I would prefer that the NPS did the following:
- Pre-treat and plow:
- Boundary Channel Bridge -> Columbia Island Marina -> MVT -> Humpback Bridge -> 14th St Bridge (about 0.9 miles)
- Crystal City Connector -> MVT -> 14th St Bridge (about 2.0 miles)
- Belle Haven Marina -> MVT -> Royal Street in Old Town (up to and past the Wilson Bridge, about 1.4 miles)
- Pre-treat (there is some overlap here):
- MVT from Memorial Bridge -> Belle Haven Marina (about 8.0 miles excluding on-road segments)
- the rest of the MVT if possible (about 9.0 miles remaining)
Just out of curiosity, why are you suggesting that they only pretreat the section of the MVT between Old Town/Oronoco Park and the Crystal City Connector, but pretreat and plow other sections of the MVT north and south of there? It seems like you would have a huge section that would not be plowed. Cost/feasibility?

Still better than the metro or driving is my usual response
Or appetite control, for that matter.

ParticipantSpokes is running a discount on their bike fitting services -$100 for a road or mountain bike -only slightly more than a 17-mile WABA biking event, and neither gives you lunch 😎 (kidding). I’m not affiliated with Spokes and never had a full-fledged bike fit before, but I know lot of people, including posters in these forums, have said they can be extremely worthwhile.

ParticipantBiked into DC from Belle View on the MVT. Minor ice fields on the Dyke Marsh Bridge and on the path towards Jones Point Bridge. Bigger ice fields on the big path under the WWB and towards the town homes, and just north of the power plant (river side). Not too bad otherwise.

ParticipantI don’t mind supporting WABA, but this seems pretty-flipping expensive for a 17-mile bike ride.

ParticipantFrankly, seeing what snow plows do to the streets, I would be worried the plows would tear up the path, and also would not want NPS putting down chemicals to deal with refreezing issue that close to the river. Much as I would rather than ride than take Metro, clearing the path might make things worse in the long run.

ParticipantFrom the little I could see from the Metro, the MVT didn’t look clear at all.

ParticipantHola. This is my first time on Freezing Saddles. Most of my riding is commuting, about 11.5 miles each way, usually 3 or 4 days a week although I tend to wimp out if its too cold or there is snow/ice on the MVT.

Yep. They said at the last Arlington BAC meeting that the snow removal plan is ready to go, same as last year. In fact, at tonight’s BAC meeting (7pm 2100 Clarendon Blvd), NPS will be there to discuss snow removal on their trails. We also have an item on the agenda to talk with ArlCo staff about the need to remove snow from trails that weren’t maintained last year, which was created by the effective closure of Fort Myer.
If you provide an update on what NPS says, that would be appreciated by the MVT warriors. I presume they will still plow the Mall area.

ParticipantNo more col de wood chip, or shooting up the airport access road going northbound, trying to avoid the sewer grates.
MFC
ParticipantOn a different note, there is a Strava segment for part of that detour named Col de Wood Chip, which should be in the running best segment name. It also has a top speed of 76.4 mph, which seems a little suspect.

ParticipantAnyone know if 15th Street NW is closed to bikes due to the National Xmas Tree lighting? Thanks.

Gentrification is a genuine issue, I get that. But I don’t buy that the heat being directed against these bike lanes in these specific instances is really about gentrification. This is about MARYLAND residents wanting convenient parking.
Being against bike lanes can be the latest form of NIMBY-ism.

So what’s the answer? Reflectors. A car is burning 100W to throw a consistent 1000+ lumens ahead of it. When that light hits a reflector, it will send an order of magnitude more light back at the driver than you’ll get off a blinky. The people who take the reflectors off their bike because they’re not cool and still ride at night, frankly, are idiots. Get a front reflector, a rear reflector, pedal or shoe reflectors, spoke reflectors or reflective sidewalls (those things rock), wear reflective gear, and consider applying reflective tape in strategic locations on your bike. Get good lights also, and use them in pairs (I’ve been happy with a vis360 as my backup light, as I can tell from the front beam whether the rear light has enough power.) But the reflectors don’t run out of batteries, are visible from more angles if installed well, and are a heck of a lot cheaper than good lights….
You can also get some reflective tape or reflective stickers at your LBS or Amazon, etc. There is a brand call Nathan that has some pretty good offerings. I have some on my seat stays, front fork and a reflective circle on my head tube so I should be visible even if my lights run out of juice.
