My wife is the real machine though, here’s a picture of her pulling the bike seat and gear-loaded traler up the Custis in Rosslyn.

ParticipantNah, vvil, you were pushing me!
On Sunday My wife and I passed a Segue tour, me pulling the two boys, my wife with the bike seat and trailer. As we passed, I told my kids to pedal hard, put out my feet and shouted, “Weeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.” Should have seen the looks on the tour guide’s face, priceless.

In all the years I’ve been riding through this interesection, I’ve never seen the pedestrian light come on except when the button has been pushed. I complained about that on this board when I first joined. Especially for west bound traffic is extremely dangerous because that’s the only light facing westbound trail traffic. If I remember right, the traffic engineer’s response was basically too bad, bikes should push the button and wait another light cycle.
Could you imagine the hubbub if a car had to wait 2 cycles to get the green.

ParticipantDisclaimer,
My wife actually took the Chariot trailer for most of the ride, you can see it attached to her bike in the 3rd photo there. She took it all the way down and up the custis. I took it for a few miles on the way back until I had a rear spoke break in Vienna. She deserves most of the gear toting credit.

Gear on table is what we took for the 3 day weekend. 3 kids on double tandem, and bike seat on wife’s bike. Basket held rain jackets and camera, Red backpack held some clothes, flat kit, shoes, notebook. Panniers fit to bike seat stem rack above burley rack where double tandem attaches. Water bottles, Brita water filter, toys, books, pillows and sheets, and clothing, also Minnie cooler for food (we cooked at the lockhouse), and black zipper topped grocery bag for dry food.
We left fairfax, near GMU, traveled across FFX City, down olde lee highway along the FFX Connector trail to Vienna Metro, and Nottaway park. Up Tappawingo, Adahi to W&OD, CUSTIS, Key Bridge to G-Town (lunch), We then walked bikes along M street and Wisconsin and resumed on bike on K street, CCT to C&O to Lock house 6. About 25 miles in all. Great fun!

ParticipantYou also want to be careful around the Lincoln Memorial during rush hour, drivers are always angry there and it’s difficult to cross even on the sidewalk to get to the mall. An alternative would be to stay on the rock creek park trail along the river, then turn left at Ohio drive, and come up to the north side of Independence, then follow the paths along independence past the WWII, Washington Monument, and Smithsonian castle, then follow the route listed. As you get more confident you can ride along Independence to save a bit of time ( at least east of 15th street). 41st street is a killer, and it can be very slippery, so be careful! The C&O canal between Chain bridge and Fletcher’s boat house is rather rocky/rough, (Park service and the canal trust has improved the trail west of chain bridge, but that really doesn’t do you any good.)
Otherwise have fun.

ParticipantDarn back to school night, have fun for me.

ParticipantWhen the cop asked him how he could prove it was his bike, I wanted to point out that the front tube and headset had obviously perked up and were riding a little higher, and that you can see the seat stays actually wagging, when the bike heard it’s owner’s voice. Sorry companion’s voice.

Participanthaving been a submarine officer, and having given orderes to sonar from the conn, I would like to be involved in the creation of this. Funny story, when onboard a submarine going out to sea, you are allowed to bring along an “underway cap” to wear in place of the uniform ship’s ball cap. Some people brought a cap of their favorite ball club, I brought a Colonial Williamsburg Tri-corner hat. And once underway I learned that the Executive Officer really gets upset if you give orders from the Conn in a pirate voice whilst wearing a ‘pirate hat’. “Helm, Sonar, Dive, Ti’s be Leftenanant Essig — the Deck and the Conn be Mine!”. “Conn, Xo fix yourself!”
