11104 Stillwater Avenue, Kensington, MD 20895. The proprietor says, “I hope this brings with it the joy of reading to young and old alike.” However, the only book for the young was a children’s dictionary. It could use more children’s books.

I’m sensing a theme with all these LFL’s that NEED children’s books. Perhaps time to send out an “ask” for outgrown children’s books to be left on people’s curbs for you to redistribute?

Beacon Field is now the home of Beacon Center along Route 1 in Fairfax County.
I’m glad they did something positive with that property. When I was in high school at Fort Hunt (many moons ago), that hill was the destination ride and involved crossing Rt. 1 – which even then, was terribly dangerous. So of course, being 15, my friend and I thrilled to do twice each trip.

Participant1/22/2022 Airport
This is the El Paso International Airport. The whole time I was over there, only 2 planes were airborne, and that occurred while I was riding, not while I was stopped to take photos.
I let my mom choose the photo to submit, and she liked this one best. Note the flag — yes, I had to ride home in that headwind! Fortunately, the airport isn’t far away from the house.

ParticipantOfficially entitled, “The Equestrian” this massive statue at the El Paso International Airport greets all visitors. The worst shot, of course, is the one with my bike in it. The others are so you can see the detail of the casting.
It is supposedly Don Juan de OƱate. It is not without controversy and was vandalized after George Floyd’s murder. That stirred up even more controversy.

Extra points for getting a kid out to ride in this kind of cold AND then she found a great book that feeds her passion. LOVE kid cyclists!

A brand new LFL on Farm House Lane in Fairfax. It didn’t have any books when Red found it earlier in the week so he deposited some books in it on his last visit. I brought 5 books today. I had asked my husband for some books and did not pay any attention to the titles when I put it in my backpack, so I chuckled when I took one of the books out of the bag. Check out the title of the book I’m holding, “The Frozen Hours” by Jeff Schaara. It is a book about the Korean War, but the title was very appropriate for today (temp of 17 but feels like 5). The only thing my father would ever say about the Korean War was that it was bitterly cold.

Yay for you and for Red and for Ed! Extra points all around (although Ed’s are ethereal). My dad wasn’t in the Korean War, but stationed there afterwards and said the same thing. Once when he was visiting he went to see the Korean War memorial and it was a foggy morning. He said it was eerie, seeing those weary soldiers coming back through the fog, just like he remembered.
Thank you for being such a great player!

The nicest, cleanest and orderly LFL with the cutest door knobs. Adult theme books with subjects on cooking, the mind, the brain and mindfulness. I grabbed the book on Mastering Mindfulness by Kim Davies and donated “Passenger on The Pearl” by Winifred Conkling. LFL is located at 1524 Oklahoma Ave NE. #FSBOOKS

Okay, this may not even count, because Tapatalk has been misbehaving and not letting me post since just before midnight when I started trying. Plus, there is no way to get my bike into the photo. Let me know, and I’ll untag the ride.
The problem is, the library is described as being at the entrance to the Pence Law Library at American University. But it is not at the entrance to the building; it is at the entrance from the building into the library. (Doesn’t it violate the spirit of the thing to have a Little Free Library where the public can’t access it?) So all I could do is take a picture of it through a window, and there was no way to get my bike into that shot.
The proprietor indicates that they want light fiction, for law students tired of reading nothing but case law. So if you can actually get in, that’s what you should donate.

Several of the LFL’s here are behind locked doors or fences. I agree, it completely violates the spirit of the L FREE L. But, there it is.
Of course it counts. You do good work.

So pleased they’re releasing mom earlier from hospital than they had expected. But it definitely cut into biking time – no complaints – but not many miles either!

ParticipantI didn’t do the snowstorm challenge because a) I forgot and b) there was no bad weather where I am so it seemed a little unfair.
But today I had an excellent day. They called to say they’d be releasing mom from the hospital today. They had been saying Sunday … so this was awesome, but I was thinking it would mean no bike ride. Of course, I forgot that getting out of there takes even MORE time than getting in there . . . so I had plenty of time to ride down to the local watering hole (ha ha). It’s a shopping/restaurant area that was converted from a huge factory that was there for years. (Ever heard of Farah pants?). The property is called “The Fountains” and those are my public art for today.

1/20/2022 – Mead
There’s a lovely gentleman on N. Ivy Street in Arlington that has a daily whisky tasting for anybody who wants to stop by and imbibe a free sample. He also has other inebriants besides whisky, including mead!

Wow! I saw Chaucer’s Mead in the store along with some Irish bottles labeled “meade” … but the “Made in Texas” mead won out. It turns out to be way too sweet for my taste but I’m glad I tried it.

ParticipantWhere was this guy when I was changing my tube this morning?
Actually, this looks like I posed my bike perfectly. I’m not that good — I didn’t notice the dovetail between mural and bike until I looked at the photo at home!
This mural wraps around the building of The Great American Cattle Company Steakhouse. They used to make the most delicious steak sandwiches. Now … well, I like the mural.

I found a bottle! I bought the bottle! Then I remembered I was on my bike with only a small string bag backpack. But I schlepped the bottle home and will try it this evening with pizza. While my mom’s in the hospital I’m having all the things she can’t have due to sodium restrictions. Tomorrow night is Chinese!

So cool. I had to look up this use of the word “vernacular”. It says: concerned with domestic and functional rather than public or monumental buildings. In other words, they used a .25c word to describe an ordinary house that was worth preserving as long as they gussied it up to make it sound important. I guess in the NoVa area, with so many notable VA historical places, you do what you have to in order to stand out!
Well done!
