ParticipantSo “Custis” is the answer, not “Pie”?

As you can see, my avatar above is riding straight and steady on an ice patch–no hands, even!–and is not falling over. So it can be done.
Sure, in Frazz’s cartoon world.

ParticipantThis is the Custis sidewalk next to the Marriott about 2:00pm today. Arlco was trying, but I don’t think they are going to be able to keep up.

ParticipantRode my rain bike with skinny tires on the MVT between Key Bridge and 4MRT this evening. There were about 3 places that looked like this. The rider in the background had just fallen at this location. I walked it.
I’m thinking tomorrow morning should be a fine commute for the snow bike. There may be 1-2 inches of fresh snow on the MVT with no trampling and freezing. Tomorrow evening may be a different situation.

ParticipantI took on the MVT and won tonight. No dabbing, no walking. Rode the whole way from Key Bridge to 4MRT. Take THAT GW Parkway management! (Made possible by contributions from Nokian and a few curses)

KWL, if Ben doesn’t buy your rollers I will take ’em! What do you mean the resistance unit is worthless — does it not work to add resistance?
I just meant I never saw the need for resistance on rollers, but I’ve never used them for intervals so I never hooked it up. Sounds like Ben wants them. I’ll let you know if the sale falls through.

I’m interested in picking up a decent set of rollers so that I can ride indoors – is anyone thinking about upgrading or sell a set?
Thanks!
I’ve still got these: http://bikearlingtonforum.com/showthread.php?8103-Tacx-Rollers-for-Sale-Alexandria though they now have a new drive belt. Same price.

Maybe this will help: My commute in today (Eads to Longbridge/Pentagon/LBJ) only took about 10 minutes longer than my normal 4MR – MVT – 14 St. Bridge route. I was so happy to see my speedo break past the (recently elusive) 20mph barrier even with 42mm Conti Winter Contacts aired down to 35 psi. Wheeeee! I think the 32mm slicks are going back on the commuter this weekend… totally could’ve ridden in today on slicks.
I chose wisely. This is much nicer than the Longbridge – Pentagon – Memorial Bridge – 23rd Street (nasty hill) with traffic – P Street – R Street that used to be my snow route. Back to my rain bike next week. I’m going to be so happy riding on rubber instead of tungsten carbide.

ParticipantTried out the MVT from 4MR to Key Bridge this morning. Much is down to pavement. The National Airport overpasses are solid lumpy ice. There is a good bit of packed ice singletrack between Gravelly Point and Memorial Bridge. I was so happy to see the west end of the TRI parking lot. Thank you Arlington County.
The Nokian W240 studded tires made it possible to ride it all, though I did chicken out and walk a couple of times. I just need to be more confident in the capabilities of the tires, stay loose and don’t stare at the nasty looking ice 3 feet in front of the bike.
Now I need to decide if I take the same route home or go 110 – Pentagon – Longbridge, buzzing all the way.

You might find that you have less to walk if you do Crystal City to Long Bridge to Boundary Channel to Washington Blvd bike path to Memorial Bridge (south side). The only problematic area is the Washington Blvd glorified sidewalk from Boundary Channel to wherever the NPS stops clearing the south sidewalk of Memorial Bridge.
A number of years ago I occasionally took the lane on Washington Blvd. to avoid the uncleared overpass sidewalk and the equally uncleared trail to Memorial Bridge. The folly of youth (shaking head). One year, not only was the overpass sideway not cleared, snow plowed from Washington Blvd. was dumped on it.

ParticipantTo the person riding across the upriver side of Key Bridge at 6:20 this morning – :thumbsup. From my heated car seat I saw the temperature was 7°F.

Is cross-country skiing really their claimed rationale?
Yes. Years ago I received a response to my request to consider clearing the MVT that stated it is a multi-use trail and one of those uses is skiing so they weren’t going to clear the trail.

ParticipantNice tailwind today…until the hard right turn at Gravelly Point where it suddenly became a nasty headwind. It was nice the Weather Liars were wrong once again, with no rain or snow as the front came through.

Press Release: C&O Canal NHP Revises Fee Proposal
HAGERSTOWN, Md. – Chesapeake & Ohio Canal National Historical Park (C&O Canal) is revising its proposal to increase and expand entrance and other fees park-wide. Last month the park proposed expanding fee collection to include charging a park-wide recreation fee. At this point, we’re midway through robust public meetings. Having heard concerns over the proposal for new fees, the park has decided to rescind its proposal to expand fee collection.
The park is still proposing to moderately increase existing entrance, campground and pavilion rental fees only at park locations where fees are currently collected.
“We have seen the great passion we all share for this park displayed over the course of three public meetings and have three more scheduled. At this point we’re modifying our proposal and will continue public dialog,” Superintendent Kevin Brandt said.
After this revision, the proposed entrance fees that would become effective no sooner than May 1, 2015 are as follows:
