I bought a Showers Pass softshell at Performance Cycles in Bailey’s Crossroads. They had a decent selection IMO, much better than REI, at least. I bought this one: https://www.showerspass.com/products/skyline-softshell
It’s 180 bucks at Performance. Looks like it’s currently on sale if you buy direct from the web. It’s really thin, but I’ve been comfy with a long sleeve thermal and this jacket down to 17 degrees. It “breathes” pretty well to if the amount of moisture on my cell phone in the back pocket is any indication. It’s a racing cut, so I had to go up a size. Nice zipper side vents and a vent at the neck if you start sweating too much. I’ve worn it in the rain several times and it works great for keeping the rain out. I’ve got short arms for my height and the sleeves are slightly long. The only thing that I don’t like about it are that the back pockets are a little bit too high for me to comfortably dig into while I’m wearing it. This may be the short arm problem plus a lack of flexibility though.
Actually that was my issue with them as well, Large size jackets could fit my torso length, if a bit billowy, but the arms would be many many inches too long. The M size jacket torsos were too short, while the arms were just right.
Thanks for the recs so far, I’ll be checking all these places out this weekend probably.

I’m also tentatively planning on doing some laps on Saturday at 10 if anyone would like to join for some team riding.

Participant*sneaky secret team 13 only post* According to my test yesterday, it is indeed gate to gate, or within that segment. No need to go back up and around to the first gate on your last lap once you get to buckeye if you don’t wanna. Shhhhh don’t tell team 3. /*sneaky secret team 13 only post*

There are at least 8 different Strava segments on Hains Point. If you use the “Segment Explore” feature and zoom in, you can identify them.
One is the “gate to gate” segment, which is not a complete loop.
And if you have your own favorite way to measure, you can always create a new segment.I’m guessing the BAFS website counts the gate to gate segment as the lap then? That seems the most reasonable to me, since there are so many other options for start and end points.

Participantwhere is this thing tonight? if I can work it into my route home I’d stop by and grab something strong (beer not glutes)
edit: also wanted to ask this other question: where does a Haines Point lap start and end? Does it start at the northern stop/right turn from buckeye onto ohio? If it does, does that mean you have to go up buckeye a second time to complete the lap, or can you just head straight out? Or does it start where the divided ohio dr merges with itself and go all the way around? Does it start and end at the stops and ignore buckeye drive altogether, not completing the loop? I just don’t want to be going up there and doing like 90% of a lap and not complete a loop that counts, because I decide to turn left instead of right at the end, if you know what I mean.

Participant2 this past week or so, and 1 close call. I plan to lose this prize, however.

Participantpentagon to memorial still has problems, after 3 years, I might give up on it and permanently switch to the long bridge route and walk through the park if necessary no matter what
dirt piles on the overpasses, some have to be climbed over because of the dangerous low walls:
The S-curve trail to the foot of the bridge is still an ice sheet for the most part
memorial bridge’s new semi permanent (from experience) sidewalk blocker:

This morning, other side of overpass as last pic, so from other direction:

4 joggers crossed paths with me this morning as we picked our way every 20 feet over the 2-3 foot walls of ice boulders completely blocking the path on the bridge. There’s an empty median in the middle of the road. Completely ridiculous bad snow removal practice.

ParticipantFor people heading between DC and Alexandria:
Getting from the pentagon area to memorial bridge is all portage. I don’t understand why it’s nobody’s responsibility to clear the sidewalks on the bridges and overpasses in that area. Memorial has a bit of a sketchily rideable path through the snow from foot traffic but obviously nobody went over it with a snowblower. For those of you who were around DC for 9/11, can you imagine what it would be like if an emergency required a lot of foot traffic out of DC and these few connections are all practically untraversable?
The connection between the end of commonwealth avenue and 4 mile run/mvt can’t really be ridden yet.
The newer trail along mainline blvd / potomac yard was plowed but is an ice rink, it seemed safer to stay on the street even with people driving dangerously around you as seems to be everybody’s habit on this particular road.

Actually, I think it would be best to go ahead and borrow all of Powerful Pete’s bikes–just to try them out. Give yourself a week or two to see which ones feel good. No big hurry to return them; he’s happy taking the Metro into work.
LOL. Thanks though everybody. I don’t think anybody expected it to take so long. Brian from Papillon called me up yesterday and said he put a new wheel on that I could ride around on until the delayed hub parts get in. The place I actually bought the bike from would have never even bothered.
Looking at the BAFS charts you guys (we?) are the fastest team so far. Pretty cool.

ParticipantI used strava to track my run across the bay bridge during the 10k race this year, maybe a few others did that but forgot to switch it to run mode?
