You guys convinced me, I’m riding for Washington Area All-stars now! (Much love for Women and Bicycles and all, but this inter-state competition is one of my favorite parts.) What I don’t know is whether all of my points/miles etc. will transfer over, or just what I’ve put in since I switched.

In any case my 50-miler yesterday both bumped me up to Platinum for points and broke 1,000 miles for the period. I’m on track to beat my PR from last challenge and its not even half-way through! :D

Thank you everyone for a fun meet up! I know I haven’t been on the forums long, but I already feel so welcome! It really was great to see people behind the usernames.

And oh man, GovernorSilver, I hear ya. I did the Gunson-Valley route to get to Braddock because the Google recommended it. It got points for being a direct route, but those hills were not a trifle with a full belly!

I’d really like to attend! How late do folks stick around for? I may not be able to get there until after 6pm…

Surprisingly no one has mentioned all the awesome breweries along the W&OD as convenience stops. There are plenty, starting with Capital City Brewing in Shirlington (at Mile 0) and ending with Adroit Theory and Corcoran in Purcellville at the end of the trail (Mile 44?).

I highly recommend that you stop in and have a tasting or two while you are out there. 😎

Ha! I’ll have to be careful not to have too many our I’ll never make it back!

How fun! Let’s see, for an uplifting one how about:

    We share the same road
    Mile upon mile
    Let’s lighten the load
    With a wave and a :)!

    Annnnd for the daily gripe:

    The bollards are here
To keep you off my back
    So please keep your rear
    Outta our cycle track!

I’m glad to hear that at very least it looks like they’ll be doing the La Course women’s race again this year. Has anyone hear of any watch parties for that (or the end of the Men for that matter) on the 26th?

It occurs to me I’ll be participating in a metric century that day, and closing that out with drinks and viewing while I’ve got bikes on the brain already might be a lark.

Ooo these are some great suggestions! Thank you so much!

Its nice to know where I can make pit stops on something like the WO&D (especially with all of the sun meaning a need to plenty of water).

And the ones starting from Phoenix Bikes are great because its a 6-8 mile ride for me to get down there, which only serves to pad the mileage for the ride! ;)

Wow! You guys sure know now to make a gal feel welcome! I’m “spoked” to finally join the community. (Sorry guys, I love punny word-play…)
I haven’t been a regular forum denizen in years, but I’m really excited to get into this one. Finally I can try to figure out who these other folks on the Bike Challenge are!

Thank you all so much. Though I really must reply to a few of these specifically…

You seem like a prime candidate for Freezing Saddles, Kitty. You can be on my team. Everyone wants to be on my team.

This past winter I started seeing this “Freezing Saddles” on Twitter. Pick me for your team Steve, and I’m in!

While I spent more time taking the Metro than I care to admit this past winter, if the NBC can get me to ride in 100 heat and thunderstorms, a challenge or team effort would get me out there in the snow.

    Welcome Kitty!

You sound like a great addition to our little biking cult. Be sure to check out the trail network in Maryland; it’s great! You can bike there or take metro.

You may wish to try riding to Purcellville and back via the W&OD for century training. You can’t get lost, there are plenty of places to stop for refreshments, and lots of cyclists to wave to and meet. Just be sure to check the weather forecasts carefully for thunderstorms (which we seem to be plagued with this year – sigh).

Be sure to join us for our next happy hour (usually the third Thursday of the month at Capitol Brewery in Shirlington – watch for the forum posting) or at any of the breakfast meetups in the area.

    Welcome!

Late last season I made it out to Rockville for the first time and was blown away by the northern part of the Rockcreek park trails and the Bethesda trolly trail! (Last summer was also a first for Sligo and MacArthur to Potomac, MD). I’m definitely interested in recommendations!

As for Purcellville, I was thinking about doing that for my last big ride before the century! The furthest I’ve gone on W&O was Gallows Rd… I need to find a good restroom option

    Um, are we twins?

I also came from MI for grad school at GWU, although 7 years ago (wow I’m getting old). I’m also trying for my first century this year, although I think we’re looking at the Seagull Century since I wanted to avoid biking on 110 degree days.

Awesome Emm! I was about to discount the twins thing until I did the math and realize I came out here in 2009 (Wow. Where did the years go?) Where are you from in the ol’ Mitten? I hail from Port Huron and went to MSU.

    Welcome, Kitty.

FYI, you are the third trail kitty documented on this forum. The others are both orange tabbies – “Hobo” hangs out on the W&OD east of Rt. 50, and “Blue” is seen on the Bluemont Junction near the intersection with the W&OD. I don’t know if you are an orange tabby too, but that would be a cool coincidence.

That’s delightful! 😮 Alas I lack the stripes, but there are some photos out there with me in black cat ears…
