There’s at least one fairly safe, easy way to get from Annandale over to the W&OD heading west if you’re interested. I use it as part of my commute. Starting at Hummer/Gallows:
I might try that – I think it avoids the part of Annandale Rd I dislike most. I will compare that to the route up by the hospital – which I’ve taken to Mosaic, but not all the way to the W&OD. But the 401/402 bus is the most frequent local bus around here, so the temptation will still be to take the bus and get more miles on the W&OD instead.

Were you heading north or south? If south, why not turn around at the LRT service road to Lafayette Village drive.? If north, go up a bit further to Marshall.
North from Championship. I’ve done Lafayette Drive too, this time I tried Hummer again. maybe Lafayette would be better for a “recovery” ride.

ParticipantI DID bike in Annandale – to the bus stop
I’ve biked to the library, the Safeway, and, in one misadventure, to Enterprise Rent-a-car. And once in a while I will ride to the Cross County and go either way on it. But for my weekend rides my preferences are either to get urban vibe, or to get miles, and neither is really that easy on the CCT. Also my wife likes to walk with me on the CCT (esp the part between LRT and and Pickett) so I’m kind of bored with that section of trail. I might one day try to ride the CCT down to Occuquan.
If the County ever gets around to striping some bike lanes east of the beltway, I would use them. And when I get better on hills, I will enjoy riding on Hummer, Americana, etc more.

Participantnote – if you are unwilling to walk your bike as directed on the mulch trails WHEN there are pedestrians around, as there often are on weekends (like today) there are alternative road routes around – ridgecrest and park terrace, I think. Someone rode past me (walking my bike) and an older pedestrian couple, and they were not impressed.

No bike trail on Beauregard, you have to ride on the street or the sidewalk (which is now legal in Alexandria
). Once on Walter Reed there is a bike lane on the north side and a pike path on the south side.
Going south on Walter Reed when you cross King is not much fun either.
Okay, back when I did it I was coming up from Hampton (a route from Park Center) and I probably took the sidewalk on King (there were few peds there then, and I didnt know about the City law on sidewalk cycling) up to the King and Walter Reed intersection, and dismounted for the crossing.

OK, new plan! How about from Mark Center to GUH?
Teh Googles says to ride up Beauregard to Walter Reed to get to 4MRT but that seems awfully trafficy.
Its been a long time since I biked in that area (an earlier foray into biking) but IIRC there’s a decent MUT type sidepath along Walter Reed from at least King (maybe from Seminary?) to the 4MRT. The area right around Beauregard and Seminary is probably the worst part.

I don’t know if I’d recommend riding through there.
I would not recommend it. DBB’s last photo shows the GOOD part of the desire path.

Totally saw the dude I call “Mr. Unhinged” riding on 395N this morning heading towards the Southeast Freeway. Not on the pedestrian section of the 14th Street Bridge, on the actual bridge in the breakdown lane.

Same guy, or is this becoming a more common occurrence?

ParticipantTo the woman in the SUV who did the wacky u turn on 18th street near Crystal Drive, next time you drive like that, you might want to do it in a car without political bumper stickers – it doesn’t reflect well on the folks you support. Not that I was going to vote for Cooch anyway.
To the elite dude who passed me just as I was passing a runner – it would be great if the MVT were wide enough for stuff like that, but it really isn’t, and you should be elite enough to do the relative velocities in your head and plan your passes, maybe?
To the rider who told me where the nearest froyo shop was (on Fern Street) – thanks.

You are a braver man than I am. Brave as in insane.

ParticipantI’ve decided I basically need to spend a couple of hours biking around the Pentagon lots and adjoining trails just to get this all down cold.
I’ve also guided some peds who were wandering around lost one time.

ParticipantGoals completed – ride to work on BTWD.
New goal – ride to work at least once every 2 weeks.
I have some goals in mind for length of ride, speed, ability on hills, but they are either ones I’m not sure how to quantify, or ones I don’t care to share

It sounds like these rich old bags are getting their way. Well that’s fine I guess. Leave them to their stupid limos. Put the bike share stations were people actually want them. I don’t think CaBi will be seen in Mclean or Potomac anytime soon either.Sometimes not everyone in an area agrees on bike share. I find this opposition to the current “holy hole in North Brooklyn” particularly heartening.

And for all that, the DC area probably has less dedicated bike/ped infrastructure. There are very few routes for long-distance bike commuters that aren’t also (fairly narrow) recreational jogging/walking trails, which is bound to lead to conflict.
on the most popular trails, you’ve got A. Walkers/joggers B. experienced commuters C. folks in training for racing D. slow, inexperienced riders
I’m usually amazed that people manage to get along as well as they do.
Key bridge is definitely a crowded place when Ive ridden on it (usually on nice weekend days) with lots of walkers and joggers, and cyclists of varying speeds and ability levels, in a fairly narrow piece of real estate.
