    It is comforting to know that I am sexist if I offer to help and sexist if I don’t offer to help. Shrodinger’s Sexism?

    There are bike shops all along the WOD.

    * Fresh Bikes in Ballston
    * Bikenetic and Contes in Falls Church
    * Spokes and Bikes Vienna in Vienna
    * Performance and the Bike Lane in Reston
    * Green Lizard in Herndon
    * Bike outfitters and the triathalon shop in Leesburg
    * Trail End Cycling, Velo Classic, Bikes and Coffee in Purceville
    * The trail is constantly patrolled by Trail Patrol volunteers who have limited supplies and can help with small repairs. They wear yellow vests with triangle logos on them

    And a bunch others that I havent mentioned. But there is basically a bike shop almost within walking distance anywhere along the WOD (one of the reasons the WOD is a great sort of safety route).

    Someone I road with on this forum fell off her fattie last week – and within moments there was a skilled mechanic on us who volunteered to help unjam the derailer.

    So what is the market failure that requires vending machines to louse up the place? Let’s support our LBSs.

    As a case study, go to the vending machine in Crystal City and see how its stocked and doing. Simple answer, it isnt.

    How are any of these places going to help me at 7am on a Sunday?

    How does it work with the GPS? At least with my Garmin Edge 500, it turns off the moment you start charging it, which would be an issue in this context.

    As for the husband, you know you can get devices that allow one power outlet to run more than one phone/tablet/etc.?

    All of the garmins since the 500 have allowed you to charge and record at the same time. Time for an upgrade!

    I think he’s suggesting that it’s an improperly set up trainer that allows this, and could therefore be used to game the pointless pointless prize. Like an infinite loop of pointlessness.

    A perfect metaphor for this thread.

    Correct, while it would be a super lame thing to do, it would be possible to set your trainer in “ERG” mode at 100 watts. No matter what gear I am in or what speed I am “riding” the trainer will maintain a perfect 100 watts. Something I totally expect Cannon to try now that I explained it, he wants that damn chicken.

    Kathy, this thread quickly got out of control (by way of my own contribution for sure). I don’t intend to bully or discourage anyone INCLUDING MATT from riding, inside, outside, or from participating in BAFS.

    Reset! I assure you me sense of humor is a bit over the top…

    Going back to my initial thread. I simple wanted to recognize the person who road the most on a trainer. In fact it started because I invited a friend to play BAFS and she ended up riding inside almost every day so far, I was secretly rooting for her to win. I “thought” it would be a fun comical prize and could include a hilarious prize. People seemed to even respond positively to the idea.

    This was never intended to be a debate about wether indoor trainers are good, bad, lame, none of that. Just a way for people who are outside suffering in the cold to have a good laugh when it’s all over. Sure, a laugh at someone else’s expensive is never a great idea, but I thought it was all in good fun. After all, we have had awards for the slowest rider and so on.

    I don’t want anyone in this community to feel intimidated or pressured to ride. You should feel welcome here and you should definitely keep on riding however or whatever way you choose to do so.

    I’m going for a bike ride[emoji1338]

    It is a fun comical prize, its truly the perfect pointless prize actually.

    At no point did i ever suggest that indoor rides should count towards FS points. I just have no shame in that fact that I am going to ride inside a bit during the game.

    Have fun if you hit the happy hour – sorry can’t make it. BTW is there someway to get the thread attached to an email address so I don’t have to “check back” all the time??

    If you click “Thread Tools” on the top you can “subscribe”. You can then get emails whenever someone responds to the thread.

    Sorry, but I am working until 10pm or so tonight so I wont be able to make happy hour. I would normally be in for a few beers though.

    Honz, do they get dumped somewhere? Or does your parsing routine literally just skip right over them? If they get discarded as GARBAGE (which they are!) I’m happy to sift thought the trash to find the dirtiest of them all. Otherwise we just have to take nominations and put it to a poll! That could be even funnier! A peer poll to vote of who everyone thinks sucks the most, this could get ugly[emoji109]

    I think you are confused on the definition of garbage miles. Every minute on the trainer is focused and has a purpose. Noodling around at 14mph for 7 hours is literally the definition of garbage miles.

    I will also add that if the pointless prize is based on miles, anyone not on an electronically controlled smart trainer is at a major disadvantage. On my Kickr i can ride 53×11 (34ish mph) at 100 watts without breaking a sweat. I certainly wont be doing this as it defeats the point, but I would put nothing past Cannon.

    No what if, that’s fine. You just may even win a prize for it!

    I’m not going to debate the reasons why trainers are good or bad. Just the fact that you signed up for an OUTDOOR WINTER RIDING CONTEST AND YOU ARE RIDING A TRAINER INSIDE YOUR HOUSE WHILE YOUR TEAMMATES ARE OUTSIDE GETTING IT IN! That’s all

    What if we ride the turbo because 3×12 or 2×20 sweet spot efforts are basically impossible to do outside? I will be riding the shit out of my trainer this winter and I have no shame about doing so.

    Just to be a pain, I will mention that I routinely see greater than a 15w variance between my stages and Quarq/Powertap on the same bike on the same ride. Then throw in wind, Crr, CdA differences and it is really hard to make any conclusions.

    One day maybe I will do a few back to back runs on the same bike and same power meter switching between fixed and singlespeed because it is a pretty interesting question.
