I have the opposite (converse?) issue. Everything was warm this morning EXCEPT my toes.
For extra protection, I packed my Goretex rain shorts, but I didn’t need them. I find that rain pants or rain shorts work great in the cold and wind.

Great place. New. (Space used to be occupied by a Latin American chicken joint; I think their sign is still up.)

Do I need to include the hashtag to get my miles and rides counted? I have rides (for three days now) that are showing up in Strava, but not on the Freezing Saddles leaderboard. Where do I put the hashtag? I’m generally not using Strava to record the rides, but Wahoo. However, the rides are automatically imported into Strava and show up in my Activity Log. If I need to add hashtags, I would have to go into Strava and edit the ride description. Should I be doing that? I don’t remember having to tag rides last year. But I was using Strava then, not Wahoo.

I had that happen (a mile, with time elapsed, but no distance) with Strava (or maybe with Wahoo) when the GPS wasn’t registering. However, I figured it out in the middle of the ride, and shortly thereafter the GPS started to register. (I think I turned the unit off-and-on, but don’t know if that did the trick.) Does Strava automatically acquire a GPS signal, or is there a brief lag? With Wahoo, there is an explicit acknowledgement that it’s “searching for GPS” and then “GPS acquired”.

Didn’t get a good look as I drove past, but saw enough to know there was another bike / car crash at Columbia Pike & Washington Blvd this morning around 9am. I hope everyone involved is ok.

Going which direction? I avoid this intersection if at all possible, by going through Ft Myer. (Temporary pass/ID is available to civilians who live in the neighborhood.)

The previous responses seem to have addressed keeping the toes warm, but not keeping the bike upright.
    Re: Keeping toes warm
    As usual, YMMV.
    – I love winter bike shoes (I have a pair of ancient North Waves). They were worth the $$, since nothing else seems to work for me. Or work as well, and be less hassle to contend with.
    – Mittens are much warmer than gloves — your fingers keep each other warm.
    – Whatever gloves/mittens you end up wearing, carry a thin pair of gloves for contending with mechanical issues, if any arise. With the touch-sensitive finger tips.
    Re: keeping the bike upright
    – Studded tires. In DC, the return on investment might be marginal, since there is usually not that much snow or ice lingering on the roads (but more on the paths), but these are incredibly useful. I rode securely those days last week when there was some snow/ice. It’s easier to have a spare wheel set up (I actually just use a studded tire on a front wheel), but you can obviously swap tires with the weather. Studded tires won’t fit on narrow road rims, so make sure you have a rim width that will work.
    General
At one point, I actually made up a chart, which showed which type of clothing/shoes/other I needed to use with each 5-degree change (drop) in temperature. It was really helpful, especially from one season to the next, when I might forget, oh, how many/which layers do I need on top when it’s 30 degrees out, with a windchill of 20. I think I saw one of these published somewhere recently.

Any suggestions on the best tires, shoes, pedals, and or other tips so I am able to have more success in muddy cyclocross races? I usually can’t clip my shoes in and am pretty much slipping all over the place.

I don’t know, but Wednesday night I attended a talk by Meredith Miller, UCI world-level cyclocross racer. She works for Rapha at the Boulder store, but was at the DC pop-up store for that presentation/holiday party. Rapha might be able to provide contact information. At the world champion-level, they address the mud problem by having multiple bikes, and getting them washed between laps.

Yes, the cue sheet can be a bit bothersome. However, this year WABA had a Ride with GPS route. Using it was wonderful! I still looked at the cue sheet to get a preview of coming turns, but mostly relied on the Ride with GPS route. My phone battery, set to low-powered, even lasted the whole ride.

I got one of the invitations. However, it wasn’t a link to the calendar itself, but an invitation to add it to my Google calendar. There is no way I want to do that, because it would add a bunch of events I don’t want to go to, and make me less likely to see the ones I do. Is there a way just to get to the calendar, rather than adding it to mine?

I asked the same question. Not possible, using Google Calendar. The best I could figure out was:
    – Accept the invitation to share the calendar
    – Look at the calendar, superimposed on/cluttering up your own calendar(s). Note any event that you really want to see on your calendar, and copy it to your calendar
    – Go to your calendar Settings and undisplay the Freezing Saddles calendar. You can always get back to calendar and temporarily display it, if you want to see if there are any new events that you’re interested in.
