ParticipantJeeez Jon I’m so sorry to hear this. And what a TROUPER your awesome daughter is! I hope your Achilles heals with no pain. Your daughter sounds like she don’t need no stinkin’ well wishes, but she’s got mine anyhow. And probably my vote, if she ever decides to run for anything I can vote for!
Don’t worry about freezing Saddles. We love you guys anyhow. You might just hafta wait to ride til is nicer out…..

Deep inside a winter’s night
An alarm clock screams with all its might
The sun’s not up and the wind is howling
Like a grizzly’s roar or a tiger’s growlingYou want to roll over and stay in bed
But a voice says, “Go!” inside your head
Snow is falling and the window rattles
Yes, another day of Freezing Saddles! You slowly pull the curtain aside
It may be freezing, but it’s time to ride
Outside is many a wintry mile
Across your face spreads a thin wry smileOn with the base layers; on with the Gortex;
Gloves and booties for the Polar Vortex
Blinkies are lit and the headlight’s aglow
It’s time to head out in to the snow!Black ice or powder, it matters not
Because you’ll give it all you’ve got
Knobbies or studs on front and back
On wooden bridges you find your trackPeddling o’er Brandymore; o’er ruts of death
Clouds of steam with every breath
Up the shivering Sisters you climb
Ahead is the horror of icy TrollheimSo you take to the streets and leave the trail
But here it’s just another tale.
Speeding cars all in a rush
Are splashing salt and slinging slush!Just when you think you’re going berserk
You finally make it into work
Querulous coworkers cast a jaundiced eye
As their kitted office mate walks byBacked up work’s on your desk in piles
‘Cause at lunch you rode those extra miles
Turn off the computer; lay down the pen
‘Cause now it’s time to head out again. It’s still as cold as a witch’s ……nose
Soon you’ll have those frozen toes
The winter sun is a low red arc
And now you’re riding in the dark
II
“Why do you do it?” friends want to know
It’s cold, it’s dark; and there’s so much snow!
“Why don’t you drive or take a bus?”
“Why aren’t you like the rest of us?”Sometimes you ask yourself the same
Who is it here that is to blame?
Is it the challenge; or the thrill of a quest?
Or teammates for whom you do your best? What is the answer? You search your heart,
What is it exactly that sets you apart?
Words can’t do justice; why even try?
How will others ever understand why? It’s making the first tracks on new fallen snow
It’s the thrill of going where few choose to go
It’s excitement and danger that fills a need
It’s your beating heart when you pick up speedIt’s the rhythm of your pedals, thighs and knees
It’s the full day ride and the lunchtime sleaze
It’s the joy in your lungs of cold crisp air
It’s the awesome silence that feels like a prayerIt’s the beauty of the sunlit snow
It’s the thrilling challenge that makes you go
It’s a pledge that goes on and on for weeks
It’s the permanent glow upon your cheeksIt’s beating your best on every ride
It’s the roaring fire that burns inside
It’s the frozen night where bright stars soar
How can you tell them all this and more? Now, everyone’s leaning forward to hear
Why do you do this every year?
So you tell them the answer from deep inside,
Saying simply, “I’m a rider and I like to ride.”So, when winter serves up its icy dish
And warm fingers and toes are but a wish
You forget the pain and open your eyes
All around you is the ultimate prize!Dave Pomeroy

[h=2]BAFS 2019 Strava Art Group Ride–Leviathan![/h]
All are invited (of course, Team 16: SLEET 16s) to join in a fun Strava art ride in Arlington on Sunday, Mar 10th. Meet 915 AM at Best Buns in Shirlington, for coffee/snack, if desired before the ride. Wheels rolling from Shirlington at 10 AM. Drawing start and end is at at the intersection of W&OD and Carlin Springs Rd. You can meet us there at ~10:20 AM and complete the 12-mile art ride in about an hour’s time. No drop; average speed 9-12 mph. There are a few techniques I can show you about doing Strava Art, we will have to cross a couple of parks, a staircase, and a sidewalk for a stretch along a one-way street. Whether you are an experienced Strava artist or a newbie, it will be fun for all. After, if we’re hungry for lunch, we can ride to Ballston for lots of possibilities.SUMMARY

Pretty sure it’s around mile 1.8, heading up the stairs from Lee Highway to N Scott St. Here’s some people headed down those stairs during komorebi’s Arlington bike lane ride. Your option to avoid the stairs would be continuing along Lee Highway, climbing N Quinn, making a right on N Scott, and then regrouping.

Looking forward to today’s ride, Komorebi! I’ll be arriving with Anne. I love your rides.
I did have a moment’s hesitation about the issues of carrying my bike up / down stairs, but then I saw Josh’s picture here, and since clearly I did fine with these stairs on your all -bike-lanes-in-Arlington ride… [emoji38] I’m thinking I’ll be fine with them again today…. [emoji16]

How do you make it work? Mine isn’t right – it doesn’t show anything on the Arlington loop and the w&od, and I’m not the only one who has hardly been off of those! Also it doesn’t move. Am I supposed to do something after the link pops up?

Nvm I figured it out. Also I bet it looks better on a computer screen than my phone

I’ve got to get my sorry arse into the office tomorrow and my commute is Custis from North Glebe to just before the intersection of doom. Does anyone have info on trail condition ice wise? My ankle is at 92% healed and I need to keep it that way. I’ll ride road if I hafta, any beta on the trail is GREATLY appreciated! Thank you very much in advance. Elizabeth I Like Wheels, FS2019 Team 8 is Great.
Hey Elizabeth! I just ride the Arlington loop this pm, and to my surprise the Custis is the only trail of the three with NO ICE PATCHES!
The whole thing, btw – not just the part you mentioned. And it’s cold enough now that no fear of it thawing and freezing into black ice.

Correction.
claudia is NOT on Misfit Toys. I accidentally assigned her even though she’s already on another team (my team, no less!) Need to fire the guy in charge of teams!
Instead, bbaker89 is now on Misfit Toys.
Also Boomer was telling me he was going to be on this team …. I don’t know his forum name (probably Boomer?[emoji848]) but none of the team member names look likely….
