ParticipantI’m planning to come and wondering about the pace/which bike to ride. Locking up @zoo makes me think hybrid, because it’s SO much less of a theft magnet – but it’s slower. On the other hand maybe some people will bring families and its a no drop ride and 10-12 mph will be fine…. Any thoughts, Judd…? Sorry I didn’t think of this earlier….

That narrows it down to about 80% of all cyclists.
Lol nah, most female cyclists don’t look like that 😅
Judd, thanks for pointing me at these rides. I’d love to come. I’ll probly hafta wait for the 2nd (because conflict.)Have you already been finding cool lights to share in these places?

I’ll be there, too!
I’m planning to come too. I’m out of town, so will be coming from upstate NY. I’d love to get back to town in time to get home and come in by bike, but that’s unlikely given the 6 hr drive, my not being a morning person, traffic, and the fact that I already got a speeding ticket (my first) on the way here…
Soooo… I hope the nuclear event street closures in DC don’t mean less parking available on water Street, but I guess they might.
Looking forward to the gathering, though!

I’m calling this: Friday starting at 5:00 at Clare and Don’s in Falls Church. It’s easy to get to off the W&OD in Falls Church and they have a good beach menu. Bike parking is slightly non-existent, but I’ve never actually had a problem. Beach cruisers are not required.
Friends and family are welcome, as are other teams (but could be subject to trash talk)!
I’m so bummed. The meet-up was at exactly the right time for me and I was really interested, but I just can’t get it on my radar to check here….. So I found out I’d missed it when I saw Nick’s strava comment….

Hey Salty Dogs – any interest in a happy hour or meet up this weekend? Friday or Saturday evening? I was thinking Clare and Don’s in Falls Church might be a good location for our bunch.
Well you sure got my number given the menu on your venue…. I vote for that place, though it looks like no alcohol. I think I’m free most of Saturday, except for hanging with my husband and riding my bike. Saturday late afternoon or evening work best for me, but I’d try to make it so Robynne can make it too.

I believe this would also be a legitimate use of the main “2016 Freezing Saddles” Strava club. You only need to be an administrator to post an announcement. Anyone should be able to post in the discussion area.
How would I post anything to that strava club? All I can see that it does is to show the data on everyone’s rides.
I’m getting very frustrated about this. I have been directed to THIS thread as a place to post rides, but there is not a single ride posted here. I’m not talking about big event rides – I’m talking about a place to post a ride for tomorrow, or this afternoon. A place to say something like
“Hey it looks like it’s gonna be nice out this weekend. Anyone wanna join me for a ride starting at 2 pm at the intersection of the Custis & W&OD trails?”
Is this thread that place? Because it sure doesn’t look like it to me.
Boomer linked to another thread, but the title of that thread is about a specific ride that already happened – so I’m thinking that’s not a good idea either.
I was gonna start a new thread, but was redirected here. But I’m sure nobody’s looking for rides here (are they?) and I can’t see a way to pay anything to the strava club.Nadine
ParticipantThis picture was taken a year or more ago, right? You don’t have snow on the ground in MD yet… Do you?

The signs from the MVT lead you down a short path to the parking area in the back of the daily parking garage – first pic below. There are also some bike racks at the ground level of the Metro station (second pic below), but they’re a bit hard to find if you don’t know what you’re looking for.
Can you help me find this bike parking lot? I think it’s the one in your first picture I’m looking for. It’s bike parking lot #6 in photo, which shows it right next to the parking lot for terminal C. http://www.flyreagan.com/sites/default/files/dca_bike_racks_0.pdf
I was there today (by car.) I went to where it looked like it was, on the photo, and nothing. Trees. If I had come by bike I would have ended up locking it to a pole — which I’m sure would be frowned upon. I was just meeting a friend for breakfast who had a 2 hour layover at the right time — but I’d love to be able to go by bike, both to meet a friend for breakfast and to fly out of town for the weekend. I’m sure the bike ride would make the plane travel so much better — and I’d have a ride home on the way back! But the idea of having to scramble to find the parking lot is a deal breaker.
I’ve looked at pictures, but none show the bike parking lots in enough context that I might be able to find them. I see assurances that if I come from the trail it will be obvious — so I’ll try to make time to detour there sometime when I’m on the trail. However, it seems like the kind of thing I ought to be able to find out via computer. Any help would be appreciated!!!

The thumbs up thing seems to be a glitch in your computer. It works for me on my computer, on the browser on my phone, and on Tapatalk on my phone.
As to people’s names, you really just have to ask them. We thought about doing a chart to link forum names and Strava names, but decided there were too many privacy concerns.
Hey thanks. You are right – I can thumbs up from my phone! Always glad when the computer issue is the computer’s rather than mine… 😆

A recently-added teammate for the Salty Dogs is the short answer. Long answer is a semi-active poster on here for a couple years. Folks on here helped me go from someone whom had ridden bikes, but never commuted to someone primarily commuting by bike. Teammate wise, I’ve met Kathy once before at a REI bike maintenance thing and maybe a few other folks at the happy hour two years ago for BAFS. I think this will be my third year.
Cool…. Would you mind sharing a name, & however strava knows you? That’ll help me connect what you say here with your physical self & rides recorded. 😆

Hi – I’m Kathleen and met some of you at the happy hour in G’town. I bike from Falls Church to Tysons most days. I’m the cyclist going west in the morning around 8:00 or so and then East around 6:30? There aren’t too many of us so say hi and make a friend! I’m also part of Team D-Rock, which is a very select team that likes to ride for beer and go to pancakes. You can find me most Mondays at MMP(ancake)C(club) and I dream of making the Vienna Thursday club, but it’s just so early!
I’ve got a Salsa Vaya with red handlebar tape, and I’m rockin’ a rack and fenders.
I am not available for the beer ride this Saturday.
Team D-Rock has another engagement in Georgetown involving coffee. I’m usually available for rides on the weekends, but life has been hectic lately. Kid1 might be passing algebra now though, so time might be freed up. Kid2 is destined for a disaster now, right?
Is anyone interested in a Facebook page? Would that make this easier or harder?
Hey thanks for the help. I woulda thumbsed up your replies, but… yeah.
OK so now I think I know who four of you are (reji I also met at the bar in G-town, right?) Terpfan, who are you? Anyone else wanna help me with a little decoding? Yeah I completely agree about not linking with Strava — I was pretty blown away with how Strava knew stuff about me I didn’t know myself….Nadine

ParticipantOh wait, I see the reply button now. Still would love to know people’s names and how to thumbs up though!

This Saturday at 10:45 Port City Brewery is having its Pedals ‘N’ Pints short ride. It is a very mellow 10 mile ride from the brewery and back, followed by the option of having beer and food from a food truck. I can lead a ride from the caboose on the W&OD in Bluemont, from there it is an about 7 mile/40 minute ride. Some of the route is on Walter Reed and Braddock Rd, so comfort riding with traffic is needed. I’d leave at 9:50 sharp. If you’d rather not ride there, you can drive to the brewery and meet up there. Please let me know if you are interested. Note that the route is not 100% smooth, so commuter/cross/hybrid bikes are best. You can get more info on the ride here:http://www.portcitybrewing.com/events/pedals-n-pints-the-short-ride-january/
Capt’n Steve
Thanks for organizing this, Cap’n Steve! I have a conflict on Sat am, so am gonna wait to decide which one to do til tomorrow night. I might meet a friend for breakfast at the airport (he’s passing through with just time for breakfast
) and then go on to the brewery. I’d miss the ride but I’d arrive in time to have a beer with you guys and ride back. Would that make sense, do you think? How long are people likely to stay for a beer and a bite? I should be able to get there by 12:15-12:30.
Also, if anyone has used bike parking at the airport, please lmk. I’d be looking for the lockup near terminal C, but this map is not very detailed…. http://www.flyreagan.com/sites/default/files/dca_bike_racks_0.pdf.
I’m afraid I’m having a learning curve about using this forum. First, I don’t know who anyone is by their username except Steve, whose name is clear (though I know some of you on Strava, and from the night in G-town — but which are you, here?) I haven’t figured out how to “like” a post. (I see the thumb, but when I click on it, my vote is not added in,) and finally, I can’t see how to reply without a quote. (That’s the least of it, though.)

Since we now have 20 teams, it’s pretty hard for everyone to eavesdrop on everyone else’s thread, as fun as that might be.
So if you are going to have a ride or an event that is open to all FS participants, please post it here, too. Or start an event specific thread with a salient title, like Boomer did with his hill ride.
We could also use the calendar, although methinks it is not often looked at.
I’d love to have rides that are open to all FS members — that would increase the chances of finding someone with a compatible riding pace, schedule, interest, location (to some extent), etc. However — do you think people will check here enough that it will work to post rides here? Has this been tried before? How far in advance would you say rides need to be posted in order to get takers, and would another forum be recommended in addition to this one? I’m wary of posting rides too far in advance in the winter, because of weather fluctuations….
Also I’m not sure how often people check here…. Maybe it would be good to post rides to other places additionally. Might Strava have something to offer in this regard? It collects enough data on us that it seems like some might be useful for arranging ride get togethers….

What is wrong with you people!!!
Salty dogs is fine with me too, hahaha. And Steve O, where do you live? I’m in Dominion Hills too….
Also — are there rides posted here? I saw a mention of a “this morning’s ride”. I’m about to go out on my own, couldn’t get anyone but am not missing this day. But are there rides here that I’m missing? Another forum? Thanks.
