I rode the W&OD from Virginia Lane to the Custis to Key bridge on 35c studded tires.

I walked once for maybe 100 yards (where trail is along Shreve Road) and put my foot down in a couple of places (e.g., bridge over creek in FC, bridge over Spout Run), but trails are rideable with, as I said, 35c studs.

I was happy to see that key Bridge was in great shape, totally devoid of snow on the south sidewalk.

Is the Custis cleared, and the W&OD between Custis and East Falls Church

““City of Falls Church residents don’t just walk or bike that one small portion of the trail and then turn around and go home,” ProBikeFC owner, Nick Clark, said. “It just doesn’t make sense to make those kinds of changes to a small section of a [45-mile] trail.”

“Clark is adamantly impartial on what happens to the trail since, as a professional cyclist, the public thoroughfare is too casual for him to want to ride on it regularly. “

So a self-proclaimed pro cylist (must be ex-pro, if anything) who doesn’t ride on the trail (does he ride on 29? 7? at all thru FC?) dumps on the rest of us. I mean, I commute through FC every day, usually 2X/day, and after dark especially it would be good to have a separate trail for pedestrians. Lights might be even better IMO.

Doesn’t make me want to try Clark’s shop. I didn’t even know it existed before this article.

Saw today that Vienna store(In Tysons Corner) has “Store closing” sign with 30-50% off. It was after hours, so I couldn’t tell what’s on sale.

Everything’s on sale. I bought the stuff you always need-tires, chains, tubes.

That’s a dangerous intersection. I am very cautious entering it. I did the math years ago (started bike commuting 24 years ago), and thought that if I want to live through hundreds of times crossing that intersection I’d better be cautious. I have never been hit there yet (though I did end up on the hood of a car just two blocks from there, at Oak St.).

I had two goals for 2017: to ride at least 8,000 miles, and get my weight down to about 80 kilos. I called it Project 8K and 80K (catchy, right?). I rode 10,110 miles. I lost weight but only half of what I aimed for and gave up months ago and haven’t weighed myself in a while. I am now fattening up to survive winter bike commuting before starting on my next sisyphean weight loss project.

Yeah, if that wasn’t serious, you are a real follower of Rule #5. I like your idea of just taking the Custis into Rosslyn. Just watch out for red light runners at both N. Oak and Ft. Meyer. Both are no turn on red, but people ignore that, and I’ve had scary close calls at both over the years. Heal up well, both physically and mentally.

Worst crash I have been in was being hit at N. Oak by car slowly running the light making a right turn while I was coming into Rosslyn on the Custis. I ended up on the hood of the car. That was before they installed the new bike lights where they just had walk lights before. Didn’t seem like much of an improvement at the time to me but it seems that drivers behave better there now.

Good. Too many cyclists blow through there in the am. There’s a school bus stop right there and I’ve seen a few kids almost get bowled over.

I agree. I always stop at that stop sign. Cyclist in front of me was pulled over today. I mean, the cops were waiting and she still ran it.

I have been to Bicycles and Coffee (formerly known as Veloville) often. It is not in the Trails End space. It is on E. Main Street, Rte. 7. So if you are on the trail heading out to Purcelville, when it crosses E. Main at the High School just a bit before it ends, you turn left on the road. Bicycles and Coffee is in a shopping center on the right in about 1/4 to 1/2 mile. The coffee is very good. The snacks are healthy stuff, not the scones and other things you’d get from most coffee shops. Pre-packaged stuff.

I was thinking of doing this tonight but is anyone going to do it? More fun if it’s muddy!

Dedicated drivers do it every day, but others only on Drive to Work day for the swag.
