WTF. I took the long way home last night and sat at this light for at least 5 minutes while I was waiting to go westbound on the WOD.

I am the first to stop at the intersection so I must have just missed the walk signal. The walk signal is active for peds who wish to cross Four Mile Run Drive, after a couple minutes they get a don’t walk signal. The vehicular traffic from four mile run then gets a green light, however WOD users DO NOT get a signal to cross columbia pike. At this point a few eastbound users cross anyway and one super elite cyclists squeezes around me to run the light. Vehicular signals change so Columbia Pike has a green and the walk signal activates to cross Four Mile Run Dr. After a couple minutes the walk signal goes red, however the vehicular signals do not change, then the walk signal activates again for peds to cross Four Mile Run Dr. I sit there for a couple more minutes before the light turn red for vehicles on Columbia Pike and WOD users finally get a walk signal.

Is this normal for this intersection? I usually take custis home, and will continue to do so I think. I forgot how many at grade intersections there are on the WOD between Columbia Pike and Shirlington.

This would seem to require that we carry the entire book around with us at all times. Would a xeroxed page from the book be an acceptable substitute?

Note: There will be a new Hump Day Coffee Club at Best Buns in Shirlington beginning next week, and all cyclists mentioned in the book are cordially invited to attend the inaugural event (and those following it). ;-)

ooh, finally a FCC (albeit a very confused FCC on a Wednesday) that is actually convenient to my normal commute route. what time is this HDCC?

Still riding this Sunday? ‘Cross season is just around the corner, it’s time to put the knobbies back on and get dirty.

This is kind of related – but a friend of mine often encourages early morning jaunts down the GW parkway from McLean. Early being 6am (and on the weekends). A little Googling shows that the NPS does not allow bikes on the Parkway, but I just wanted to check and see if I missed something and it is acceptable practice during “off-hours”.

This has been a fairly recent change. GWP (south of old town) and Clara barton pkwy used you be great roads for weekend cycling until a couple of years ago NPS decided to ban bikes. There is talk about getting CB opened for bikes on weekend mornings (mostly for the 7 and 10am rides) because the alternative is to have hundreds of cyclists on MacArthur, which sucks.

As far as I know there are no times when it would be acceptable to ride your bike on the GW parkway.

A trick I have seen done is to take a really short brake cable and feed it through the clamp where the brake mounts. Use the same lever on both sides but the one wont pivot at all.

So I may be the weirdo that rides in at 0500, but I am a dry weirdo at least. I didn’t even realized it rained (sidebar, I really wish I worked above ground level).

Nasty car wreck had Beauregard blocked this morning. Vehicle had rolled at least once and was resting on the drivers side door. Lots of Emergency response. Kind of surreal to see it up close.

Was that MattAune with his new road machine on top of a minivan? (Though that is Rule 4 compliant.)

Sadly, yes that was me. My wife was going to freshbikes to look for new shoes. I decided to hitch a ride to the TNR, I did however man up and ride the bike home after the ride. I Went the ShawnoftheDread approved route of 19th->Cherry->Annandale Rd. Then I proceeded to get lost in my own neighborhood.

I caught up with Dirt after the free food and he showed me a much easier way to get from Ballston to the Custis. Thanks for that, it was a pleasure to ride with you.

If he only needs it to get through the next 6 weeks then I have one here he can borrow. We have two fluid trainers so that my son and I can train together in the winter. It’s not winter, and we aren’t using them.

If you are looking for a longer term purchase, definitely spend the money on a Cylops Fliud Pro2, or a Kurt Kinetic Road Machine. The resistance units on the more expensive fluid trainers is totally worth it. Magnetic and Wind resistance units are much louder and IMO make it feel like I am pedaling through mud. The cheap fluid units tend to get really hot and leak.

If your friend really wants the ultimate training tool look at the Wahoo Kickr or a Computrainer, but both of these are in the $1k and up range.

If you have a regular backpack, and a garbage bag to put inside of it with your clothes, you do have a waterproof backpack.

I obviously was not thinking clearly at 0500 this morning, and for that I apologize. Now I feel silly about how simple that solution is.

Im surprised at how little action there is at Hains Point on a Saturday. Maybe everyone saves that for weekdays. Pretty cool visualization though.

RaceShape also does a strava heat map. although you cant filter based on time. http://raceshape.com/heatmap/
