Are those equestrian goggles or lab goggles? Where did you get them?

ParticipantIt was cold enough this morning that I tried my new goggles (like these):
Verdict: they are probably even more ridiculous looking than ski goggles, but they have much better peripheral vision. I still had a terrible problem with them fogging up, but it had more to do with my glasses underneath the goggles than the goggles themselves. Once I stopped at Java Shack to put in contacts, everything was better. I will still be on the lookout for the perfect solution for protecting my eyes on the coldest days.

ParticipantThis article eerily foreshadows the tragedy that occurred Monday in front of Nottingham Elementary: http://www.arlnow.com/2014/02/24/breaking-woman-struck-by-dump-truck/
I’d say the answer to the question posed by the title is “no.”

ParticipantSince I travel through regularly, I definitely agree that:
-bikes need to be separate from the parking lot. Any situation where cars are backing up into a bike lane is a recipe for disaster.
-the 90 degree turn is problematic. Mainly because the majority of cyclists don’t want to slow down enough to make the turn, so they go through the parking lot (see above). Also, signage is poor, and in the dark, I could imagine someone going straight into the river after going across the crosswalk from west to east if they were unfamiliar with the area.
-So, I would support both alternatives 1 and 2. In addition to cost considerations, it would also be good to know how long the upgrades will take. Is there one alternative that takes more time (and therefore more disruptions to trail users passing through there) than the other?oldbikechick

I wasn’t successful, for reasons described below. I think the fact the lights are still there is like a function of the other workload of the staff.
I learned that the flashing lights were on loan from a vendor for the test period and have to be returned. I am hoping at the conclusion of the environmental assessment, a decision to purchase those or similar lights will be made and we will have flashing lights to help us across that crosswalk.
Thanks for following up with them and letting us know. I’m sure your advocacy is a huge help in pushing this in the right direction.

ParticipantI take it as a good sign that the lights are still there. Thanks dbb!

ParticipantI think I had a Dirt sighting and short conversation this morning on Washington Boulevard. I wasn’t completely sure though and thought it might be a bit awkward if I said “hey, are you dirt?” or “you must be dirt” if, in fact it wasn’t Dirt from this forum. Anyway, it was nice chatting and as I worked my way across the horrible intersection of Washington Blvd and Wilson/Fairfax/Clarendon Blvd, I had to wonder if you had a better route and I should have followed you.

MVT 14th St Bridge to Roosevelt this evening:

Damn!
Yes, it was a surprisingly windy evening commute! I was feeling good being on the trail for the first time since the snow, but was glad it was still daylight when I did the section of the Custis between Lee Hwy and the Spout Run overpass which still had a lot of ice. Think I’ll be riding on roads again tomorrow morning since I don’t suppose it will melt much tonight. Although those stoplights on the road sure are pesky. Now that I’m recording everything for freezing saddles, I discovered that my on-road commute is one mile shorter than the on-trail commute, but takes the same amount of time.

ParticipantThis makes me very sad. Those lights were great and really seemed to work well. Why not leave them there while they decide what to do? I guess I will be adjusting my commute again to avoid that crossing.

Thanks. Looks like I’ll need to wait it out until next week. Sorry, slacker team!
The weather was so nice and the street and sidewalk from the office window looked so clean and dry that I couldn’t resist. I got a CaBi and went down the mall and across the bridge anyway, in hopes that maybe the MVT would be ride-able at least. I checked it out from the bridge and it looked pretty bad, plus the few patches of snowy slush I went over with the CaBi demonstrated my limitations. So, I went to the 110 trail with visions of a long and slushy walk pushing the bike through the snow when wonder of wonders, the trail had been plowed! It was a beautiful evening to ride and I’m so glad I got to do it. I will be sending thank you notes to the great list that Arlingtonrider compiled.

ParticipantHas anyone ridden from Rosslyn over the memorial bridge via Netherlands Carrillon and the little trail by 110? Doable with a CaBi by this evening? By a normal person in work clothes?

These are awesome, I love ebikes and I’m really happy we have them, but really? The Americans would have ebikes!
I know! But, really, they are for employees to go back and forth to meetings, etc and the mission is at the top of a hill decent sized hill… I think ebikes are probably the right tool for this purpose
oldbikechick
ParticipantWe have them too! I was in Geneva recently and saw these:
