ParticipantThe GW roundabout is bearable. Annoying. But bearable as long as one is awake. I wish there were bike lanes the whole way down Penn though.

ParticipantHere is my official route I think I will settle on. The little red loop by K-Street is how I get around that 27th Street intersection now.

Thanks for your useless ad hominem comments and not answering my question about the legality of the route.
You must be a real joy to meet the first time and hope you take the same criticism when you peer into a mirror.
I think it most reasonable to EXPECT the one enforcing the law to know it.
I’m quite nice to meet in person, when the person I’m meeting isn’t insulting an entire profession for something you don’t even know the answer to in the first place.
You’re whining that I didn’t answer your question. Yet a good half or more of your post was nothing to do with your question. Rather it was about alleging this police officer was persecuting you and abusing his power. You opened the door to that discussion, so don’t complain when someone responds to it. If my response is “useless ad hominem”, then I guess that would make half of your post useless ad hominem as well. Had you simply asked the question without accusing the police officer of baseless malfeasance, then I would have had nothing to say on the matter other than wonder it myself. It is a great question.
As for suggesting that the police officers know everything about everything, I presume you’ve never been wrong or made a mistake in the course of your job either, right?

ParticipantI did a few dry runs this weekend. I found that I very much dislike the mall, Independence, Constitution. Way too many people and cars with no bike lines. So I coincidentally came up with a little bit of a hyprid of you #2 suggestion.
Bike path through the waterfront but cut UP the rock creek bike path just a bit to the little ramp up to Pennsylvania Ave. At this point it is Penn all the way to the office. On-street with no bike lanes through that death defying god forsaken piece of crap GW roundabout right passed the White House. From the White House to 10th street, there are bike lanes and it is perfect.
I don’t like the stretch of Penn with no bike lanes or that stupid circle. But there doesn’t appear to be any remarkably better way either. This is why I plan to install enough lights on my bike to rival some fire trucks.

ParticipantI think your condescending attitude toward the police officer is what is more in question than whether cycling through the tunnel is allowed or not. It is standard procedure to check the ID of those whom are stopped. Alleging it was for intimidation is purely a lie. And stopping you for going through the tunnel was not “abusing his authority”. Either it IS illegal and you are wrong (perish the thought), or it isn’t illegal and it was an honest mistake on his part. And his assertion that it is not safe is correct regardless of legal or not and his intention was clearly not malicious. It is laughable that you posted a picture of his cruiser as if anyone would go after him for doing his job to the best of his abilities. Though I might look him up and send him a thank you note for stopping you. Maybe if you didn’t just assume every hard working police officer was out to get you, you wouldn’t make such foolish posts on the internet.
If you posted your question with the same condescending holier than thou attitude to DDOT and WABA, I am not surprised you didn’t get an answer.

Wish I had these today . . . we got an email a couple of days ago that our buidling is considered “closed” today due to the federal holiday, even though my colleagues and I are working. Therefore the locker room and gym are closed. I considered my options, and not wishing to offend my co-workers, I rode metro. I need to order these because I’m sure the same thing will happen on the day after New Year’s Day (or whenever the feds get off on that weekend). Or are they available at my LBS?

ParticipantThat’s what I figured as well. How are they with rutted ice and getting OUT of those ruts?

ParticipantMy only bike is a mountain bike, but it would be for use on the paved road and paved trail. Are the Hakalakadakas “better” than the extremes when on normal dry pavement?

Participanthmm. I think I know where the REI gift card I have is going to be spent now. My boss gives these things to me and then tells me not to buy anything crazy. I’m sure my next one will be to Macy’s instead.
I wonder if it would be beneficial to just buy one spare wheel so I can just quickly swap the front wheel in a matter of seconds. The back is more of a PITA to switch so I would be much less motivated to swap it out based on the weather.
Which do you think is better in snow/slush, the Hakkalakadakawhatever or the Extreme?

ParticipantHe needs to be arrested for the violent broad daylight assault. That is criminal. A civil suit along with criminal charges, probably not necessary if you don’t have actual damages. If you do, he should be held responsible then.

ParticipantIf it was a police officer… is there a speed limit on the trail? The CCT (only one I’m familiar with that has a limit) is 15mph. Perhaps he was either looking to give out some bike tickets or just reminding people not to be stupid.
MCL1981
ParticipantHe did not tackle you to detain you for evading an accident. He tackled you because he was angry you touched his precious drug-dealer mobile even though it was his fault for not yielding to the cross walk. You did not have an accident to evade either. You caught your balance on his car, which he was operating in violation of the law, because you avoided an accident. Touching one’s automobile is not a crime. IMO, he has no civil or statutory leg to stand on. In his rage, this thug violently assaulted you in the middle of the street in broad daylight. He should be in jail now, not later. I think you absolutely NEED to file for actual real assault charges against this piece of shit. And in addition to the assault, add to the affidavit the charge of the illegal/unsafe turn too.
And your assessment of the police officers being lazy and not wanting to do anything is most likely right on the ball. Total bullshit.

ParticipantCan I make a suggestion here, especially to those with plasma reactor powered headlights… Your cars headlights have to be properly aimed for good reason. Your bike should be no different an the result of not doing so is the same as with your car.
Measure the height from the ground up to the center of the headlight as mounted on your handlebar. Lets say it is 40″ Put your bike about 25ft from a wall on flat level ground. Mark that height up the wall with a piece of tape or other marking apparatus, in our example, 40″. Now with your bike back about 25ft from the wall, level the headlight beam so the top of the beam pattern is about 2″ below the mark. Done.
This is the same way headlights are aimed. This ensures that your death-ray is shining out but not up into people’s faces.

ParticipantThat is pure laziness and I would be on the phone or in the station with whomever is higher up than he is.

ParticipantDo you think the NPS would take a hint of we all went in there with paint thinner and belt sanders in the middle of the night?
