ParticipantHey folks! My name is Millie and this is my fourth Freezing Saddles. My goal is to ride every day – just as I have for the first three years that I competed. I live in College Park and also do group rides with Proteus, sometimes as a volunteer ride leader. The monkey in my personal wrench is that I pull 12 hour shifts that rotate between nights and days, so you won’t necessarily see me getting the most miles on the weekends. But.. this is my second year of doing both shiftwork and FS, so I think I’ll be okay. Going to Michigan for a week in January – hoping to borrow a bike while I’m there from my Dad. See you all around!

ParticipantThere is a gym battle about to start near you!
Here is what this battle entails. If you show up on a bicycle to the Friday College Park coffee club at The Board and Brew TOMORROW, Friday, 12 January, 0800-0930 and order a “Frozemon Special” from the server while the gym trainer is present, you will capture one random Frozemon!

ParticipantAlert! Frozemon have started to invaded Maryland! There are:
A Fancy and a Thirsty surrounding the site of the original REI – now closed.
Two ninjas in a small park near the intersection of New Hampshire and Sligo.
A sporty at the Artwalk in Riverdale Park!Mtansill
ParticipantOf note this exact combination worked fine for me this morning at -7 F windchill. What I didn’t mention is that these boots, of course, have room for all of these layers.
Also, on my legs, I wore regular bike shorts, followed by a merino wool baselayer, followed by the thermal Co-op bicycling pants/tights from REI. Yay for keeping the circulatory system warm.

I don’t clip in. So what I have been wearing that have been comfortable enough for at least 15 miles… First layer, thin socks with some wool content. Second layer, thicker socks – doesn’t have to include wool. Third layer, Ziploc bags over the front of the foot. Fourth layer, some old Thinsulate brand boots. Toes have been a little chilled, but not the blocks of ice that I have felt them at before. I have also tried cycling shoes meant for inclement weather instead of the boots (not as much room for air and water to seep in), but it’s been too cold for that the past few days.
I am also a firm believer in making sure to keep my legs warm enough – I’ve been wearing multiple layers on those – to encourage better blood circulation to my extremities.

Participant#bafs2018
There are 17 Instagram photos from FS participants already posted to this hashtag. Are they going to count, or is everyone going to have to edit their hashtags to include #BAFS2018?

ParticipantRequest for clarification – can only one person get points for each item? For example, if we all post Watergate photos and get the likes, do we all get the points for Watergate, or does only the first person get the points for Watergate?
I can’t follow the forums that closely, so am hoping that it’s not a race based on forum postings.
Cheers.

Yeah, but my point is that, for me at least, nothing I wear is going to dry until either 1) I’ve gotten home and sat in a warm house for 3 hours or 2) I tossed it in the dirty clothes hamper. The only articles of clothing I wear biking that dry while biking are the outer layers after it stops raining.
My floor vents are usually covered with biking gloves in the winter to dry them out in time to use them again the next day.

No. This is actually a terrible idea. Plastic (and items like plastic such as latex or nitrile gloves on hands) do not breathe at all. Your hands/feet WILL sweat. That sweat has nowhere to go. The sweat then gets cold, as wet things tend to do when it is chilly out. Then your extremities get even colder, which could potentially lead to nerve/tissue damage, frost bite, or hypothermia.
Yes. Well. I haven’t lost any toes yet, and this is going to be my fourth year. One note – I only use baggies – they only cover the front half of my toe. Larger bags that cover the entire foot might not work as well because even more dampness would get trapped.
And yes, I’ve ridden multi-hour rides while wearing baggies on my toes. While my feet do sweat, the wool socks absorb the sweat and the protection from the wind usually outweighs the downside of sweat not evaporating as well.

Some of us lowly novices have never taken to our steeds in sub-freezing weather. Do those of you veterans have any advice to help us keep our toes intact and our bikes upright?

Saving toes- my cheap-o solution that really works for adding protection from the wind for my toes is to put baggies over the front of my feet before putting them in my shoes. It’s really a noticeable difference. Some may scoff at the idea – Ziploc is maybe expensive – but if I insert my toes carefully, I can get at least a week’s worth of rides into one pair. I also tend to wear two layers of socks sometimes – a thinner wool layer next to my foot and then something slightly fluffier as the second layer. You just have to make sure that your boots/shoes are a little roomier than normal.
See you out there!

ParticipantHey folks! I have added up the points for this prize. However, I just noticed that Instagram has blocked recent photos under my hashtag #fs17allthethings because of questionable content… Must be Steve O’s warming climate entry…
What this means: if you posted something to the hashtag #fs17allthethings, it may not be there anymore. CHECK IT. I see Steve O’s three photos, but no others on Instagram. Kwarkentian, I see your entries on this thread. Repost any post you think is missing on this thread instead.
Deadline to right any errors: Friday March 31st at noon. Let me know if there are any issues.
Thanks,

ParticipantI will NOT be able to make it, as I have to work until 9pm that evening.
However, I WILL have someone there to present the Multitasking prize on my behalf!

ParticipantI went to Vigilante this morning, and then stopped at a new place – my local 7-Eleven gas station (!) on the way home!
As my not-quite-so-grand finale, I chose three things from 7-eleven. The glazed sour cream – also one of my favorite types of doughnuts – was good – normal – what I expected. Not as good as Raulin’s, but that’s understandable. The creative donut – lemon pie – was a pretty nice attempt at a lemon meringue version of a doughnut. Lemon-filled, with lemon frosting and some graham cracker crumbles. Not bad – I would eat that again. It didn’t have the harsh after-taste that lemon filling sometime can have. The third doughnut – a mini chocolate-frosted Hostess variety! Yeah… George is the fan of these, so I was thinking of him. Some of these chocolate-frosted mini doughnuts that you can buy in bulk have a rather waxy frosting. The Hostess one that I ate this morning, did not. George won’t be the only one eating the rest of these…

ParticipantMy St Patrick’s Day submissions! I had to work 12 hours on Friday, but I had enough time to visit my local Dunkin Donuts again for an early morning jolt of green. The first with chocolate frosting and shamrock sprinkles, the second with green frosting – possibly vanilla flavored.
Typical DD – not bad, but not too different. Tasty. If anything, I enjoyed the crunch of the shamrock sprinkles as I ate them.
