Coming Winter 2021: W&OD Bridge over Wiehle AVE in Reston. Should be completed in 2 years from now per PDF docs. It would be 18 feet wide:

I haven’t biked in the Great Falls area, but the American Legion Bridge is part of I-495, which is prohibited to cyclists. I wish that they add a multi-use bridge next to it, for those in MD who want to commute to Tysons Corner. The closest bike accessible bridge is Chain Bridge. North/West of that the only thing that resembles a bridge that is bike accessible is White’s Ferry(Next to Leesburg).

One suggestion that I have is similar to jabberwocky Option 2(using Towlston to get to Route 7, see this Google Map link), but use the wide shoulder on route 7 as a bike lane; which becomes occasionally a right turn lane. Use it to go to Gallows RD bike lanes, then to the W&OD. They have added grade separated multi-use paths to the intersection with Dulles Toll RD more than a year ago, so you can cross that intersection easily, which connects you to wide sidewalks that takes you directly to Gallows RD.

VDOT is going to add multi-use paths along Route 7 from Reston to Dulles Toll RD intersection, but you have to wait till 2024. See here for more details: http://connectroute7.org/

I wouldn’t use a road like Towlston myself; too narrow for my comfort.

I was told by a bike mechanic that putting new chain on a worn cassette makes the skipping worse; which was what I experienced. 3000 Miles is the chain life I am getting, but if you delay changing the chain, you wear the gears too. You could get 10K+ out of a cassette if you replace the chain more often.

Also, have you trimmed the chain to the same length? Longer chains skip more. Here is a chain length calculator, but you need to multiply the number of links by 2 since each link is exactly 0.5″ long.

You can tell if gears are worn just by looking at them. Here are some pictures:

Also, Virginia law changed in July and ebikes that get assist up to 28mph aren’t allowed.

Link to law here; which I didn’t know it has changed. However, the law doesn’t say they can’t be used, just that they aren’t allowed to go faster than 25 MPH, even on the road it seems. Quote:

“No person shall at any time or at any location operate (i) an electric personal assistive mobility device or an electric power-assisted bicycle at a speed faster than 25 miles per hour

The limit is less for scooters, 20 MPH.

So did CaBi put their E-Bikes back in operation? I tried this link that Judd posted, but I don’t see any after clicking on few stations.

Rather than passing laws to regulate behavior that is not easily/seldom enforced, I suggest instead mandating that scooter/Ebike operators/bike shops require new registrants/potential buyers to visit a particular county web page. That page would post guidelines(like in my post here is this thread) in how to behave around pedestrians, and that failure to follow these guidelines could results in new laws restricting or prohibiting certain devices or activities.

Many cyclists/scooters copy what others are doing in what I call “deducing laws by the way they are enforced”. At least with a guideline document you could train new comers to a better safer behavior. Another reason things are bad the way they are is that not everyone who cycles/scoots knows this forum, so they are not aware they are doing anything wrong. The link to this forum is not easy to spot at http://www.bikearlington.com/ Can you find it?(It’s the green icon on top of the page)

Edited to add: At least with this approach we reduce the statistics of abuse/misuse, we gain something without spending a penny, and without burdening those who ride safely around pedestrians.

A better approach than just making a general speed limit; is to limit the speed only the closer you are to a pedestrian/pet/wheelchair. If you are within 2 feet, the limit might be 8-10 MPH, one foot 5 MPH. No peds maybe 15 MPH, or not restricted. I think 6 MPH was chosen because it’s twice walking speed. One issue I have with general speed limits like this is when the sidewalks/trails are empty outside busy hours; like around 9 to 10 PM after stores are closed, when some cyclists are leaving work. It’s ridiculous to go 6 MPH when the sidewalks are empty.

I use the sidewalks on Maple AVE in Vienna often; I stop for every pedestrian, otherwise I keep my speed around 10 to 15 MPH. At night, when the sidewalks are empty, I go as fast as possible/reasonable, 18 MPH tops. I don’t want other cyclists/scooters to act like jerks so the town imposes speed limits, etc. You abuse it, you lose it!
