I might be especially touchy about BMI because a stupid pediatrician, in front of my then 5 year old daughter, told me that her BMI was high and she should watch what she ate. She was 90th percentile height and she has a solid athletic build. I still regret not saying anything then – I think I was too shocked for it even to sink in how many ways the doctor was wrong.
Anyway, BMI at the individual level is bullhonkey. Doctors should find another way to talk to patients.
Ooooh did you ever tell your daughter about your disagreement & all the good reasons for it? Your opinion will matter to her a lot.

I really considered that but if I actually do end up meeting my weight loss goals I’d be in the same predicament haha.
Yeah you’re right about this. Isn’t there some kinda horse that’s strong and sturdy and not necessarily carrying extra, but just able to? (Feel like I’m describing the Rod Smith of horses [emoji38])

Good luck with your goals. I was already well down from obese before getting into biking, but got down from overweight (or was it just below overweight, I forget?) to right in the middle of “normal” and perhaps more importantly, got all my cholesterol numbers down where they needed to be (and lowered my blood sugar too, despite all those coffee club muffins and cookies. Not saying it works for everyone, but the potential for gains is quite real.
Lordofthemark, I would NEVER have guessed you’d ever been anything other than slim. Hats off to you!

Back in July of last year, I started commuting by bike for health reasons, I was (still am, but less so now) fat. I started with an e-bike but in April of this year I moved on to a non-assisted bike. I used an old xcross bike for a month while I convinced myself (and my wife) that I was strong enough to commute both ways 5 days a week in a reasonable timeframe to meet parental and work responsibilities and then had a NBD on the first day of Bike to Work week. I’ve since put about 2k miles on that new bike. In a moment of personal accomplishment, I got called a Clydesdale by a strava user a couple weeks ago after leading a peloton of riders from Columbia Pike to the 14st bridge. It made me feel much more giddy than is probably reasonable.
So do you think I should change my name? I lurk more than I post so I’m not losing a lot of post history or anything. When I started, I honestly thought I would forever be needing the assist of an ebike for my commute (close to 40 miles RT) so it seemed like a good moniker. It’s not that I’m ashamed of having ridden an ebike either, I will forever be a vocal proponent for them given my own experience and their ability to help someone completely sedentary make positive changes in their health. But at the same time, it no longer reflects me and always causes questions when I give my forum name which leads to this explanation every time. So it makes me think I should retire it. So, what would you do? Would you keep it or move on?
How about Clydesdale?
Making you giddy is quite a recommendation! [emoji16]Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

My only regret about this ride – besides it raining every year- is that it conflicts with Reji’s ride that looks really really fun… whomp whomp.
What’s Reji’s ride? Do you have a link? I have a hard time finding stuff here…. And I missed signing up for the 50 states ride because I’ve had this gut problem & have been playing it by ear.

As far as I know, just the two. (I say that since there’s always a chance I pre-ordered or backed something that’ll show up and surprise me.)
To hijack this thread even more: which Kickstarter device did you get? I have a SmartHalo on my bike as well, mostly for the motion sensor based alarm, though it does navigation as well.
Lastly: yes, I meant Garmin (since I’ve never owned or used one, I can’t say how the Wahoo devices compare…but I do like the Wahoo devices)
Smart halo, yes! Do you like it?
And you did mean Garmin…. OK. I think I’m more interested in a wahoo, ultimately.Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I’ve never had a Garmin, so am not in either the “swear by them” or “swear at them” camps. With that in mind, I think either the Elemnt or Elemnt Bolt are excellent choices; the Bolt is smaller (so smaller screen, and smaller price), but otherwise they both function identically. There’s also the Elemnt Mini – that just serves as a screen paired to your phone, and it relies on your phone for its GPS (so does not make sense for what you’re looking for, I’d think).
If you’re more concerned with recording your ride and less with navigation, another good/cost effective choice is the range of GPS units from Lezyne. I’ve an “old” (as in I got it December 2016) Lezyne Super GPS I’d be happy to let you borrow to try out/save it from gathering dust. (I went from that to the Elemnt for the bigger screen/better navigation features.)
That’s sweet. Also funny. How many “old” bike computers do you have to loan out really? You’re like the bike computer fairy ….[emoji38] also awesome, as JRenaut said.
I actually have a kickstarter device that’s supposed to do navigation. I need to install it on the bike – which I’ve put off, as it means removing the hardware that attaches my handlebar bag. But I have a bigger under the seat bag now so maybe I can make the switch. I might regret it in winter (when I will probably want more spare dry layers) but I’ll hafta figure something else out – the handlebar bag catches too much wind resistance anyhow.
So though I do need navigation, I *should* have it.
Lastly …. When you said Garmin at the beginning of your message, that was just a brain fart, right? You meant to say Wahoo?

ParticipantOK so I’ve been needing a new bike computer for 2 years – I let it go this long because Stravaing on my phone was working fine (just bought a remote battery & carry on the bike at all times.) It’s been stopping my rides mid ride recently though – 4x in the last 3 rides!
The first time it had actually logged the ride…. I was on a break, and checked it before getting back on the bike, expecting to see “auto -pause” and instead I got the new ride record screen…. I was so relieved it hadn’t lost the ride!
Anyhow i hope it’s OK to sidetrack a thread now that Jon’s issue is resolved (for his trip at least…)
I’m getting a clear sense from this thread that people recommend the Wahoo Element Bolt. Is that correct?

For tomorrow, July 27, a special guest.
Providing it’s not rained out, Jimmy Ashby, who is staying with me via Warm Showers, will be at the fountain with me. He is a 19-year old Australian who is bicycling around the world. Check out his website here. I’m sure he will have some interesting stories to tell.Cool Steve! I’m planning to come. Though it looks like it might wrap up on the early side…. At this point I’m betting the rain won’t start before 7/7:30.
Except now that I actually wrote it down I might get smote…. [emoji16]
