I felt okay.
Sorry to hear that this happened to you, and I hope you’re still feeling all right. The day after can sometimes be more painful.
I hope you and your bike are back in tip-top shape soon.

Hmmm. It seems I own a cross bike that doubles as a gravel bike…and a bike rack. I wonder how well they fit on one of my friend’s cars?
Hmmm. It seems I have a car with a 3-bike rack … and sadly, another bike-related commitment that Sunday afternoon. I wonder how well my friends would look sitting behind the steering wheel of my car?

ParticipantI’m planning to be there, and will probably bring a friend.

It’s at a lockhouse. You don’t need no steekin’ camping gear.
I was surprised at how well equipped the lockhouse was. You don’t need to bring any utensils or plates. I’d say a sleeping bag and food is all you need. I believe Komorebi always provides beer.
Actually, you don’t even need to bring food if you don’t want to. Poolesville is about 5 miles away and has an assortment of dining and retail options. Also a beer store. Not that I would know anything about that, considering that alcohol isn’t allowed on NPS property.

I also liked the stop at the Combined Sewer Overflow 3 and 4 since I’ve ridden past it so many times without popping down that sidewalk. I didn’t realize I was even crossing a bridge and had no idea Hoofs Run was down there.
I’ve ridden over that bridge literally hundreds of times, and I never gave it a second thought until I was putting this ride together. That’s one of the best parts of doing these rides. I get to learn about things in my own backyard that I never paid attention to before.
Lots more information about the bridge’s history and architecture is available in the National Register of Historic Places registration form, available here.

ParticipantIt was great to see so many forum friends at the bike rodeo and Earth Day bike rides — including ChristoB50, Judd, KWL, lordofthemark, and wheels&wings. Special thanks to LeprosyStudyGroup, reji, and Steve O for marshaling. All photos below were taken by LSG:

ParticipantHappy Earth Day! Don’t forget, the Alexandria Earth Day rides are coming up this Saturday, April 27 at 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Which infrastructure project will remove an estimated 5000 vehicles from the roads every day? What major issue with Alexandria’s waterways needs to be remediated by 2025? Why is there a trail to nowhere at the southern end of S. Payne St.? Come find out on Saturday.

ParticipantI never met Dave, but rootchopper’s [URL=”http://https://rootchopper.com/2019/04/19/sad-beyond-belief/”%5Daccount%5B/URL%5D of how Dave fought for U-turn barriers on Pennsylvania Avenue moved me to tears. I bike on the Pennsylvania Avenue cycletrack regularly, and I will always be grateful to Dave and the others who worked to make that street safer.
On the way back from the ghost bike installation today, I witnessed the following scene, which seemed like a fitting tribute to Dave:
Scene: a family walking across Pennsylvania Avenue at 13th Street, clearly visiting from out of town. Man, gesturing: “That’s nice. Bike lanes. I like that.”
Roll in peace, Dave.

ParticipantI was also caught unexpectedly in the rain this morning. So was another colleague who commutes in from Maryland, so it wasn’t just a Virginia problem.
I was at Commonwealth and Monroe when the rain started pitter-pattering, so I took shelter under Live Oak’s covered patio to make sure my Ortlieb was rolled tightly and to get out the helmet cover I keep in my saddlebag for events like this. I would have taken shelter longer if I’d known how heavy the rain was about to get. By the time I passed the other bikers hiding out under the 4MR underpasses, I was already soaked, so I just kept going.
The rain had mostly stopped by the time I got to the 14th Street Bridge, but at that point the wind picked up so much that it actually blew my helmet cover off. Thankfully, the wind blew the helmet cover against the railing and kept it plastered there long enough for me to wait for another biker to go by, pull a u-turn, and retrieve it.

Komorebi what date is this screening? I’m out the week of the 15th for the Ballston one!
The D.C. screening would have been at the same date and time as the Ballston one, but it got canceled because they didn’t sell enough tickets.

ParticipantI’m planning to go to the DC screening at Regal Gallery Place Stadium 14, if enough tickets get sold. https://tickets.demand.film/event/7400. If you’d like to meet up for that screening, let me know.
