ParticipantOr do we grab 2 or 3 of everything and meet up at Freedom plaza to swap?

ParticipantI’ve started riding my bike from DC to the Pentagon to catch a bus home to Fairfax. I’m always amazed how few bikes I see at the Pentagon transit center. Just about every bus in Northern Virginia terminates at the Pentagon. It would be the perfect place for some last-mile bike infrastructure (like a CaBi station?). That said, I have ridden from Columbia Island to the right, up the ramp to Washington Blvd, counterflow along the sidewalk/path on Washington Blvd by the 911 memorial to the south parking lot (1.1 miles). It works pretty well but seemed a little circuitous (traveling around 3 of the 5 faces of the Pentagon). Now I turn left out of the parking lot at Columbia Island and head down boundary channel drive to the connector road which dumps you right at the Pentagon Transit Center (0.5 Miles). To get to Columbia Pike I think you could cross over washington blvd near the south lot, but I would have to check the map.

I usually arrive much earlier, but I’m curious how you take to get from Vienna metro to get to the W&OD in an efficient manner to head into DC. I’ve gone the 123 Nutley route before, but that seems more distance than necessary, and Rt 29 isn’t exactly a breeze in the park. Options?
From the Northside Entrance of Vienna Metro proceed to the intersection of Virginia Center and Vaden Drive. Cross with the light onto Vaden Drive, continue until you come to a circle, notice the trail at 11 o’clock. Take the trail. Continue along the trail until you see a sharp right turn leading onto a very short path connecting to the street. If you reach Nottoway Park you’ve gone too far. Turn left on Tapawingo Road and continue to the intersection with Tapawingo Road and Nutley Street. I prefer to follow Tapawingo up to a left onto Meadow Lane then a right onto Courthouse Road (wonderful bike lane) and a right onto Locust St. At the end of Locust you will enter Center Street and be within sight of the Vienna Community Center where the W&OD is located.
+1 on Nottoway park. There is a pretty good blind downhill corner in the park so be sure to use your bell, and if you get to the bollards at the parking lot you have missed the right hand turn-off onto Tapawingo.

. . . Happy to rally there and ride in to DC (pit stopping at rosslyn) with anyone. I’d like to stop at Freedom Plaza before heading in to the office at 12th/D SE.

Adam – I will probably be at the Falls Church pitstop around 6:30. I’d be happy to ride in to Rosslyn with you, but then again the whole W&OD will probably feel like a convoy.
See you there.

ParticipantSadly I wimped out as well. Woke up a little late, and didn’t get out the door till nearly 7. By that point I would have been too late to work by bike alone, so it was a Bike To Burke Centre VRE and Cabi kind of day. This afternoon I will be trying my luck at biking to the Pentagon Transit Center and hopping on a bus to return me to my bike. Not quite a heroic 50 mile day, but I’ll take 12.2.

Participant@5555624 I like the pace of Eye street, plus I feel a little safer with the bike lanes. I jump on M after NJ to head down to the yard.
@americancyclo I’ll be in red and black (like just about half of the other bikers out there).May leave earlier than normal to avoid the chance for later morning showers.

ParticipantI would put one either inside the Navy Yard, or just outside the gate (M between 6th and 7th, SE). There are a lot of people who walk or ride shuttles between the navy yard and the navy yard metro. Also if just outside the gate (for security reasons) would be nice for people parking for Nats games at the various parking lots up and down M street.
