My middle name is Mark. I grew up on quiet Webster Avenue in Brooklyn. In the 1970s some of our evenings at home were dominated by Masterpiece Theater series on PBS about Tudor England (The Six Wives of Henry the VIIIth, Elizabeth R) in which every other characters was Earl of This, Lord of That. Also about this time I was reading the Lord of the Rings for the first time, and telling my parents all about it. My father, who was funny and quirky, decided to give me an aristocratic title/nickname – I am not sure which of us came up with Lord of the Mark of Webster.
I used Lord of the Mark as a handle on a gaming forum, where it perhaps was a little less eye catching than on a biking forum.
And here I thought it was because you had some connection to stage acting.

I’m hesitant to take part if there are going to be crazy guys like this in the group.

ParticipantThis is where my bike ended up after this evening’s commute. In the detached garage, being wiped down and lubed, to the accompaniment of WETA-FM on the radio, being warmed by two kerosene heaters, with the mechanic being warmed by Bourbon. I expect the next two evenings to end in the same manner.

missed this one, too – was hoping to get back from this morning’s ride in time, but we decided to do an extra 30 minute loop. Sounds like it was pretty fun – how was the food?
The DC Slices pizza was pretty good. We had the buffalo chicken plus a side of Old Bay tator tots. The beer, of course, was excellent. For the freebie first draft we chose the Maniacal IPA. Went on to a 6oz Long Black Veil black IPA and for me a 6oz pale ale with the pizza. I took home a growler of Colossal Two smoked porter.
But wait, it wasn’t all about the beer & food. The folks from the Pro Shop lead a nice ride. Everyone was watched over and accommodated. The route has been improved, as there is now no crossing of Seminary Road, which was a big pain in the a**. The only casualty was my son, who dumped it on the transition from the street to the Port City driveway on the last two feet of the ride. Pride was the only damage.
It was great to spend some time with Mr. L.O. Themark. He convinced me I need to stop by Best Buns next Wednesday morning for coffee.
And this is what kind of ride this was…

ParticipantIt was a little lonely out on the MVT this evening. Where was everyone? It was a glorious, post-rain, misty, low cloud cover ride home.

Yes feel free to join us along the route!
If the weather is looking real miserable we will call it Friday night. In that case you can still bring your sweaters to the brewery for a pint when we open at noon!
Knowing this crowd, if the weather is so bad the ride gets cancelled, we’ll all ride to the brewery for the Noon opening.

ParticipantI saw Santa on the MVT this morning. I hope that white beard is helping to keep Fast Friendly Guy warm.

I haven’t tried that, but literally as you were posting this I was in the basement trying to get my drop bar Moose Mitts to fit on the fixed gear, and I think they’ll be okay. I would bet the flat bar version would be just fine on CaBi.
If not, as i mentioned in another thread, I just bought a sewing machine and homemade Moose Mitts are on my list. If the real version doesn’t fit on CaBi, mine might.
Flat bars, drop bars – bah! I need to find Moose Mitts that fit mustache bars.

Ditto. Although oddly the temperature seemed to plummet just north of OT on the MVT, which made no sense given it seemed a good 5-10 degrees cooler there than at my house which sits atop a big hill. It felt like high 50s at my house and yet high 40s right at beginning of Daingerfeld Island there.
Much like Olympia beer, “It’s the water.” I too noticed some spectacular temperature variations on the MVT tonight.

ParticipantOne of my fears is the Washington Post and the New York Times will merge, leaving only one truly good daily newspaper in the U.S. They are already using the same delivery person in my area. Your title and link have me concerned.

ParticipantIan – Did you pass me on the MVT just south of Gravelly Point this evening? Me: Purple Bridgestone XO-1 with moustache bars and two panniers. You: Celeste Bianchi with backpack. I figure anyone who announces their pass so politely with a thank you for my acknowledgement and running steady lights must be a forum member.

You don’t need no steenkin’ shower. Well, perhaps that’s not the best adjective to use. Seriously, why shower after only 9 miles?
