    3/3/21 – train

Well I have my favorite pic of the metro train coming towards me, taken from the Patrick Henry overpass…. But there are other pix of metro trains here, and none of the Bluemont Caboose, which I thought was my backup plan….. Also Accordioneur was just leaving the custis overpass when I was arriving [emoji38] so I’m sure his pic will be along shortly….

But I like the moving pic better have the still museum piece train so…. This is my favorite. Taken from the Patrick Henry Overpass on my way back from the Custis overpass [emoji16] (The others are on my Strava ride from today of anyone wants to see….)

    3/2/21 – little free library

I went on a reading party ride today with HokieBeth and Cathy…. We decided to find a different little free library for each of us. Mine (here) is right by Fort Hunt on Winthrop street.

We had a great time with this one. Cathy & I ended up stuffing books in our bags to take home, all on Beth’s recommendations.

Besides the rad reading party ride, this was a nice one for me because…. My mom died 6 years ago yesterday, on her 74th birthday. She wouldabin 80 yesterday. My mom was an English professor. She LOVED to read. I learned to read when I was 4 because she was single parenting while she was a grad student, so reading was the THING at my house. When I was older I’d go raid her bookcase. She’d had it custom made to fit the entire wall of her bedroom, floor to ceiling. One side was American writers & the other British. (I can’t remember if she put writers from other countries in another bookcase or just snuck ’em in with the American & British writers.)

Thanks for helping me remember some of the good times with my mom, Drevil, Hokiebeth, & Cathy [emoji3531]

    3/1/21 – pig!

This place has all 3 – a pig likeness, the word pig, and they serve pork. It’s a li’l fancy priced but it’s REALLY good. Now I wanna go again. One day [emoji2358][emoji1744]

Good thing Drevil doesn’t dock points for lack of originality. I knew last night when I saw what today’s challenge was that I was gonna go here – but Cate got here first [emoji16][emoji1744]

    2/29/21 – mattress

Omg none of my mattress pictures are legible. And it’s my own fault because I got the BIKE in all the pix, & took em from across the STREET…… so the camera focused on the BIKE. And it was raining & I didn’t wanna keep Anne waiting so I didn’t check, just took 4 and off we went [emoji33] I hope this counts!

Is the MattressFirm store on Lee highway at Harrison in Arlington…. Trust me, all the other pix are worse [emoji2358]

Nadine, I was going with a theme – not only did I walk through the whole word with three letter acronyms, but they all related to my simulation work in 90’s. Fortunately, I have no personal conection to your definition of STI.

I know [emoji16] I enjoyed your work related acronyms all throughout that one long word. It just made me smile that my work history had such a completely different meaning associated with that acronym.

2/27/21 – the words black or white (or better yet, both) in any language

I went to the Hall’s Hill Wall in Arlington. Some of the wall is still there behind the sign. It’s visible in the pano on my Strava post today – but I used the closer pic for this to make sure the words are legible. Except somehow they’re kinda blurry, here. [emoji848][emoji1744]

The beginning of the sign reads:

This wall is a reminder of racial segregado if the historically African American community of Hall’s Hill. During constructing of the Woodland subdivision in the 1930s, a wall of various materials and heights was built here to separate the BLACKs from the adjacent WHITE neighborhood…..

(I can’t figure out how to do BOLD here so using CAPs instead.)
Glad to see I’m not the only one who went for a racial equality pic for today’s photo. [emoji3590][emoji1377][emoji1434][emoji1548]

After an interminable Saturday meeting, broke free at 3 and rode to Reston Town Center to take an insurance photo of the same clothing store that others have. That done, I started exploring. I remembered a yard sign that had one of the words and I was hoping it would have an additional sign to complete the pair. No joy, so I rode back to Lake Anne, Reston’s historic center and peeked into the used book shop. SCORE! Couldn’t bring my bike in (there’s barely room enough for people in there), but was able to get this photo … only to realize it’s sideways. Ah well, the words are clear. Thanks drevil for stretching my brain a bit.

That’s a great book – I read it after I saw/heard James McBride speak at the national book festival. Nice find for today’s photo.

2/26/21 – Acronym or Initialism (3 letters or more)

    DISTILLERS:

DIS: Distributed Interactive Simulation – A military simulation technology for connecting remote simulations together to form large exercises. We were in essence inventing Internet gaming – I even had some articles on how to synchronize multiple players over the Internet published in Game Developer Magazine back in the 90’s

IST: The Institute for Simulation and training. The Army funded a lot of the DIS work out of Orlando. The University of Central Florida set up IST, an academic research center to support simulation research.

STI: Stanford Telecommunications, Inc. A firm I worked with back in those early days.

TIL: Today I Learned that STI went out of business a long time ago.

ILL: Internet Leased Lines. Back in those days, plain vanilla Internet connections weren’t fast enough for realtime simulation, so we used leased T1 lines.

LLE: Low Level Emulation. One of the first simulations I wrote was in the Lisp language on the Symbolics computer. Later, it was possible to emulate a Symbolics on a Mac and we ported the simulation over to that platform. The original MacIvory was a hardware board that you added to the Mac, so only partial emulation.

LER: Learning Environments Research. IST did a lot of research in how to build synthetic environments that best support learning.

ERS: Economic Research Service. I’m pretty sure we pitched this organization that they should be using (our) simulation technology to improve their analyses. Never got a contract out of it.

STI also stands for sexually transmitted infection. That’s what it meant in MY former life. [emoji16] (I was an AIDS/Health educator 88-03.)

    2/26/21 – acronyms

I found a number of acronyms on my ride, including some unintentional ones (took me a minute to understand that part of the instructions – whoopsie [emoji4])

I found VIN, ART, NOVA, WOD, W&OD (same trail, different acronym [emoji1744],) and NVRPA. I went for the double acronym of the last 2 on the sign with the map of the Arlington loop at the intersection of the Custis and the W&OD – though it’s weathered and hard to read despite my attempts to clean it for the picture.

Here: WOD: Washington & Old Dominion. (trail) and NVRPA: Northern VirginiA Regional Parks Authority

This one is a twofer: BCCRS (Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad) and CFC (Combined Federal Campaign).

I started out thinking I was going to Keep It Simple Stupid, with a picture of a Kiss & Ride sign. But on the way home, I kept finding more acronyms and initialisms everywhere. There were:

    • HSBC=Hongkong and Shanghai Banking Corporation.
    • AZNA=Aziz & Naid. (The website of AZNA Salon says this is the derivation.)
    • NTB=National Tire & Battery.
    • PDG=Prestipino Dental Group (What this one stood for was right on the same sign.)
    • SAT=Scholastic Aptitude Test and ACT=American College Testing. (There was an SAT and ACT prep sign.)
    • NIH=National Institutes of Health sign that mentioned COVID-19=COronaVIrus Disease 2019.

I thought about going to the B-CC YMCA=Bethesda-Chevy Chase Young Men’s Christian Association, but decided that was really overkill.

Ultimately, I decided to go with the sign that had both the longest initialism and a second initialism.

    [ATTACH=CONFIG]24513[/ATTACH]

    Way to trailblaze!
Also I think it’s good you didn’t get the Kiss & Ride sign. I’m not sure that kiss is meant to be the acronym.
