ParticipantI would specifically recommend SOLAS tape (Safety of Life at Sea). Designed to work very well in wet conditions.

ParticipantThorough wipe down with WD40 and rubbing alcohol (brakes, front rim, etc). Clean each link of the chain with a rag and then wax. Given the soaking, I may very well remove, clean, and repack the bottom bracket, too.

ParticipantBefore we get too off topic, what can be done to get rid of stop signs and stop lines at intersections that have a walk/ride signal? Think about it. You don’t see stop signs and traffic lights together at intersections on the road. It doesn’t make any sense.

ParticipantYeah, there is some seriously questionable judgement here and is, frankly, a very bad precedent with serious implications for everyone who uses the trail.

ParticipantAs I understood it, the cyclist here crossed with the walk signal and was still ticketed for failing to stop before crossing. This is a similar set-up to what you see on the W&OD where there are stop signs at intersections that also have walk signals.

ParticipantI would settle for NPS just having some consistency. I very specifically warned them about the dangers posed by painting the boardwalks. I am certain I was not the only one. And yet, NPS is now painting them again.
Frankly this points to an internal control problem that ultimately should be reflected in someone’s performance evaluation.OneEighth

FYI–on that run in to St. Michael’s, Mark and I were averaging 26-28mph.
Has Pete told you about Kill Bill v.6 later this summer? You might want to bring a bike with gears to that one…
There’s a definite upper limit to a fixie on a flat.
Hills, however, can be loads of fun—you get beat up going up and coming down. I think Kill Bill is probably a bit steep, but a fixed gear hill ride through North Arlington would be interesting.
I’ve got a geared bike somewhere…OneEighth
ParticipantIt was a sweet ride. I even sorta enjoyed grinding out the last few miles on the flat, though I do feel bad about killing Tim’s average speed…
I may have to re-gear or take the Specialized next time just so I’m not spinning at 120.
Thanks again.August 18, 2011 at 11:53 am in reply to: DC people- What’s the deal with riding in bike lanes against traffic #929342OneEighth
ParticipantYou see quite a bit of salmoning on the one-way section of the Hains Point loop, too. There I suspect it has something to do with people not wanting to get passed because reality tends to spoil an otherwise Fredtastic morning.
Everywhere else I figure it’s either laziness or stupidity.OneEighth
ParticipantDo you know if the tubes are getting holed in the same place? That would help you pinpoint where to look on the inside of your tire to find the sliver of whatever that has probably poked through and is causing your flats.
You can also run your thumb around the inside of the tire. Might get knicked, though.
Just in case—are you making sure that the replacement tubes are completely inside the tire and not caught between bead and rim?
Good luck.OneEighth

ParticipantRather fortuitous that this thread popped back up. I use a Stella and was pleased with it until yesterday morning when it started turning itself off despite having a fresh charge and not being run on high. That’s less than one year’s life. I just can’t recommend them after that. Nothing worse than playing in traffic at 0-dark-thirty and having no light up front.

ParticipantComing on so quickly on the heels of the last accident on the Parkway, this is a good opportunity to really make the point with your Member of Congress (or to remind them if you wrote after the first incident).
Squeaky wheels and whatnot.
And, pfunkallstar, thanks for doing the right thing. It’s a shame about the other riders, but cold weather isn’t far off…OneEighth
ParticipantO Hill (behind the new dorms and the Slaughter Rec Center) offers some lovely mtb riding.
For road riding, head out towards Foxfield and over through Free Union. http://maps.google.com/maps?hl=en&tab=wlAugust 16, 2011 at 5:26 pm in reply to: What would you yell when a car or truck cuts in your lane? #929276OneEighth
