Arlington, VAThis little free was actually fairly well stocked, and very organized too! I didn’t really need anything.

Where’s the snow?

You might try replying to his latest Strava activity. Or e-mailing him from a Yahoo address, since that’s least likely to be flagged as spam by Yahoo. Or try Facebook; there is a Jim Cooley who lives in Vienna who may well be him. Or he’s on Flickr as metura4 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/7839090@N02/with/461904561/); you could send him a message there.
Asking for a substitute is a last resort, since we wouldn’t have enough of those to go around if we don’t find some of the “missing” ones.
I’ve done most of that – and every other suggestion people have offered. Looks like his most recent Flickr post is 2007.
I posted here in case he had registered with a biking friend who doesn’t know that he hasn’t signed in.

I’m moving on to the PHX area on Tuesday. Just one more day here. I’m going to try my Organ Mt. ride again tomorrow (and pick up some more tubes on the way out at a bike shop). And yes, I have had a few flats on just riding on roads in the past. But nothing like I had today. I checked when I got back to my hotel, and I had nothing. This was strictly offroad.
I will remember to check my tires a bit more often on rides. I sort of forgot about that problem.
Maybe I’ll catch you on the way back (if I come back this way). I never really know where I’m going on these trips. I wing it a lot.Alan, if you do, let me know. You can get me at westenhoff at gmail dot com or text me 571 215 5353. Have a safe trip!

FYI. These flats were in Las Cruces, NM. I made the mistake of riding the bike offroad for a photo op. So many thorns in both tires. Both went flat within two miles of that photo. It took forever to get all the thorns out. You have to stick to the main roads out here.
Ah — since you’re in LC, just down the road from me, I very highly recommend the slime tubes. Even on road, if the wind blows, the goat heads return. How long are you down here? I *might* be able to meet you!

1/16/2022 Beer
I had planned on a picture of a brewery. But….after getting two flats on my ride today, I rode back down to that brewery for a much needed beer.

I hate flats. I hadn’t had any for a couple of years and then when I was here in El Paso in September I had 11 flats in 3 weeks and that was with tire liners and brand new gatorskins. I converted to slime tubes and so far, so good. But you definitely earned that cerveza!

ParticipantThis is such a joyful piece. It’s on a high point in the center of the park, and you have to walk across the ‘grass’ to see it up close. When you get there, if you’re like me, you laugh out loud.

Installed in 2017 — Wagon Sprouts is artist Christopher Fennell’s interpretation of Jack and the Beanstalk. The 24’ tall bean sprouts are constructed out of steel pipe and repurposed little red wagons.
The three sprouting beans create a gathering point where viewers can look up at the sprout leaves.
The art piece was created using funding from the City of El Paso’s Public Art Program. For ten years, the city has dedicated two percent of every capital project to site-specific public art. More than 50 public art projects have been completed since the program was started.

Mural on the side of the El Paso Draft House. I don’t know if they’re just closed on Sunday or closed. Their google entry says “Temporarily Closed” and no hours listed.

ParticipantI was on my way to get a photo of a piece I know already and cutting through a neighborhood, saw these beauties. The more I look at them, the more I see!

Participant1/15/22 Donut
Eschewing the chain donut stores, I rode to a little hold in the wall place (appropriately enough for a hole in the pastry kind of food, right?). The donuts were SO delicious! And the chorizo in a blanket I picked up to eat later for lunch was amazing too. I might regret finding this place!

ParticipantHey Team For Your Ice Only – even with two members of our team not showing up on Strava or in the FS game stats, we’re still #7 at this point. Not too shabby!
Keep it up – ride every day that you feel safe to do so.
Now to go find a photo of a donut for #scavhunt. Consumption of same is optional…

Maybe we should organize a group ride to replenish this sad little LFL?
What a great idea. And if you do it, those who participate in the ride and donate (a) book(s) will get extra points. Just post a photo so I know to give extra points!

Lat: 39.01679
Long: -77.13847This one was quite ornate: A main part with two stories (the upper one being where that round porthole is) with adult books, and an annex on the left side with kids’ books (and a chimney on top). It could use more kids’ books, though–that section was considerably less full than the adult section.
That looks like a true labor of love! Nice find!

ParticipantAs part of the new Cielo Vista Branch Library, artist Patricia “Sabina” Muñoz was commissioned to help integrate public art elements into the project. Continuum is a 10 foot tall free-standing sculpture finished in warm colored Venetian glass tile. The pattern of the glass layout creates both texture and activity.
The Branch of the library is named for Jose Cisneros, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jos%C3%A9_Cisneros_(artist)

Participant1/14/22 Squirrel
I despaired of finding a squirrel in the desert. I contemplated riding to the bookstore and finding a Brian Jacques book. But as I was cruising along in a neighborhood, right as my phone rang, I saw some squirrel figures in a yard. I answered my son’s call with, “Hey! I found some squirrels!”
If you’re interested in white squirrels, visit the Sully Historic Site out near Dulles Airport (across 28 from Air & Space Annex)…there’s a story there.
