ParticipantMisuse of the g-ride (making an assumption your buddy was a fed) = time on the beach. That would be without pay.
Pretty darn sure that every federal agency with 1811s has orders in place regarding use of the emergency lights.
I’d encourage anyone who witnesses any sort of misuse of an official vehicle to report it. And those “official police business” dash placards? They are not an excuse to park illegally for routine matters just because it is inconvenient to park legally and voucher the cost. They are, however, an excellent way to identify which internal affairs or IG office to contact.
Think of it like the broken window theory. These sorts of lower-level abuses create a culture that eventually leads to much more newsworthy behaviors.OneEighth
ParticipantTuesday. Red fixie. Nice ride and good conversation with a bid dude who kept me honest from George Mason until Buchanan. Excellent.
Wednesday. Cheater bike. Lotsa raging at NDMFs going sub-55 in the passing lane on I-66. Bogus.
Thursday. Red Fixie. Drafted by short chica who kept me honest all the way from George Mason to the Custis/W&OD and said “thanks for the draft” when I peeled off. Excellent.
Friday…Really, really want to ride the red fixie again…anything on the path, really…OneEighth
ParticipantPretty sure I saw a guy headed southbound on the W&OD trying to find his way back to the Ukraine…
Meant to say hi but was not dialed in enough.OneEighth

“pedaling backwards no longer stops the bike”
It does on my going-to-market single speed.

This doesn’t surprise me at all unfortunately. Since the weather turned warmer, I’ve seen the trails far busier and some people cycling on them are jerks. Threading the needle and passing around blind corners are common habits of these people. This is why I usually hug the center line on the MVT. It usually dissuades the impatient from trying to pull dangerous passes.
Do you do this at all times or only when you are approaching a situation where you want to discourage passing?

She lost me with this:
Had she done some research, she’d have learned that an overwhelming proportion of motorcycle crashes involve alcohol, speeding, and overall reckless behavior.
Wait…this is problem?

I had another creepy encounter on 16th St. this morning near Virginia Hospital Center. My prior two issues on that stretch involved drivers going the opposite direction and swerving into the ambulance tracks in the speed humps right in front of me. Pure stupidity (oblivious drivers looking only for cars) but terrifying nonetheless.
Today’s episode was different. I was riding eastward in a slow, congested string of cars heading toward Glebe Road. I had taken the lane, keeping near the bumper of the car ahead, when all of a sudden the car behind me guns it into the left (oncoming) lane and then forces their way in front of me… I had to stop to let them in so I would not crash. I yelled and gave them the birdie, repeating loudly, “who ARE you?!” There was no place the car could go – they were literally inches from the car in front – and they started driving with their wheel against the right curb to make sure I wouldn’t pass. It was weird… I kept asking myself, why are they behaving this way? Clearly they did not like driving behind a petite bicycle rider in flowery skirt and big yellow backpack, but their alternative was simply to hug the bumper of another car. It did not leave me scared so much as sad that such ill-tempered people exist in this world.
If you got the tag and other identifying info, you might want to call this one in.

ParticipantI whistle Christmas tunes at them. Most of them seem to get my meaning and move beyond reach.

ParticipantBoth, but easily more men than wonen.

ParticipantFWIW, I think the trails have become much less pleasant than they were a few years ago. I really noticed it when I took a break from bicycling and pretty much motorcycled everywhere from October through mid-March. When I started commuting by bicycle again, I realized that I was exposed to more in-you-face stupidity/aggression on the path than when I was commuting on the motorcycle.
Not sure what is driving the behavior I see. Perhaps the fact that you are the engine makes the whole thing more personal and the competitiveness turns into aggression. Perhaps people don’t feel as bound by formal rules of the road when on a bicycle and that bleeds over into feeling that the usual rules and consequences don’t apply to their behavior. Dunno—I just know that it’s not cool when it’s more relaxing to play in traffic on a motorcycle than to ride on the path.
So, a big thank you to all of you who make the ride decent. Really appreciate it.OneEighth
ParticipantBetcha no hands on the handlebars gets ya a reckless riding ticket.

ParticipantI suspect every fixie rider (who cleans his/her chain) has punctured a thumb nail.

ParticipantHell, Arlington signals can’t even detect motorcycles. And reporting it to the County has been almost as useful as pissing into the wind.

ParticipantMy two cents.
Yes, I think you should report it and create a record. You may even want to post the photos here so other folks are forewarned.
But—and this is not meant as a criticism—I think the best thing one can do when faced with this type of aggression is 1) take a photo of the offender, vehicle, and plate and 2) immediately dial 911 and report the attempted assault in progress. After the fact more than likely just gets filed away.OneEighth

The reality is that a lot of people are just really stupid, and society happily gives them drivers licenses anyway. :p
