less than a month ago.
Whoever said the OTCA goal is getting bikes off Old Town streets, I fear, is right.
Another interesting fact: budget documents show that traffic enforcement officers are expected to take in more revenue than they cost to employ. So why would a city ever cut traffic enforcement positions, as Alexandria did two years ago? Is there any rational explanation other than this: that Alexandria thought it didn’t need as much, or wanted to provide less, traffic law enforcement? That it didn’t want to get a reputation, like Falls Church, of actually enforcing speed limits?

ParticipantDasgeh for President!
Does anyone have tangible evidence that shows BPAC and WABA are not just reinforcing the scofflaw meme with the Old Town ambassador program?
Note: BPAC is short on volunteers this week. I wonder why. Could it be because even those of us who participated last year haven’t seen any tangible gains, but instead now see OTCA successfully redirecting police resources away from ticketing infractions that are routinely associated with actual, rather than hypothetical, injury?

ParticipantThank you!

ParticipantDo you have his contact info? I have an old steel (fillet brazed?) frame suddenly in need of tube replacement.

ParticipantIt’d be an awfully stupid design if you couldn’t load any vacant slot since you don’t know which cyclist will get off the bus first.

ParticipantStraps are only really dangerous if tightened. Cages with straps left loose are plenty safe — though nearly pointless.
I’d go with MTB clipless-ready shoes for starters. Once she gets more comfortable you can get her clipless pedals of whatever variety — maybe half-clipless (which I like & use on my touring & commuting rigs). But don’t invest in flat-only shoes.
And IMO running shoes also suck because the front of the shoe, while less padded than the heel, still wastes energy.

No, no, he (americancyclo) meant the bikenetic front page pic, where the uncut steerer extended beyond the top of the photo
Ok, thanks. Yeah, that’s nuts. Looks like it’s begging for gobs of accessories like the crazy mirror setups on the scooters in Quadrophenia.

I know it’s less stylish, but leaving an extra 5mm on top even when you know exactly what you want is not a bad idea since different headsets and different stems vary in stack height.
+1 Also you might keep the bike long enough that your riding position preference changes. You’re already using a positive rise stem…

great pic, but Hella uncut steerer tube
It’s dkel’s choice whether to circumcise and limit his options down the road, but IMO that’s very little excess steer tube. Is that really all that Soma provides?
Looks great. Glad you got it — IIRC soma had some supply problems (underestimated demand?).

ParticipantAlso “attached” photos don’t display although photos linked with bracketed markup language do. Tedious to switch to desktop to view pics that sound interesting.

ParticipantEveryone seems to love the MTB versions of the BB7s so why not save $ and go that route, especially with the long rear brake run?
I had the opposite experience with my Mundo. Was sure I’d ditch the cheap Promax Vs for disk but with Koolstop pads they’ve been great.

ParticipantAh, governors. I love these eat-our-own discussions.
The Feds have been pushing for relatively cheap aerial drones to understand where they are (via GPS) and respect no-fly zones. If that’s viable for a $400 drone, then forget governing ebike motor speeds, make $15,000 cars understand where they are and not exceed posted speed limits, to reduce property damage, injury, and death caused by collisions with 3000 pound autos. And reduce pollution and carbon footprint, too.
Oh, wait, that’s politically impossible.
Let’s get back to picking on the tiny niche (ebikes) within the tiny niche (cyclists).
