This phone makes Bird Calls. Literally. I thought it was a joke until I checked it out myself (a few years ago; not sure how long it’s existed as an art piece). Dial a number to hear the song of a native Mid Atlantic bird. Brought to you by the lovely creative Village of Takoma Park; corner of Erie and Flower Avenues. See my cross-post to #PublicArtFinder for more pix!

So does this not count as a payphone because of the screw blocking the coin slot?
Boy if I ever do a pointless prize it’ll hafta be a li’l more like Calvinball…. I’d be inclined to give this one 4 points because it’s SO COOL.

This statue is called Lyrical Lady, and is supposed to be of a woman dancing. But the spaces under her arms look like eyes, the bottom of her dress looks like a nose, and the space where her legs should be looks like pursed lips. And she appears to have her hand with the thumb and index finger up against her cheek.

Fascinating — where on the MVT? (I confess I’m spending way too much time thinking about why the remaining pay phones are in the locations they are …)

On the mvt just past Alexandria Avenue, out on the way to fort hunt. There’s also one a bit further south in a parking lot in between fort hunt & mt Vernon just off the trail.

    3/10/21 pay phone!

On the way to Fort Hunt. I was dressed colorfully today so my ride buddy took a pic of me in front of this payphone on the MVT

Unfortunately Josh reminded me I’m supposed to have taken the pic myself. I could totally have taken a selfie, but I forgot that rule. So since it’s not necessary for me to appear in this pic, I’m swapping it out for a pic of the bike & phone. I was careful to make sure the coin slot was visible so it’d be a 3 pointer….. Good thing a coupla people have quoted my original post, so the colorful pic will live on in their reposts. [emoji2358][emoji1744]

Does it count as a sub anagram if it is a picture of a bust of the man himself? (Since I’m not too concerned about the points, what do I have to lose? I found this a few blocks from the Empire Apartments.

Wow that’s so cool that you found a bust of him on his birthday! I agree w/AlanA; it’s better.
But i also think it’s got you covered for a subanagram. Because his name is on the plaque! And how is his name not an anagram of his name? Maybe it got so scrambled it landed right ways up again!

    . . . . . . . …………PRIUS

Would you believe Clay Café Studios doesn’t say “CERAMICS” on it anywhere? That’s what they make! Soooo I found a SERVICE center, an ESCAPE and a PRIUS. People have already posted pix of “service” and “escape” and I didn’t see anything about bonus points for longer words, so here’s my PRIUS pic.

3/8/21 – notable woman (with her achievement)

    Lynn Kristianson

Lynn was a notable DC area cyclist. I went back & forth a bit about whether she would fit the parameters of today’s challenge… but finally decided that the kinds of people who are likely to appreciate a notable CYCLIST are gonna be here…. in my beloved freezing saddles community. Somehow my favorite people always seem to be the extreme ones, who don’t let what’s accepted as normal limit them…..[emoji3531][emoji16]

Lynn rode with Babes on Bikes & the DC randonneurs, among other groups. She did rides so long she’d hafta start in the dark and finish in the dark. Then the next day she’d come on a 35 mile Babes on Bikes ride at 12-14 mph – her “recovery ride” -which was the only time I could keep up with her. [emoji38]

It was 30 miles from the end of one of those 200+ mile rides that she was hit by a car & hurt so badly she hadda be airlifted to the trauma unit in Baltimore…. She ended up getting cancer that metastasized to all the places where she’d been the most seriously injured (which is how cancer behaves. That’s why chemo so often makes people lose their hair…. Hair is one of the faster growing things on our bodies.) I blame the “accident” for her loss. (It was a hit & run.)

She was a beloved mentor to many cyclists. She worked as a reference librarian at the Arlington Central library and was an avid gardener. This engraved stone is at her memorial pollinator garden at Central Library.

Here are a couple of links (which aren’t behaving like links for some reason, but copy-paste will work.)
The first is a writeup about her (which was probably written by Tara Claes, whose husband Steve was my first FS team captain.)
    https://babesonbikes.org/lynn-kristianson/

These are to a couple of slide shows Joan Britt put together. (Joan’s been playing Freezing Saddles for 6 yrs, like me.) Joan took pains on these – they’re really worth looking at.
This is the 22 minute slide show:
    https://youtu.be/_FDcvs2qfss

    Here’s the 6 minute version,
    https://youtu.be/IezMTZiNTLk

which is set to Lynn’s favorite song (Sail Away Ladies.) Music is by Bruce Molsky, her favorite musician; photos and videos were from many of her friends and family.

Thanks for reading all the way to the bottom [emoji16]

Philly has the same female monument drought that kbikeva described in DC, and I even read a bit about a work (“If They Should Ask”) that addresses that dearth. I decided to go with Barbara Gittings, the “mother of the LGBT civil rights movement”. She was the editor of The Ladder, a national lesbian magazine, protested the federal government’s employment ban on gays in front of Independence Hall, and helped get homosexuality dropped from the DSM.

It’s crazy how discriminatory things were not that long ago (and I know I’m not exposed to much given the circumstances of my birth), but Barbara Gittings definitely made things better during her lifetime.

    Nice one, Josh

    3/7/21 – girl scout cookies

Anne rode with me to McLean on the promise of girl scout cookies, but they weren’t there. (I wonder if I went to the same place LisaE went to….) Anne & I were making up stories on the way back about how Drevil mighta caused a run on girl scout cookies with this contest….. Or maybe Boomer had bought them all…. [emoji38]

So I went to the Pet Smart in the Willston shopping center near my house. Anne went home with her 10 miles – it’s not a nice ride to the Pet Smart. Except it was fine today actually.

These 2 cute little girls with huge masks on were there with a mom selling girl scout cookies. They’d run outta thin mints of course, so I bought my husband his backup shortbread cookies, and then I impulse bought Anne a box. She’d declined my offer to get her cookies when we’d parted, so I didn’t know what kind she liked…. So I asked McKinley and Gwen, the cute girl scouts, what their favorites were. One of them had to think about it, but I think it was McKinley who picked the tagalogs. So I bought Anne a box of those.

I kinda forgot it was a selfie I was supposed to take – but I did think to ask the girls if I could take their picture with the cookies for my bike photo contest, so they posed for me. I bet they’re even smiling under those masks.

They’re way cuter than I am anyhow [emoji16]

The black thing in the corner is a bar mitt – I got my bike in the pic – but that’s all you can see of it after the zoom-in.

    3/6/21 – element – ALUMINUM

On my way back from meeting with Millie in MD, on my detour to the Gold’s gym I was gonna settle for (so much less exciting now that Rumi’s posted a pic of it) I remembered seeing a metal recycle dumpster next to the glass dumpster I’ve used at Quincy Park…. and I remembered it saying ALUMINUM on it….

    3df3b6fa15631c220f6fc23ec5d52dd9.jpg

I’m not sure why there’s a metal bin – metal is collected in curbside recycling pickup. Maybe for the park users? And maybe the nearby apartments don’t get curbside pickup? We do hafta bring glass to the bins – but I hear the recycling process works much better this way, so not complaining.

    3/5/21 – monster

I’m using mostly definition # 3: a threatening force …. But it also qualifies for 5: highly successful & arguably also for 2b (of immoral character)

This monster was found in conversation with Anne (awitt, here, I think) while looking for murals depicting monsters on our ride today. We were just turning around on the w&od by the whole foods in Vienna, & she said “Well the only thing more monstruos than Whole Foods is Amazon” and I said “They’ve merged. Ok you convinced me. Thanks,” and snapped this picture:

College Park Lanes aka Bowlero. I serenaded my biking buddies, humming Ravel’s “Bolero”, made famous by the movie “10” starring Bo Derek. (They were unimpressed.)

    3/4/21 – bowling alley

Since I was planning a 2 Beth ride starting & ending in Georgetown today I found this place for me & Hokiebeth. I see I’m not the first to post a pic of it…. I won’t be the last either [emoji38]…. Look for a pic from Hokiebeth taken from just left of mine….

    9e82eab219b1c7465abfceb9fc3e3040.jpg

BTW 2 Beth rides are the bomb. CivilWar Beth = RoutePlannerBeth. She got me my hills back, which I had lost w/radiation lung damage. Riding with friends is the best.

Looking forward to post vaccine riding when we can feel safer about including more & newer riders!
